Discussion states: When the Liver Meridian is deficient and Wind-Evil invades, it causes itching of the eyes; when Heart-Heat is excessive and blood flow surges, it causes redness of the eyes. These two symptoms have their respective origins. Now, if there is both redness and itching, along with tight eyelids, it is because Wind-Heat is interacting internally while being externally exposed to Cold-Qi, resulting in such a syndrome. There are also cases where itching precedes pain; this is because the pathogenic toxin is vigorous, preventing the smooth circulation of Qi and Blood, thus causing intermittent pain.
