Commentary states: Water-fluids (abnormal accumulation of fluids in the body) cannot be transported without ascending and descending movements, nor can they be resolved without Yang Qi. The cause of excessive salivation due to Kidney deficiency is that the Kidney storehouse lacks essence and Qi, Yang Qi is weak and minute, and Yin-cold coagulates and stagnates between the chest and diaphragm. Unable to resolve water-fluids, they overflow upwards to the teeth and gums, hence the preference for spitting saliva.
Formula for treating excessive phlegm and saliva caused by Kidney deficiency: Wuweizi Wan (Schisandra Pill)
Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Baifuling (Poria with Hostwood removed), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani, rhizome removed, each 1 liang), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum, soaked in hot water seven times, washed to remove slipperiness, then dried), Maimendong (Tuber Ophiopogonis Japonici, soaked in hot water, heart removed, then dried), Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni Officinalis, each half liang), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae, 3 fen).
The above seven herbs are crushed, sieved into powder, mixed with refined honey, and made into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, administered before meals with ginger decoction, twice daily.
