Discourse states: The so-called acute hernia (Zu Han) refers to a condition where individuals with weak Kidney Qi, having exposed their bodies to cold and consumed cold drinks or food, suddenly contract pathogenic factors that transmit into the meridians. Since the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian are exteriorly-interiorly related, sudden contraction of cold and heat pathogens fighting each other causes the sinews and vessels to lose free flow. The Qi mechanism becomes knotted and obstructed, leading to distension and fullness. The pain attacks and circles the umbilicus and abdomen, radiating to the Yin organs, erupting suddenly with severe pain. One may sweat profusely (cold sweat), feel suffocated and faint, losing consciousness, making the suffering unbearable; hence it is called acute hernia.
To treat acute hernia with heart pain like stabbing, complete pain around the umbilicus and abdomen, profuse cold sweat, and Qi nearly exhausted, use Shujiao San Formula:
Shu Jiao (Sichuan Pepper Fruit, remove eyes and closed-mouth ones, stir-fry until oil appears) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed with fresh Ginger Juice, dried, half tael) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, one piece, processed, peel skin and navel removed) Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger, processed until cracked) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted and chopped) Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove coarse bark, half tael each).
The above six herbs are crushed like hemp seeds. Each dose is three qian bi (approx. 3-5g), boiled in one sheng (approx. 200ml) of water with one large date-sized piece of fresh ginger (cut roughly) and two dates (split). Decoct until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm at any time.
To treat acute hernia attacking the umbilicus and abdomen with pain, sweating, and suffocation/fainting, use Zhuyu Tang Formula:
Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, washed with hot water, baked dry, stir-fried, half tael) Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, remove seedlings and leaves) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed until cracked, peel skin and navel removed) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, remove black skin).
*Note: The original text lists "above eight flavors" but only lists five ingredients here; following the source text structure.*
The above herbs are crushed like hemp seeds. Each dose is three qian bi, boiled in one sheng of water with one large date-sized piece of fresh ginger (cut roughly) and two dates (split). Decoct until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm at any time.
To treat acute hernia abdominal pain with internal urgency, use Siwei Danggui Tang Formula:
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, baked) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, two liang each) Yang Rou (Mutton, cut removing fat membrane, half jin).
The above four items: finely chop the first three. First, boil mutton in five sheng of water until tender and cooked, remove the meat. Use the mutton broth to decoct the herbs. When ready, strain and clarify. Take one zhan (approx. 100-200ml) warm at any time.
To treat acute hernia with sudden violent pain circling the umbilicus and abdomen, use Ganjiang Tang Formula:
Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger, processed until cracked) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, remove black skin) Jiao (Sichuan Pepper Fruit, remove eyes and closed-mouth ones, stir-fry until oil appears) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed until cracked, peel skin and navel removed) Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove coarse bark...).
*Note: Original text cuts off ingredient list but states "above eight flavors".*
Crush like hemp seeds. Each dose is two qian bi, boiled in one sheng of water until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm at any time.
To treat acute hernia attacking the lower abdomen with pain, use Huixiang Zhusan Formula:
Xiang Zi (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) Chen Qu (Fermented Wheat Mass) Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, remove coarse bark, process with Ginger Juice and chop) Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, remove pith, stir-fried with bran) Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove coarse bark...).
*Note: Original text cuts off but states "above thirteen flavors".*
Pound and sieve into fine powder. Each dose is three qian bi, boiled in one sheng of water with two cun (approx. 6cm) of scallion white and a little salt. Decoct until reduced to 70% and take hot.
To treat acute hernia with unbearable abdominal pain, use Muxiang Wan Formula:
Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove coarse bark) Bing Lang (Arecae Semen, chopped) Xiang Zi (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried) Peng E Zhu (Curcumae Phaeocaulis Rhizoma, baked and chopped) Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, remove skin and tips, double kernels ground into paste, one liang each).
The above nine items: pound the first eight into powder, mix evenly with Tao Ren paste. Use wine-boiled wheat paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Each dose is twenty pills. Take with warm wine on an empty stomach before meals.
To treat acute hernia with lower abdomen and Yin organ traction pain, unbearable, use Jiangshu Wan Formula:
Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice wash water, sliced, stir-fried) Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger, processed until cracked) Ma Lin Hua (Iridis Tectorii Flos) Yuan Hua (Genkwa Flos, stir-fried with vinegar until charred) Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faex, remove soil) Wu Tou (Aconiti Radix, processed...).
*Note: Original text cuts off but states "above six flavors".*
Pound and sieve into powder. Use vinegar-boiled wheat paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Each dose is ten pills. Take before meals with warm wine or salt water.
