论曰白癞之候。语声嘶嗄。目视不明。四肢 痹。关节热痛如火燔灼。脊膂拘急。肉如
刀劈。手足缓弱。身体瘾疹。鼻生息肉。目生白珠。肉色斑白。故谓之白癞也。
治白癞。蝮蛇头丸方

上二味。锉如大豆粒。用水三斗五升。煎至一斗。压去滓。于银石器中。慢火煎如稠饧
。每服半匙。荆芥薄荷酒调下。不拘时。日二夜一。一月见效。
治白癞。苦参酒方
苦参（去土皮心锉二斤） 露蜂房（锉五两）
上二味。用水三斗。煮取一斗五升。去滓浸法曲三斤。经三宿。炊黍米二斗。酝如常法
。酒熟每食后。饮一合。日二夜一。加至三合。以瘥为度。
治遍身白点。搔之屑落。或痒或痛。色白渐展。世呼白癞。苦参酒方

Discussion: The manifestations of Bai Lai (White Leprosy) include hoarseness of voice, blurred vision, numbness and obstruction in the four limbs, hot pain in joints as if burning, stiffness and tension of the spine and back muscles, skin and flesh feeling as if split by a knife, weakness of hands and feet, urticaria on the body, nasal polyps, white films over the eyes, and mottled skin color. Hence it is called Bai Lai.
Treatment for Bai Lai, Fushetou Wan (Viper Head Pill) Formula:
Fushe Tou (Roasted Viper Head, scorched), Shepi (Snake Skin, scorched), Kui Ge (Roasted Tridacna Gigas), Qicao (Raw Ascaris Scarabaeidae Larva, one each), Shizhi (Raw Leech), Mengchong (Raw Blue Bottle Fly, wings and legs removed), Geshang Tingchang (Raw Meloe, wings and legs removed, seven each), Wugong (Roasted Centipede, two pieces), Da Zhizhu (Stir-fried Large Spider, three pieces), Tubiechong (Roasted Ground Beetle, four pieces), Leiwan (Pounded Alisma Rhizome, forty pieces), Fuzi (Cracked and Roasted Aconite Lateral Root, skin and navel removed, three pieces), Shuiyin (Mercurius), Dansha (Cinnabar, one tael each), Xiaoshi (Potassium Nitrate, one fen, ground together with Shuiyin and Dansha until mercurial stars disappear, stir-fried with vinegar), Dahuang (Chopped and Stir-fried Rheum Palmatum Rhizome), Gui (Cinnamon Twig, coarse bark removed), Huashi (Talcum Powder, ground to powder), Gansui (Stir-fried with Sesame Seed, sesame not used), Ganxi (Stir-fried until sweat appears), Mangxiao (Sodium Sulfate, ground to powder, half tael each), Badou (Skin and heart removed, stir-fried, fifteen grains), Longgu (Ground, three parts), Fanshi (Calcined Alum, ground to powder), Huanglian (Mustache removed, one fen each), Lingqi Jia (Roasted Pangolin Scale).
The above twenty-eight ingredients are pounded and ground to an extremely fine powder, passed through a fine sieve. Mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take two pills per dose, swallowed with warm wine on an empty stomach and before bed. Can be increased to three pills. If experiencing dysuria, add one to two more pills. Stop when effective.
Treatment for Bai Lai Feng (White Leprosy Wind), Tianma Jian (Gastrodia Decoction) Formula:
Tianma (Raw Gastrodia Elata Rhizome, one jin half), Mutianliao (Raw Arisaema Cum Bile, three jin).
The above two ingredients are chopped to the size of soybeans. Boil in 3.5 dou of water until reduced to 1 dou. Filter out the dregs. Slowly boil in a silver or ceramic vessel until thick like syrup. Take half a spoon per dose, mixed with Jingjie (Schizonepeta) and Bohe (Mint) wine. Time is not restricted. Twice daily, once at night. Effective within one month.
Treatment for Bai Lai, Kushen Jiu (Sophora Wine) Formula:
Kushen (Dirt, outer bark, and core removed, chopped, two jin), Lufengfang (Chopped Honeycomb, five liang).
The above two ingredients are boiled in 3 dou of water to obtain 1.5 dou. Remove dregs and soak Faqu (Medicated Leaven) for three nights. Then steam 2 dou of millet and ferment according to usual methods. After fermentation, drink one ge after meals. Twice daily, once at night. Increase to three ge. Stop when cured.
Treatment for widespread white spots, scaling upon scratching, itching or pain, spreading whiteness, commonly known as Bai Lai, Kushen Jiu (Sophora Wine) Formula:
Kushen (Dirt, outer bark, and core removed, chopped, five jin), Lufengfang (Chopped Honeycomb, five liang), Shepi (Chopped Snake Skin, one piece).
The above three ingredients are boiled in 6 dou of water to obtain 3 dou. Remove dregs and soak Xiqu (Fine Medicated Leaven) for three nights. Steam 3 dou of millet and ferment according to usual methods. After fermentation, drink 3 to 5 ge per dose. Twice daily, once at night. Stop when cured.
Treatment for Bai Lai Dafeng (Great Wind Leprosy), with loss of eyebrows and beard, Ba Feng (Eight Winds) and Shi Er Bi (Twelve Obstructions), tendon and vessel stiffness, limb weakness, hand and foot numbness, Shanglu Jiu (Phytolacca Root Wine) Formula:
Shanglugen (Peel removed, chopped, twenty-five jin).
The above single ingredient is boiled in 15 dou of water to obtain 8 dou. Remove dregs and soak 15 jin of Xiqu. Steam 1 shi of millet and ferment according to usual methods. After fermentation, drink 3 to 5 ge warm per dose. Twice daily, once at night. For severe cases, take up to 3 dou. For mild cases, up to 2 dou. Vomiting or purging after taking the medicine is considered good. Only deer meat should be eaten.
Treatment for Bai Lai Aiye Jiu (Artemisia Annua Wine) Formula:
Dry Aiye (Boil strongly to extract juice; use 5 liang of Aiye for every 1 dou of Mi Qu).
The above single ingredient is used to mix and soak the Qu and rice according to quantity. Ferment according to usual methods. After fermentation, drink slightly at any time. Maintain a continuous mild intoxication.
Treatment for Bai Lai, External Application Formula:
Geshang Tingchang (Seven times four pieces, wings and legs removed, stir-fried with Glutinous Rice until rice is cooked, do not use rice), Gan Fushe (One piece, head and tail intact, roasted yellow, scales removed).
The above two ingredients are pounded and sifted. Stored in a raw silk bag. Boil in 5 sheng of wine in a porcelain bottle over slow fire until less than 1 sheng remains. Dip a cotton bag into the medicinal liquid. Rub and apply to the lesion. Twice daily, once at night. If not urgently painful, can apply 5 to 7 times day and night.
Treatment for Bai Lai, with hoarse voice, limb numbness, itching and sores, Wushe San (Black Snake Powder) Formula:
Wushe (Soaked in wine, skin and bones removed, roasted), Gegen (Chopped, one tael and one fen each), Kushen, Zishen, Shashen, Renshen, Xiongqiong, Tianma, Cangzhu, Shuodiao, Mulanpi (Coarse bark removed), Huanglian (Mustache removed), Fuzi (Cracked and Roasted, skin and navel removed), Wutou (Cracked and Roasted, skin and navel removed), Niuxi (Sprouts removed), Binglang (Baked and Chopped), Shugan Dihuang (Cut and Baked), Weirui, Shaoyao, Gui (Coarse bark removed), Xuanshen (Hard texture), Longgu (Ground), Shigao (Ground to powder), Shengma, Juhua (Unopened, lightly stir-fried), Jili Zi (Stir-fried, spines removed), Qinjiao (Sprouts and dirt removed), Xixin (Sprouts and leaves removed), Tianxiong (Cracked and Roasted, skin and navel removed, one tael each), Danggui (Cut and Baked), Gancao (Stir-fried and Chopped), Yuanzhi (Heart removed), Bajitian (Heart removed), Cang'erhua (Stir-dried, three liang half each).
The above forty-two ingredients are pounded and ground into a fine powder. Take two qianbi per dose, mixed with warm wine on an empty stomach. Gradually increase to three qianbi. Take again at dusk.
Treatment for Bai Lai, with hoarse voice, blurred vision, limb numbness, joint hot pain, body urticaria, nasal polyps, Baihua She San (White-spotted Snake Powder) Formula:
