Discussion: Regarding kidney deficiency and damage leading to bone flaccidity (Gu Wei, bone weakness) and emaciation, it is because bones are governed by the Kidney. If the Kidney is deficient and damaged, marrow will be exhausted and bones withered. Since Yang Qi is declining, the body loses nourishment. Consequently, bone flaccidity occurs, muscles and skin waste away, and the physique becomes emaciated. The Classics state: "Bones are the mansion of Marrow." If a patient cannot stand for long periods and trembles while walking, it indicates that the bones are about to fail; this is what is meant.
