It is stated that the disease of phlegm-toxin stagnation in the Lung organ presents with symptoms such as dizziness and vertigo (Xuanmu Touxuan), chest and diaphragm stuffiness and fullness (Xiongge Piman), frequent expectoration of phlegm and saliva, loss of appetite, and a perception of fishy or foul odor in the nose. This is because the Lung governs Qi, resides above the diaphragm, and serves as the canopy (Huagai) for the five zang organs. When pathogenic heat stagnates and smolders over the chest and diaphragm, it interacts with body fluids (Jinye), leading to the formation of phlegm through constraint.
For treating lung heat stagnation, sore and swollen throat, heavy sensation in the head and eyes, irritability and thirst, external heat and phlegm-toxin, and constipation of both large and small intestines, use Ren Shen Fang Ji Tang (Ginseng and Stephania Decoction):
Ren Shen (Panax ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, half liang), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, one fen), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, rhizome removed), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen, crushed), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, twigs removed), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu).
The above thirteen ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of three qian bi, boiled with one sheng of water, three slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and one cun of Bai Cong (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), simmered until reduced to six parts. It may be taken at any time; strain and drink warm.
For treating phlegm-toxin stagnation in the Lung, use Liu Shen San (Six Deities Powder):
Ren Shen (Panax ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai He (Lilii Bulbus), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shan Yu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, black skin removed, each one liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, half liang).
The above six ingredients are pounded, sieved into powder. Each dose is two qian bi, taken with plain warm water, three times daily.
For treating lung heat with phlegm-solidity in the chest, unsmooth throat, and for resolving phlegm, use Xiao Shi Ban Xia Wan (Niter and Pinellia Pill):
Xiao Shi (Natrii Sulfas), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed seven times in hot water to remove slipperiness and dried, each half liang).
First, pound Ban Xia into powder, then add Xiao Shi and grind together until fine. Add one liang of Bai Mian (Tritici Vulgaris Fructus) and mix well. Sieve again, add drops of water to form pills the size of mung beans. Take twenty pills with Sheng Jiang Tang (Ginger Decoction).
For treating lung heat with phlegm-solidity stagnation, moistening the lungs, resolving phlegm, and benefiting the throat and diaphragm, use Gua Lou Tang (Trichosanthes Decoction):
Da Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus, five fruits, shell removed, pulp and seeds mashed finely, mixed with white flour to make cakes, dried, pounded and sieved, weighed three liang), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum).
Take Shan Yu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) and Gua Lou, stir-fry slowly in a silver or earthenware vessel until fragrant and cooked. Remove and mix with powders of Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum). Add three fen of Yan Hua (Halitum), grind finely and mix evenly. Take one qian per dose, dissolved in boiling water.
For treating lung heat cough with phlegm congestion, panting and restlessness, use Qian Hu Yin (Peucedani Decoction):
Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, rhizome removed, one and a half liang), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, heart removed), Bai Qian (Cynanchi Stauntonii Rhizoma et Radix, each one liang), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, heart removed and dried, one and a half liang), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, albedo removed, bran-fried, one liang).
The above eight ingredients are chopped like hemp seeds. Each dose is three qian bi, boiled with one sheng of water until reduced to seven parts. Strain and take warm after meals, twice daily.
For treating excessive heat in the Lung, sores on the face, stagnation in the chest, thick and sticky phlegm/saliva, or salivation during sleep, use Zi Su San (Perilla Leaf Powder):
Zi Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, fried), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, rhizome removed), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus, each one liang).
The above six ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose is three qian bi, boiled with one and a half sheng of water until reduced to one sheng. Strain and take warm, three times daily.
For treating lung excess and fullness, chest and heart oppression, cough with vexatious panting, phlegm stagnation in the throat and diaphragm, loss of appetite, and frequent constipation, use Run Chang Wan (Moisten Intestine Pill):
Sang Gen Bai Pi (Mori Cortex, chopped), Ting Li (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen, lightly fried between papers), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed and dried), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, albedo removed, bran-fried, each half liang), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen, crushed).
The above seven ingredients are pounded and sieved into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take twenty pills each time, swallowed with warm Ren Shen Tang (Ginseng Decoction), at any time.
For treating lung excess with phlegm-cough and constipation/stagnation, use Hei Shen Wan (Black Deity Pill):
Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, non-borer ones, one jin, cut into one-inch lengths, stir-fried in a pan until smoke ceases, then add the following four ingredients in order and stir-fry), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, tips removed), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma).
The above five ingredients are stir-fried together until black. Add one liang of Su (Butyrum) and mix evenly. Then add Ban Dou Shuang (Crotonis Semen Pulvis, half liang), sprinkle onto the medicine without stirring further. Immediately cover with a vessel to prevent smoke escape. Seal the four seams with wet paper. Once cool, place on the ground, spread evenly on paper, cover, and let stand overnight to eliminate fire toxicity. Pound and sieve into powder. Form pills with vinegar and wheat paste, the size of mung beans. Take three to five pills before bed, with Sheng Jiang Tang (Ginger Decoction), tea, or wine as desired.
For treating irregular Lung qi, phlegm stagnation in the upper diaphragm, panting and fullness with rapid breathing, and inability to speak, use Kuan Dong Hua Wan (Farfarae Flos Pill):
