Discussion: The eyes are the gathering place of the essence and vitality of the Zang-Fu organs, the external manifestation of the Liver (Gan), and the pathway for body fluids (Jin-Ye). If the Zang-Fu organs harbor heat pathogens that internally steam the Liver, causing heat to surge upward to the eyes, it leads to a hot, astringent, and stagnant condition in the fluid pathways, resulting in accumulation at the eyelids. This manifests as ocular discharge (Chi).
Formula for Ze Xie Wan (Alisma Pill) to treat ocular discharge caused by heat pathogens in the Zang-Fu organs surging upward to the eyes and stagnating body fluids:
Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Chong Wei Zi (Fructus Leonuri), Tu Si Zi (Semen Cuscutae, soaked in wine and pounded separately), Shi Hu (Caulis Dendrobii, roots removed), Di Fu Zi (Fructus Kochiae), Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae), Sheng Gan Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, baked) each 1 liang; Shan Yu (Radix Dioscoreae) 1.5 liang; Xi Xin (Herba Asari, seedlings and leaves removed) 0.5 liang.
The above nine ingredients are pounded, sifted into powder, mixed with refined honey, and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, swallowed with warm water on an empty stomach, and repeat before bedtime.
Formula for Ling Yang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Powder) to treat ocular discharge caused by wind-heat attacking the Liver and steaming upward to the eyes:
Ling Yang Jiao (Cornu Saigae Tataricae, shaved) 2 liang; Xi Jiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, shaved) 1 liang; Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, forked parts removed); Niu Xi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, seedlings removed); Qiang Huo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii, rhizome head removed); Sang Bai Pi (Cortex Mori Radicis, chopped); Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae); Sheng Gan Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, baked); Bai Ji Li (Fructus Tribuli, stir-fried and thorns removed); Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba or Rubra) each 3 fen.
The above ten ingredients are pounded, sifted into powder. Take 2 qian bi (approx. 6-9 grams) per dose, decoct with one cup of water until reduced to 0.6 cups. Do not filter the dregs. Take warm after meals and before bedtime.
Formula for Qin Pi Tang (Bark of Ash Tree Decoction) for washing eyes affected by ocular discharge:
Qin Pi (Cortex Fraxini, coarse bark removed); Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri, seedlings removed); Huang Bo (Cortex Phellodendri, coarse bark removed); Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, roots removed); She Xian (Herba Patriniae) each 2 liang; Ku Zhu Ye (Folium Bambusae) two handfuls; Xi Xin (Herba Asari, seedlings and leaves removed) 1 liang.
The above seven ingredients are coarsely pounded, sieved, and mixed evenly. Use 2 liang per dose, decoct with six cups of water until three cups remain. Filter and wash the eyes while hot; re-warm if cooled.
Formula for Zeng Qing San (Azurite Powder) for instilling into eyes affected by ocular discharge:
Zeng Qing (Chalcanthum) 1 liang; Shui Jing (Quartz) 1 liang; Long Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) equal amount; Zhen Zhu (Margarita) equal amount; Hu Po (Electrum) 0.5 liang.
The above five ingredients are ground into fine powder and stored in a copper vessel. Before bedtime, use copper tweezers to apply a quantity the size of a millet grain into the eye.
Formula for Rui Ren Gao (Prunus Persica Kernel Ointment) for instilling into eyes affected by ocular discharge:
Rui Ren (Semen Pruni Persicae, pounded); Ma Ti Jue Ming (Fructus Cassiae obtusifoliae, pounded into powder); Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, roots removed, pounded into powder) each 1 liang; Huang Bo (Cortex Phellodendri, coarse bark removed, pounded into powder) 3 fen.
The above four ingredients are each made into fine powder. Mix with 2 sheng of clear white honey. Place in a copper vessel, seal tightly with oil paper, and steam over rice until the rice is cooked. Remove, squeeze out the dregs using cotton cloth, then add Qing Fen (Calomel) 2 qian and Long Nao powder 1 fen, mixing well. Re-seal with wax in a copper vessel. Apply a quantity the size of a sesame seed to the corner of the eye as needed, twice daily.
Formula for Huang Bo Gao (Phellodendron Bark Ointment) for instilling into eyes affected by wind-heat and excessive ocular discharge:
Huang Bo (Cortex Phellodendri, coarse bark removed, chopped) 1 liang; Rui Ren (Semen Pruni Persicae) 0.5 liang; Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae, from Qingzhou, three pieces, split).
The above three ingredients are placed together in a porcelain vessel with 3 sheng of water. Simmer over low heat until reduced to 1 sheng. Filter and collect the clear liquid. Store in a clean porcelain bottle. Instill into the eyes using copper tweezes, 3 to 5 times daily.
Formula for Huang Lian Gao (Coptis Ointment) for instilling into eyes with excessive ocular discharge:
Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, roots removed, powdered); Rui Ren (Semen Pruni Persicae, pounded) each 3 fen; Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, dried, powdered); Ni Fen (Calomel) 1 fen.
The above four ingredients, except Ni Fen, are soaked in 3 he of cow's milk overnight. Next morning, simmer over low heat until reduced to 1 he. Filter and collect the clear liquid. Add Ni Fen and mix well. Instill a quantity the size of a millet grain into the corner of the eye using copper tweezes, three times daily.
