Discussion: The condition of having a mass (Pi Ji) and being unable to eat is caused by the deficiency and weakness of the Spleen and Stomach, which are invaded by cold pathogenic factors. The Spleen and Stomach are the officials responsible for storage and transformation; their Qi should be unobstructed to facilitate the transmission and digestion of waste products, and the reception and assimilation of food and fluids. Patients with Pi Ji suffer from long-term accumulation of cold pathogenic factors in the abdomen, which fails to nourish the Zang-Fu organs. Since the Spleen and Stomach are weak and pathogenic factors stagnate, they experience only abdominal distension due to deficiency and are unable to eat.
