Discourse states: The condition of the eye growing "pearl tubes" (concretions or pterygium-like growths) arises from wind-heat and phlegm-fluids infiltrating the Liver, causing blood and Qi to accumulate and stagnate, and body fluids to condense. The Liver stores blood; thus, when the Liver receives blood, vision is enabled. When Qi flows smoothly and blood is harmonious, essence manifests in the eyes. Now, pathogenic factors invade the Liver, causing Liver Qi pathology. Affected by the steaming of wind-heat and gradual infiltration of phlegm-fluids, blood and Qi become congested and obstructed, rushing upward to the eyes. Body fluids condense, taking a shape resembling pearl tubes, hence the name.
