Commentary states: When a person is afflicted by the "Shegong" (Shooting Worker) insect, initially no ulcer has formed, but there are sensations of aversion to wind, aversion to cold, and fever. The skin feels as if pricked by needle points. Gradually, an ulcer forms, starting the size of a bean, with pain resembling fire burning. The symptoms resemble Taiyang disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic factors affecting the Taiyang meridian) or sudden evil invasion (Zhong E), where some patients may lose the ability to speak. The body suffers from stiffness, limbs are cramped and tense, headache occurs, bones ache, the mouth opens frequently with yawning. Symptoms decrease in the morning and worsen in the evening. After three days, bleeding from teeth may occur; urgent treatment is required. If treatment is delayed beyond seven days, the condition becomes critical, and death will not exceed seven days. The Shegong is also known as "Yu" (Hidden One) or "Duanhu" (Short Fox). It is black in color, shaped like a large mosquito, and exists in male and female forms. From spring to autumn, it dwells in stream waters; in winter, it burrows into the soil to hide. It exhales warm vapor, so that frost and snow falling upon it do not freeze. While in water, humans walking near or bathing in the water can be poisoned by its toxic qi. When rainwater rises and flows into homes, or when people encounter it on roads, it holds sand in its mouth and shoots at human shadows. Hence the name "Shegong," implying it can shoot shadows like the earwig (Quliu), with such skill that it inevitably hits. Another legend claims the Shegong has a transverse bone in its mouth, shaped like a crossbow, using poison to shoot people; this belief originates from here.
Formula for Ge Yu Gao (Cordyline and Coptis Ointment) to treat affliction by Shegong with aversion to wind, cold, and fever:
Yege (Cordyceps militaris or related herb, 1 sheng), Yinyu (Rhododendron molle or similar), Yangzhizhu (Rhododendron molle), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, peeled and navel removed, used raw), Dansha (Cinnabar, ground, each 1 liang), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, peeled, heart and membrane removed).
The above ten ingredients, except those requiring grinding, are crushed into powder. Using 3 jin of pig fat (Zhogao) that has not touched water, first add eight ingredients and decoct through three cycles of boiling and cooling ("three up, three down"). Strain the dregs, then add ground Dansha and Xionghuang (Realgar). Stir until solidified. Take a piece the size of a jujube pit, rub onto the painful area. Avoid contact with eyes.
