Commentary states: The throat is the passage for the ascent and descent of Qi. If the Zang-Fu organs are harmonious and Yin and Yang ascend and descend in coordination, respiration will proceed without obstruction. Once unregulated, cold and heat syndromes may arise. Heat causes swelling and blockage of the throat, or pain extending to the mandible, hindering diet; cold causes hoarseness of voice, or a sensation of choking in the throat as if a foreign body were present. The manifestations are numerous and must be carefully examined.
Kushen Wan (Bitter Sophora Pill) for treating soreness and swelling of the throat, loss of voice, and thick, turbid phlegm and saliva:
Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, 1 fen), Baifan (Alumen calcined until dry, 0.5 liang), Shanzhiziren (Gardeniae Fructus Semen, 1 liang), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, chopped), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen, soaked in hot water, skin and tip removed, double-kernel fried, 0.5 liang each), Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 3 fen), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, raw and chopped, 1 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, forked parts removed, 0.5 liang), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and chopped), Eshi (Eupatorii Herba, fried), Bailian (Puerariae Radix, implied by context "Bai" and formula composition).
