Commentary states: The *Neijing* (Inner Canon) mentions that during the late summer season, one is prone to "Dongxie" (cavity diarrhea) and "Hanzhong" (cold center). "Dongxie" refers to defecation immediately after eating. It is a severe form of "Sunxie" (diarrhea with undigested food). This condition arises because wind pathogen was injured in spring; the pathogen lingers, manifesting as Sunxie in summer, and as Dongxie in late summer. Generally, in spring, Yang Qi floats on the exterior. Being struck by wind pathogen, it enters the meridians but has not yet reached the Zang-Fu organs. Wind belongs to Yang Qi and corresponds to the East and Wood in the Five Elements. Wood overcomes Earth, thus affecting the Spleen and Stomach. Mid-summer is when Yang Qi is abundant. With Yang pathogenic Qi encountering peak Yang abundance, extreme Yang transforms into Yin. The disease location is in the Spleen and Stomach, hence presenting as Sunxie. Yin Qi generates at the Summer Solstice (Wu hour) and becomes prosperous at Minor Heat (Wei hour), which constitutes the late summer period. At this time, Spleen Earth governs. The Spleen is the "extreme Yin within Yin," so Yin Qi becomes prosperous. Excess Yin generates internal cold, causing the internal organs to become cold and lead to uncontrolled diarrhea. This forms the pathology of Dongxie Hanzhong.
Treatment for Dongxie Hanzhong, where stool flows like water mixed with undigested food, or dysentery with red and white discharge, and food remains for a long time before being expelled without digestion, use Fuzi Wan Formula:
