Commentary states: The method of using medicine does not always rely on the flavor and aroma of herbs, but sometimes specifically utilizes intent. An example is the treatment of foreign bodies stuck in the throat (bone splinters) using fish nets or tiger bone. However, a net can subdue fish because fish fear the net; a tiger can subdue beasts because beasts fear the tiger. Since the objects subdued are different, the methods of application also differ.

Formula for Broad-Throat Spirit Sand Powder to treat animal bone splinters
Ingredients: Lingsha (Spirit Sand), Dansha (Cinnabar), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, raw, peeled and navel removed), Qiandan (Lead Tetroxide), Xionghuang (Realgar, each 1 fen), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Jinbo (Gold Leaf, 7 pieces), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 1 seed, peeled, heart removed, flesh taken, broken into 12 segments; each segment is blown upon while ground until all oil is removed).
The above eight ingredients are ground together into a powder. If coins or fish bones are stuck in the throat, take one "yi" (a traditional small measure) per dose. First, take three Ricinus seeds, peel them, grind them, add half a cup of hot water, stir and filter to extract the juice, then mix with the medicine powder and ingest. This will cause immediate expulsion.

Formula for Mandarin Fish Gall Bladder Decoction to treat all kinds of bone splinters, or bamboo/wood splinters stuck in the throat that cannot be swallowed.
Ingredients: Mandarinfish gall bladder.
Take this single ingredient in the twelfth lunar month, hang it under the north eaves to dry in the shade. Whenever a fish bone gets stuck, take an amount the size of a soap bean, decoct it in one he of wine, and swallow. If vomiting occurs, the bone will come out with the saliva. If it does not vomit, drink warm wine again, stopping when vomiting occurs. If it still has not come out, decoct and take another dose; there will be no case where it fails to come out. This medicine is effective even for splinters lodged in the viscera for a long time, causing pain and severe emaciation and yellowing of the complexion; ingestion will expel them. If mandarin fish are unavailable, bile from Li fish, Grass carp, or Crucian carp may also be used, but those collected in the twelfth lunar month are best.

Formula for Aconite Pills to treat bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 piece, processed until cracked, peeled and navel removed), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, bark scraped), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, weeds and leaves removed), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried), Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitratis Crystal), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried, each 1 fen).
The above six ingredients are pounded, sifted into powder, and mixed with refined honey to make pills the size of small soap beans. Contain one pill at a time and swallow the saliva. If there is no response after two tea intervals, decoct Guizhi powder in water to assist; the bone will immediately emerge.

Formula for Magnetite Pills to treat bone splinters stuck in the throat that cannot come out
Ingredients: Cishi (Magnetitum, quenched in vinegar and ground), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried), Baifanshui (Alumen residue), Niuxibang (Arctii Fructus, fried), Jiangshuijiao (Fermented rice water sediment from years past, dried and fried until purple, each 1 fen).
The above five ingredients are pounded and ground into a powder. Mix separately with fermented rice water sediment to form pills the size of Euryale seeds. Contain one pill at a time and swallow the saliva.

Formula for Alum Ash Powder to treat bone splinters stuck in the throat that cannot come out
Ingredients: Baifanshui (Alumen residue), Haiheke (Sepiae Endoconcha, shell removed), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, bark scraped), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried), Jiangshuijiao (Fermented rice water sediment from years past, dried and fried until purple, each 1 fen).
The above five ingredients are pounded, ground, and stir-fried together until black. Cool and grind finely into a powder. Take one qianbi (a spoonful measure) per dose, mix with warm wine and swallow. Increase wine intake to induce slight intoxication. Also, wrap one qianbi of the powder in cotton, hold in the mouth and swallow, cover the nose, and sneeze to expel the object.

Formula for Cartilage Powder to treat various foreign bodies stuck in the throat and pharynx
Ingredients: Chifuling (Poria cum Radice Pini, black skin removed), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried, each 0.5 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted and cut), Suaren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 1 fen).
The above four ingredients are pounded and sifted into a powder. Use two qianbi per dose, first sprinkle into the mouth, then swallow with one cup of fresh water.

Formula for Pleurotus Cubensis Pills to treat bone splinters stuck in the throat that cannot come out
Ingredients: Mabo (Lycoperdon), Baifanshui (Alumen residue), Niuxibang (Arctii Fructus, fried), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried, each 0.5 liang).
The above four ingredients are pounded and ground into powder. Mix with fermented rice water to form pills the size of cherries. Contain and dissolve, swallowing the saliva. Another version excludes Chenpi.

Formula for Ivory Pills to treat bone splinters stuck in the throat that cannot come out
Ingredients: Yaxia (Ivory shavings), Haiheke (Sepiae Endoconcha, shell removed), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried, each 1 fen).
The above three ingredients are pounded and sifted into powder. Mix with thick malt sugar from the Cold Food Festival to form pills the size of corn kernels. Contain and dissolve, swallowing the saliva.

Formula for Tangerine Sugar Pills to treat bone splinters stuck in the throat that cannot come out
Ingredients: Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried, 0.5 liang), Haiheke (Sepiae Endoconcha, shell removed), Shatang (Sugar, each 1 fen).
The above three ingredients are pounded and sifted into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of soap beans. Wrap in cotton, contain, and swallow.

Formula for Chestnut Peel Pills to treat various bone splinters stuck in the throat that cannot come out
Ingredients: Lizi rou shangpi (Skin on chestnut meat, 0.5 liang ground), Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resin, ground), Yugan (Fish liver, each 1 fen).
The above three ingredients are ground together and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Depending on the depth of the bone, wrap one pill in cotton, moisten with water, leave a cotton thread outside, and swallow. It can then be hooked out.

Formula for Jade Grinding Powder to treat all kinds of bone splinters, or bamboo/wood splinters stuck in the throat that cannot be swallowed.
Ingredients: Bamazi (Ricini Semen, shelled, 1 liang), Ningshuishi (Halloysitum, ground to powder, 2 liang).
The above two ingredients: first grind the ricinus into a paste, then gradually add the stone powder, grinding together until finished. Take a pinch, place deep at the root of the tongue, and swallow with cold water. The foreign body will naturally disappear.

Formula for Ricinus Pills to treat all kinds of foreign bodies stuck
Ingredients: Bamazi ren (Ricini Semen), Xiqu (Fine Qu starter).
The above two ingredients are equal parts, ground fine. Mix with sugar to form pills the size of soap beans. Wrap in cotton and contain; expectoration brings immediate effect.

Formula for Fish Bone Splinters Stuck in the Throat
Ingredients: Fengmi (Honey, any amount).
Decoct the honey. While hot, dip one liang of cotton into it and apply as a compress to the site of the splinter. Then heat a gourd and press it onto the cotton. Repeat if necessary. Also, blow a small amount of Gleditsia sinensis powder into the nose to expel the object.

Formula for Gou Xu Powder to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Gouxu (Bamboo fish trap whiskers, from those already used for fishing).
Burn this single ingredient to ash and grind fine. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with gruel drink and swallow.

Formula for Otter Bone to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Ta gu (Otter bone, one piece).
Contain in the mouth and swallow saliva; effect is immediate. Another method: burn to ash, mix with water and swallow.

Formula for Fish Scale Powder to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Liyu pi lin (Carassius auratus skin and scales, any amount).
Burn to ash and grind fine. Take two qianbi per dose, mix with fresh drawn water and swallow. Take more if not expelled.

Formula for Malt Sugar Pills to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Yitang (Malt sugar, any amount).
Form into pills the size of egg yolks and swallow. Gradually increase the size of the pills and swallow again for effect.

Formula for Fish Net Powder to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Bayuwang (Fishing net, one piece).
Burn to ash and grind fine. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with fresh water and swallow. Another method: place the fish net over the head of the person with the splinter; the object will descend.

Formula for Fish Bone Guide to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Yu gu (Fish bone, one piece).
Secretly have someone place the fish bone on the head of the person with the splinter without their knowledge; the object will descend.

Formula for Otter Claw Scratching to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Ta zhua (Otter claw, one piece).
Scratch the outside of the throat with this item; the object will descend.

Formula for Cormorant Powder to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Lucie maochi (Cormorant feather wing, ten pieces).
Burn to ash and grind fine. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with strong decoction of Chenpi and swallow. Alternatively, wrap in cotton, contain, and swallow; the object will descend.

Formula for Scallion White Chewing to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus).
Chew this single ingredient until soft. Tie it with a coarse thread. Hold one end of the thread, swallow the scallion down to the site of the splinter, and pull gently to bring it out.

Formula for Chicken Foot Powder to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Jizu (Chicken feet, two pieces, burned to ash).
Grind into powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with wine and swallow; it comes out immediately.

Formula for Mugwort Wine to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Aihao (Artemisiae Argyi Herba, one handful, cut).
Decoct with one cup of water and one cup of wine until reduced to 80%. Remove dregs and divide into two warm doses.

Formula for Deer Tendon Pulling to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Lu jin (Deer tendon, any amount).
Soak until soft. Roll into a cord the size of a marble. Hold one end, swallow to the site of the splinter, and slowly pull out. Highly effective.

Formula for Rose Root Powder to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Qiangwei gen (Rosa rugosa root, any amount).
Pound into powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with water and swallow, three times daily. Also treats arrows or splinters embedded in membranes that cannot be removed, and rat fistula. After ten days of administration, they will penetrate the skin and exit.

Formula for Lily Powder to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 5 liang).
Pound and sift into powder. Mix with honey water, apply to cloth, and bind around the neck. Severe cases require no more than three to five applications.

Formula for Fish Tail Guide to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Yu wei (Fish tail, one piece).
Place this inside the collar; the condition will heal.

Formula for Upright Bamboo Soup to treat fish bone splinters stuck in the throat
Take upright dead bamboo, two chi above the ground. Scrape off the skin, split thinly like counting rods. Take seven or nine stalks. Decoct in two cups of water until reduced to 70%. Remove dregs and take in one dose.

Formula for Cassia Fragrance Powder to treat goose, duck, and chicken bones stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, bark scraped, 0.5 liang), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried, 1 fen).
Pound and sift into powder. Take one qianbi per dose, wrap in cotton, contain and swallow. After ten applications, the bone softens and gradually dissolves.

Formula for Eagle Ash Powder to treat meat splinters stuck in the throat
Ingredients: Ying fen (Eagle feces, burned to ash).
Grind fine into powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with water and swallow. Feces of tigers, wild wolves, and eagles are also usable.

Formula for Tiger Bone Powder to treat various beast bone splinters
Ingredients: Hu gu (Tiger bone).
Pound and grind fine. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with water and swallow. Leopard bone is also acceptable.

Formula for Chicken Wing Feather Powder to treat food stuck in the throat unable to be swallowed
Ingredients: Bai xiongji zuoyou chi da mao (Large feathers from left and right wings of white rooster, one each).
Burn to ash in a copper vessel. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with rice drink and swallow.

Formula for Hair Ash Powder to treat sudden obstruction during eating, not descending and circling the throat
Ingredients: Luanfa (Disordered hair, one ball, burned to ash).
Grind into fine powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with gruel drink and swallow.

Formula for Pinellia Powder to treat iron thorns, bamboo, wood, and other foreign bodies stuck in the throat, or splinters embedded in flesh unable to be removed
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed seven times in hot water), Bailian (Trichosanthis Radix, each 2 liang).
Pound and sift into powder. Take half a qianbi per dose, mix with wine and swallow, three times daily. Banxia irritates the throat; resolve toxicity with fresh ginger juice.

Formula for Two Whites Powder to treat various foreign bodies
Ingredients: Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Bailian (Trichosanthis Radix, each 1 fen).
Pound and sift into powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with water and swallow.

Formula for Pinellia and Baizhi Powder to treat various foreign bodies
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed seven times in hot water), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, each 0.5 liang).
Pound and sift into powder. Take one qianbi per dose, mix with water and swallow; induces vomiting to expel the object.

Formula for Swallowing Pig Fat to treat various foreign bodies
Ingredients: Zhigao (Pig fat).
Swallow a piece the size of an apricot kernel. If not expelled, swallow another.

Formula for Swallowing Honey to treat various foreign bodies
Use one spoonful of good honey, swallow slowly. Effective.

Formula for Mole Head Powder to treat various foreign bodies and splinters unable to come out
Ingredients: Lougu tou (Mole head, one piece).
Make into powder, wrap in cotton, contain and swallow saliva. Do not let the patient know. If the splinter does not come out, apply to the wound; it will exit naturally.

Formula for Red Mulberry Swallowing to treat bone splinters stuck in the throat that cannot come out
Ingredients: Shenzi (Mulberry fruit, red ones, any amount).
Chew finely before bed. First swallow saliva, then swallow the residue. Rinse with fresh water. If fresh is unavailable, dry red mulberries and grind into powder.

Formula to treat various foreign bodies
Grind charcoal skin into extremely fine powder. If charcoal skin is unavailable, hard charcoal is acceptable. Mix with gruel drink, take two qianbi, four to five times daily, until the foreign body descends.

Formula to treat fish bone splinters
Ingredients: Yaxiang (Ivory, 1 liang).
Grind into powder regardless of amount. Form pills the size of corn kernels with sugar. Contain one pill at a time and swallow saliva.
