It is stated that when the eyes are injured by external objects, mild cases involve swelling and pain of the eyelids due to impact; severe cases may result in protrusion of the eyeballs. As long as the eye tendons (connective tissues linking the eyeball to the orbit) remain intact, fresh Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shengdihuang, 生地黄) wrapped in cotton should be applied immediately for dressing. Simultaneously, Bifeng Gao (Wind-Repelling Ointment) should be massaged around the area to prevent external Wind from taking advantage of the breach. Internally, herbs that clear Heat, dispel Wind, calm fright, and relieve pain should be administered. If treatment is delayed, evil blood will coagulate and accumulate, with rotting stasis invading the eyeball, leading to the formation of nebulae (corneal opacities). In such cases, procedures such as hooking, cutting, moxibustion, and cauterization should be employed according to suitability.
