治元脏虚冷上攻口疮，巴戟散方

上三味，捣为细散，用猪腰子二只，去筋膜，每一只，入药散一钱匕，用湿纸裹煨熟
，乘热去纸，以口吸热气，有涎即吐，候冷细嚼服之。
治口疮，杏仁丸方

[Commentary] The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian (Foot-Taiyin Splein Channel) has its qi connecting to the mouth. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian (Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel) and the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian (Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Channel), their vessels run alongside the mouth. Therefore, if wind, cold, dampness, or heat pathogens invade the zang-fu organs and manifest in the meridians, diseases of the lips and mouth will occur there. Teeth are the end of bones, nourished by marrow. Additionally, treating dental diseases via acupoints of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, if treated within five days of onset, the teeth will become firm and dense. Such treatments are simple, effective, and should not be neglected.
[Commentary] Mouth ulcers (Oral Ulcers) are caused by heat in the Heart and Spleen, with qi rushing to the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), steaming and scorching the tongue and mouth, thus forming sores. Furthermore, there are cases where weak Stomach qi and insufficient grain qi cause deficient Yang to float upward, resulting in mouth ulcers. One cannot treat them uniformly; one must seek the root cause.
Treatment for heat-toxin activation causing mouth ulcers with restlessness: Xuan Shen Decoction. Ingredients include: Fresh Scrophulariae Radix Juice (Scrophularia Root Juice), Fresh Puerariae Radix Juice (Kudzu Root Juice) (each 3 Sheng), Silver Leaf (10 Liang), Halloysitum (Ground), Gypsum Fibrosum (Ground), Talcum (Ground), Magnetitum (Quenched in vinegar seven times, ground, each 1 Jin), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Antilopis Cornu (Antelope Horn, shaved), Rhinocerotis Cornu (Horn of Rhinoceros, shaved), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice Root, cut, each 2 Liang), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 1 Jin), Bovis Calculus (Niuhuang, finely ground, 2 Liang). Of the thirteen ingredients, except for Silver Leaf, Scrophulariae Radix Juice, Puerariae Radix Juice, Natrii Sulfas, and Bovis Calculus, all are coarsely crushed and sifted. Boil Silver Leaf, Halloysitum, Gypsum Fibrosum, Talcum, and Magnetitum in three Dou of water, obtain two Dou of juice, and filter out the dregs. Separately, boil Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Antilopis Cornu, Rhinocerotis Cornu, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma in five Zhan of water until two Zhan remain, filter out the dregs, and mix with Scrophulariae Radix Juice and Puerariae Radix Juice. Re-boil until it resembles thin syrup. Then add Natrii Sulfas, stir evenly, pour into a porcelain container, add Bovis Calculus powder, stir again until uniform, yielding a yellow-black liquid. Take two large spoons, mix with one He of honey, divide into four doses, take with hot water, at any time.
Treatment for mouth ulcers: Huai Zhi Decoction. Ingredients include: Sophorae Tonkinensis Ramulus (Huai Zhi, collected in Feb-Mar, cut), Mori Ramulus (Mulberry Twig, cut), Salix Matudae Ramulus (Willow Twig, cut, each 1 Dou). Soak these three in five Dou of water overnight, boil next day on gentle then strong fire until one Dou remains, filter, return filtrate to copper pot, boil to five Sheng, then add subsequent herbs. Coccidae (Huai Zhu Chong, 1 Liang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, remove leaves, half Liang), Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma (Gao Ben, remove soil)... [Text incomplete]. Ten ingredients total. Crush and sieve the latter seven into powder, add to previous decoction, boil to syrup consistency. Rinse mouth thoroughly before bed, apply half spoon of medicine to painful area, spit out saliva, repeat before bed.
Treatment for oral erosion and sores, inability to swallow fluids: Dang Gui Ointment. Ingredients include: Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui, 1 Liang), Belamcandae Rhizoma (Shegan), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, remove skin and navel, slice, half Liang), Honey (Bai Mi, 4 He), Porcine Fat (Zhu Zhi, 5 Liang). Six ingredients. Except honey and fat, chop others. Melt fat, filter, add chopped herbs, simmer gently until Fuzi turns yellow, filter again, add honey, boil to ointment. Store in porcelain. Contain apricot-kernel-sized amount, 3-5 times daily, swallowing saliva is allowed.
Treatment for mouth ulcers and throat obstruction: Chui Hou Po Xiao San. Ingredients include: Natrii Sulfas Crudus (Po Xiao), Natrii Nitras (Xiao Shi), Chalcanthitum (Dan Fan), Alumen (Bai Fan), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao) (all calcined), Halloysitum (burnt), Bombyx Batryticatus (Bai Jiang Can, straight ones fried), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhi, cut), Indigo Naturalis (Qing Dai, ground, equal parts). Nine ingredients. Grind to fine powder, mix well. Apply small amount to sores. For throat obstruction, blow "one character" amount into throat with brush tube, immediate relief.
Treatment for mouth ulcers and throat blockage: Huang Lian Ointment. Ingredients include: Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian, remove stamens, cut, 3 Liang), Porcine Fat (1 Jin), Honey (4 Liang), Ovis Medulla (Yang Sui, ground, 2 Liang). Four ingredients. Simmer porcine fat gently, extract oil, filter, add Huang Lian, boil until black, add Ovis Medulla, filter through silk when melted, add honey, boil several times to form ointment. Store in porcelain. Contain date-sized amount, 3-5 times daily, swallowing saliva is allowed.
Treatment for chronic mouth ulcers due to wind-heat attacking upwards: Qiang Wei Ointment. Ingredients include: Rosae Rugosae Caulis et Folium (Qiang Wei Gen), Prunus Yedoensis var. japonica Root (Yu Li Gen), Populus Dendroflexa Bark (Shui Yang Pi), Arctii Fructus Root (Niu Bang Gen) (finely cut, 1 Jin each), Xanthii Fructus (Cang Er, 1 Sheng), Vespa Nidus (Lu Feng Fang, broken, 3 pieces), Rehmanniae Radix Nova (Sheng Di Huang, cut), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui, washed/cut, 1 Liang each), Lycii Cortex (Di Gu Pi), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), Chalcanthitum (Shi Dan, ground, half Liang each), Cuprum Ustutum (Shu Tong Fen, ground), Moschus (She Xiang, ground, 1 Fen each). Fourteen ingredients. First six finely cut, boil in two Dou water to five Sheng, filter through ge cloth. Add Sheng Di Huang, Shengma, Dang Gui, Di Gu Pi, Bai Zhi, boil to two Sheng, filter through silk. Simmer to ointment, add last three powders while hot, mix well. Store in porcelain. Contain pellet-sized amount, spit saliva.
Treatment for chronic mouth ulcers: Dan Sha Ointment. Ingredients include: Cinnabaris (Dan Sha, ground, 1 Fen), Porcine Fat, Honey (each 3 Liang), Amygdalus Communis Seed (Xing Ren, soaked, peeled/pitted, double kernel, ground, 37 grains), Calomel (Ni Fen), Alumen (Bai Fan, ground), Plumbi Subcarbonas (Hu Fen, each 1 Fen), Rehmanniae Radix Nova (Sheng Di Huang, half Liang, cut/dried), Moschus (She Xiang, ground, 1 Fen). Nine ingredients. Seven ground to powder. Melt fat/honey, filter, add powders, boil ten times, filter, boil to ointment. Store in porcelain. Contain almond-sized amount wrapped in silk, spit saliva.
Treatment for chronic mouth ulcers unable to eat: Ji She Xiang Pills. Ingredients include: Litsea Cubeba Oil/Rhizome (Ji She Xiang, powder), Pinus Massoniana Resin (Song Zhi, ground, 1 Fen each), Piper Nigrum (Hu Jiao, powder, 37 grains), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, powder, 3 Fen). Four ingredients. Mix with concentrated Dalbergia Odorifera Lignum (Su Mu) decoction, make pills like Wutong seeds. Grind one pill with warm water, apply to sores.
Treatment for chronic mouth ulcers: Shao Gan San. Ingredients include: Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (Yin Chen Hao), Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xi Jiao Xie), Dendrobii Caulis (Shi Hu, remove roots), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu), Bupleuri Radix (Chai Hu, remove shoots, half Liang each), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shao Yao), Codonopsis Pilosula (Zi Shen), Platycodonis Radix (Jie Geng, cut/fried), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng, remove forks), Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui, remove bark), Evodiae Fructus (Wu Zhu Yu, soaked/boiled 3 times/dried), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen), Meliosma Oldhamii Fructus (Bai Wu Yi, 1 Fen each). Thirteen ingredients. Grind to powder. Take 5 Qian Bi, mix with 5 Liang white sheep liver (finely cut, remove fascia), 3 green onion whites, wrap in wet paper, simmer until cooked. Eat on empty stomach with rice soup.
Treatment for intermittent mouth ulcers over years, difficult eating: Qiang Wei Gen San. Ingredients include: Rosae Rugosae Caulis et Folium (Qiang Wei Gen, cut, one handful), Zanthoxyllum Bungeanum (Shu Jiao, remove eyes/closed ones, fried/sweated, 49 grains). Two ingredients. Grind to powder. Boil in two Zhan of Jiang Shui (fermented grain wash) for 5-7 boils, filter, hold hot in mouth, spit when cool.
Treatment for toothache and mouth ulcers, chronic: Chan Su Pills. Ingredients include: Bufonis Venenum (Chan Su, one piece soaked soft), Moschus (She Xiang, ground slightly). Two ingredients. Grind finely, make millet-sized pills. Wrap one in silk, bite on lesion, spit saliva.
Treatment for chronic mouth ulcers: Qiang Wei Gen Decoction. Ingredients include: Rosae Rugosae Caulis et Folium (Qiang Wei Gen, one handful).
