Commentary states: When a person sinks into water, water entering the abdomen causes Qi obstruction, leading to sudden cessation of breath and death. The method of rescue is to drain the water from the body so that Qi circulation can be restored, allowing for revival. If rescue is delayed and water cannot be expelled, and the area below the heart (epigastrium) is not warm, treatment is difficult. Ancient methods suggest that even after half a day or a full day, there may still be hope for treatment, on the grounds that although vital breath has ceased, if warmth remains in the epigastrium, revival is possible.
Treatment for drowning death occurring half a day prior:
Place a large earthenware jar upside down on the ground. Position the drowned victim with their abdomen resting on the mouth of the jar. Light a gentle fire underneath the jar, directly opposite the victim's epigastrium. Soon, the epigastrium will warm up, and water will drain from the mouth; the victim will revive. Do not allow the temperature to become too high.
Draining Water Formula for Drowning Death:
Take powder of Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zaojiao, 皂荚), mix with water to form pills the size of a walnut. Wrap in cotton and insert into the anus. Have the patient lie prone. Soon, water will discharge from the nose and mouth. Cover the body with ash to retain heat. Once the water is fully discharged, the patient will survive.
Draining Water Formula for Drowning Death (for cases lasting overnight):
If the drowning occurred overnight, take Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zaojiao, 皂荚), pound it and sieve into fine powder. Mix with jujube pulp to form pills the size of a marble. Insert into the anus, and water will discharge.
Pine Oil Administration Formula for Drowning Death:
Take one cup of Pinus Massoniana Seed Oil (Songzi You, 松子油) and administer orally; the patient will revive.
Scallion Juice Draining Formula for Drowning Death:
Take unrotten Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zaojiao, 皂荚), pound and sieve into fine powder. Grind white parts of Allium fistulosum (Congbai, 葱白) to extract juice. Mix with the powder to form pills the size of a date pit. Insert into the anus; this is effective.
Moxibustion Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims After Overnight:
Undress the deceased and apply moxibustion to the Shenque acupoint (Qizhong, 脐中).
Alcohol Administration Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims:
Hang the deceased upside down. Instill good quality wine into the nostrils and also into the anus. Alternatively, vinegar instilled into the nostrils is also acceptable.
Water Evacuation Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims:
Position the deceased face-up on your back, carry them while walking briskly. If they vomit water, they will revive.
Salt-Induced Emesis Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims:
Spread ash from the stove five inches thick on the ground. Place an earthen steamer (Zeng, 甑) on its side on the ash. Lay the deceased prone on the steamer, with the head slightly lowered. Take two "fang cun bi" (a traditional measure) of salt, place it in a tube, and blow it into the mouth. The patient should vomit water. Then remove the steamer and place the deceased in the ash to cover the body, ensuring the nose and mouth are not blocked. The patient will revive.
Ash Permeation Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims:
Dig a pit and pour several hu (a unit of volume) of ash to warm the bottom. Place the deceased on top of the ash. Replace the ash when it becomes wet. Ensure the ash is not too hot to avoid burning the skin; replace if it cools down. The patient will revive within half a day.
Formula for Sudden Drowning Death:
Lay the deceased supine to drain water. Cover the abdomen generously with ash. Blow powder of Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zaojiao, 皂荚) into the nostrils. The patient will revive.
Water Extraction Method for Drowning Death:
Position the deceased facing an earthenware jar, lowering the head to allow saliva and water to drain out. This is beneficial.
Ear Blowing Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims:
Undress the victim, clean debris from the Shenque acupoint (Qizhong, 脐中), and vigorously blow into both ears. This is effective.
Sand Permeation Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims:
Cover the deceased above and below with heated sand, leaving only the nose and ears exposed. Replace the sand when it becomes wet.
Calcined Stone Coverage Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims:
Apply Calcined Stone (Duanshi, 锻石) to cover the body. Wait until water discharges from the anus; the patient will revive.
Formula for Winter Drowning with Limb Rigidity and Locked Jaw but Remaining Vitality:
Heat ash and place it in a cloth bag. Apply thinly to the epigastrium; replace when cool. Once warmth reaches the heart region, the eyes will move, and the jaw will open. Administer warm urine or clear rice gruel slowly. The patient will revive. If the heart is not warmed first and fire is applied directly to the body, the cold pathogen and fire energy will contend, leading to death.
Reed Fire Fumigation Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims:
Use a large earthen steamer (Zeng, 甑). Have the deceased lie prone on it, with the mouth near the opening. Burn fourteen bundles of reed fire under the steamer, directly beneath the epigastrium, to generate smoke. Allow the smoke to enter the nose and mouth gently. The patient will revive once water is discharged. Replenish fire as needed to keep the epigastrium warm. If no steamer is available, dig a pit by the shore shaped like a steamer with a hollow base like a stove, and heat it. Place the deceased on it without covering the abdomen. Lower the head to facilitate water drainage. Cover with several hu of warm ash; replace when cool.
Ash Burial Formula for Reviving Drowning Victims:
Simply bury the deceased in warm ash, covering the head and feet completely, leaving only the seven orifices (two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, and mouth) exposed.
