Figure of the Jia-Yin Year's Climate and Pathology
Shaoyang Ministerial Fire governs the Si Tian (Heavenly Command), Jueyin Wind Wood governs the Zai Quan (Earthly Foundation), and the Central Movement is Tai Gong Earth. The Earth movement is excessive, causing the Qi transformation to operate ahead of time. Fire transformation is above, Clearness transformation is on the left, Acidity transformation is below, Scorching transformation is on the left, and Storage transformation is on the right. Therefore, the Heaven Qi is upright and its administration is strict; the Earth Qi is disturbed and its orders are chaotic. Winds rise suddenly, trees lie prostrate and sand flies; flames flow, Yin moves within Yang and transforms into Rain, which falls at the proper season. Wind and Heat intermingle, clouds and phenomena boil. Taiyin Dampness flows horizontally, Cold arrives at its time, and cool rains arise together. The number for Fire transformation is two, for Rain transformation is five, and for Wind transformation is eight; these are the degrees of correct transformation. Fire and Wood share the same virtue, corresponding above to Yinghuo (Mars) and Suixing (Jupiter). The grains are red (Dan) and green/blue (Cang); feathered creatures are quiet, and furred creatures breed. This is what is suitable for the year's things. Shell-bearing insects are consumed, and clear toxins do not arise; all this is restricted by Earth Qi. People suffer from Cold in the middle, external sores and ulcers, and internal diarrhea and fullness. The sages, encountering this, adopt a harmonious but non-contentious approach. When wind recurs, people suffer from cold-heat alternating disorders, malaria, diarrhea, deafness, blindness/dizziness, vomiting, upper body oppression with swelling, and color changes. In this year, Yang represents Heaven Qi, and Yin represents Earth Qi. Heaven Qi is full, and Earth Qi is deficient. One should first take the source of transformation to level the Fire Qi, suppress the excessive Earth movement, and assist the overcoming element (Water overcomes Fire, or Metal overcomes Wood, etc.), so that violent excesses will not arise and harsh diseases will not occur.
The year favors Salty, Pungent, and Sour flavors. Treatments include draining, purging, soaking, and inducing sweating. Observe the cold and warmth of the Qi to regulate excesses. If the movement differs leading to Wind-Heat, use Cold transformations sparingly. The transformation above should be Salty-Cold, the middle Salty-Mild, and the bottom Pungent-Cool; this is appropriate for medicines and foods.
The year follows the Earth movement, and Heaven Qi generates the movement. Before the midpoint of the year, Heaven Qi dominates. If Fire exuberance prevails, warm Qi circulates, and the Metal administration is unbalanced. People suffer from headache, fever, aversion to cold, and malaria; heat above causes skin pain; color changes to yellow/red; it transmits to become water retention, causing edema of the body and face, abdominal fullness,仰息 (dyspnea when lying flat), diarrhea with red and white discharge, sores and ulcers, cough, hemoptysis, vexation, and heat in the chest. Severe cases involve rhinorrhea and epistaxis. The disease originates in the Lung. Diagnosis is via the pulse at Tianfu (LU3). The method is to level with Salty-Cold, assist with Bitter-Sweet, astringe with Sour, disperse with Bitter, and restore with Sour.
After the midpoint of the year, Earth Qi dominates. If Wind exuberance prevails, Earth Qi becomes unclear, plains become dim, and grasses flower early. People suffer from shivering chills, frequent stretching and yawning, heart pain with limb fullness, tightness in the hypochondrium, inability to eat, obstruction in the diaphragm and throat, vomiting after eating, abdominal distension with frequent belching. After defecation and passing gas, they feel relieved as if weakened. The whole body feels heavy. The treatment uses Pungent-Cool, assisted by Bitter, eased with Sweet, and dispersed with Pungent.
The transformation of the annual movement is called "Dun Fu" (Piled High), known as Broad Transformation. It has dense virtue and tranquility, following growth to fill up, with Extreme Yin internally solid, and things transforming to completion. Smoke and dust are hazy and郁 (oppressed), seen in thick earth. Heavy rains often occur, Dampness functions, and Dryness administration retreats. Its transformation is round, its Qi abundant, its administration quiet, and its orders complete. Its movement involves damp accumulation. Its virtue is soft, moist, heavy, and glutinous. Its change involves shock and sudden gusts. Its transformation combines with what it overcomes. Its disease involves abdominal fullness and inability to move the limbs. Thus, when Earth movement is excessive, rain and dampness circulate, and Kidney Water suffers evil. People suffer from abdominal fullness, cold extremities, unhappiness, heavy body, and vexation. Severe cases involve muscle atrophy, foot weakness and inability to hold, frequent spasms while walking, and pain under the feet. Fluid retention causes middle fullness, reduced appetite, and inability to move the limbs. If the change occurs in its proper place, Zang Qi is latent, and Transformation Qi rules alone. Springs gush, rivers overflow, dry marshes produce fish, great winds and rains arrive, earth collapses, and scaled creatures appear on land. Diseases include abdominal fullness, loose stools, borborygmus, and reverse downward flow. If the Da Xi pulse is absent in severe cases, it is untreatable. The method is to use Salty flavor to harmonize the middle.
First Qi: From Shen hour on Great Cold day of Gui-Chou year to Wu hour on Spring Equinox day of this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. Principal Position is Tai Jiao Wood, Guest Qi is Shaoyin Ministerial Fire, Central Movement is Earth. Wood generates Fire. Earth Qi migrates, Wind wins and shakes, Cold departs, climate becomes very warm, grass and trees bloom early. Cold comes but does not kill, so Warm diseases arise. Diseases involve Qi oppression above, blood effusion, red eyes, cough and counterflow Qi, headache, hypochondriac fullness, sores in skin and pores. Treat the Shaoyin Guest Qi: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, astringe with Sour. Annual grain should be Red (Dan), intermittent grain should be Beans. Even if there is Heat Evil, it cannot cause harm.
Second Qi: From Wu Zheng (noon) on Spring Equinox day to Chen Zheng (morning) on Grain Full day, totaling over 60 days. Principal Position is Shao Zheng Fire, Guest Qi is Taiyin Damp Earth, Central Movement is Earth. Qi and Movement are the same. Sqi is Fire transformation. Fire is repressed, white haze rises everywhere, clouds go to the Rain House, Wind cannot overcome Dampness, rain falls. People are healthy. Diseases involve heat oppression above, cough and vomiting, sores in the middle, chest and throat obstruction, headache, fever, drowsiness, and suppurative sores. Treat the Taiyin Guest Qi: tonify with Sweet, drain with Bitter, ease with Sweet. Annual grain should be Red, intermittent grain should be Hemp seeds. Even if there is Damp Evil, it cannot cause harm. Do not violate the Sqi.
Third Qi: From Si Chu (early morning) on Grain Full day to Mao Chu (dawn) on Great Heat day, totaling over 60 days. Principal Position is Shao Zheng Fire, Guest Qi is Shaoyang Ministerial Fire, Central Movement is Earth. Fire occupies its position. Heaven's administration spreads, hot summer arrives, Shaoyang is above, rain ceases. People suffer from heat in the middle, deafness, blindness/dizziness, blood effusion, suppurative sores, cough, vomiting, rhinorrhea, epistaxis, thirst, sneezing, yawning, sore throat, red eyes, and sudden death. Regulate the Shaoyang Guest Qi: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, [verb missing] with Salty. Annual grain should be Red, intermittent grain should be Beans. Even if there is Fire transformation, it cannot become evil.
Fourth Qi: From Mao Zheng (dawn) on Great Heat day to Chou Zheng (early morning) on Autumn Equinox day, totaling over 60 days. Principal Position is Tai Gong Earth, Guest Qi is Yangming Dry Metal, Central Movement is Earth. Yearly Earth is in position, Cool arrives, hot summer transforms intermittently, White Dew descends. People's Qi is peaceful. Disease involves whole-body heaviness. Regulate the Yangming Guest Qi: tonify with Sour, drain with Pungent, drain with Bitter. Annual grain should be Green/Cyan (Cang), intermittent grain should be Millet (Shu). Even if there is Dryness Evil, it cannot cause harm.
Fifth Qi: From Yin Chu (early morning) on Autumn Equinox day to Zi Chu (midnight) on Light Snow day, totaling over 60 days. Principal Position is Shao Shang Metal, Guest Qi is Taiyin Cold Water, Central Movement is Earth. Cold and Clear intersect, Yang departs, Cold arrives, rain falls, Gate Qi closes, rigid wood withers early. People avoid Cold Evil, gentlemen are careful. Regulate the Taiyin Guest Qi: tonify with Bitter, drain with Salty, firm with Bitter, moisten with Pungent. Annual grain should be Green/Cyan, intermittent grain should be Ji (Broomcorn millet). Even if there is Cold Evil, it cannot cause harm.
Final Qi: From Zi Zheng (midnight) on Light Snow day to Xu Zheng (evening) on Great Cold day, totaling over 60 days. Principal Position is Tai Yu Water, Guest Qi is Jueyin Wind Wood, Central Movement is Earth. Wood controls Earth, Earth Qi is correct, Wind arrives, things regenerate, fog/mist moves. Diseases involve closure without release (constipation/urinary retention), uncontrollable heart pain, Yang not storing leading to cough. Treat the Jueyin Guest Qi: tonify with Pungent, drain with Sour, ease with Sweet. Annual grain should be Green/Cyan, intermittent grain should be Rice. Even if there is Wind Evil, it cannot cause harm.
At the transition of year Qi, if Heaven Qi wins, Taiyin復 (revenge) acts. If Earth Qi wins, Yangming復 acts. Observe the arrival of revenge, do not assist the winning Qi, do not aid the revenge Qi. Treat according to the law: Cold is treated with Heat, Clear/Cold is treated with Warmth. Let each Qi be at peace, then Evil Qi declines and returns to its origin. This is the general principle of treatment.
