Discourse states: Zhu Qi (疰气, a type of chronic abdominal disease characterized by tightness and pain) refers to the condition where the abdomen around the navel becomes tight, hard, and painful on both left and right sides, extending horizontally like an arm. Its tension is likened to the tightness of a bowstring. Hence it is called Zhu Qi. This is generally caused by improper regulation of cold and heat, excessive sexual activity, leading to deficiency and exhaustion of True Yang (Zhen Yang, the fundamental yang energy). Internal generation of yin-cold causes water-fluids entering the stomach to fail in digestion and transformation. These fluids flow into the hypochondriac region. If not removed over time, they become a stubborn disease. When exposed to yin-cold or consuming cold foods, pain occurs. Prolonged illness leads to inability to eat and emaciation.
