Discourse states: The *Neijing* (Classic of Internal Medicine) mentions that when Shen (Spirit) is in excess, laughter will not cease. This is because the Heart houses the Shen; its manifestation in sound is laughter, and its manifestation in emotion is joy. When Heart Qi is currently full and excess, the Shen is in excess; when the Shen is in excess, Yang Qi overflows outward. Therefore, the syndrome of frequent laughter arises.
Xuan Shen Tang (Scrophularia Decoction), for treating Heart excess-heat, palpitations, excessive laughter, and restlessness of the Shen:

The above eight herbs are chopped to the size of hemp seeds. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi (a traditional measuring spoon), decocted in 1.5 zhan of water until reduced to 0.8 zhan. Strain the dregs, add 1 he of Bamboo Sap (Zhuli), boil three or two times more, and take at any time.

The above ten herbs are pounded, sifted into a fine powder, and made into pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills after meals, washed down with decocted Jujube Soup.
Dan Sha Wan (Cinnabar Pill), for treating vague Shen, muttering and laughing to oneself, and abnormal behavior:

The above three herbs are mixed and ground again until uniform. Form pills with wine and wheat paste, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 10 pills with cold boiled water, at any time.
Long Chi Wan (Dragon Tooth Pill), for treating wild and overflowing Shen, excessive joy and laughter, resembling possession by evil spirits:
Ossum Draconis (Longchi), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, with heart removed), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Sheng Gan Dihuang, baked), Poria (Baifuling, with black skin removed), Asparagi Tuber (Tianmendong, with heart removed and baked), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyu), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, with forked branches removed), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Ophiopogonis Tuber (Mendong, with heart removed and baked), Lycii Cortex (Digupi, with soil removed), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, equal parts).

The above ten herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi. Decoct in 1 zhan of water in a silver vessel until reduced to 0.8 zhan. Strain and take after meals.
Dan Sha Jiu (Cinnabar Wine), for treating unsettled Shen, preference for climbing heights and approaching dangers, speech disregarding intimacy or distance, frequent self-laughter, loud shouting, abnormal behavior, constipation, dark red urine, undressing and exposing the body, and inability to settle.
Cinnabar (Dansha, half a liang, in block form), Moschus (Shexiang, ground, 2 qian).
The above two substances are finely ground and mixed uniformly. Soak in 2 sheng of pure wine (without ash) in a porcelain bottle. Warm slowly over low fire, stirring occasionally with silver chopsticks to make it hot. The dosage depends on the patient's usual alcohol tolerance, aiming to induce intoxication. Once the patient falls asleep, immediately cover them with thick clothing and blankets. Sweating indicates recovery. If the patient cannot drink much, use 1 fen of Cinnabar and 0.5 qian of Moschus in 1 sheng of wine, prepared as before, and drink frequently.
