Discourse states: The chest is the mansion of Qi, and it is the pathway for respiration and the ascending and descending movements. If the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang follow the proper order, the Qi pathway will be smooth and regulated, and the chest will be in a state of harmony. However, if emotions such as joy and anger are unregulated, or cold and heat pathogens interfere, Qi will accumulate in the chest, resulting in Ge Qi (a syndrome characterized by obstruction in the chest and diaphragm). There are five types of Ge Qi: You Ge (Worry Ge), Hui Ge (Resentment Ge), Qi Ge (Qi Stagnation Ge), Han Ge (Cold Ge), and Re Ge (Heat Ge).
The symptoms of You Ge include: Qi knotting in the chest, causing vexation and oppression; unsmooth flow of body fluids; difficulty in swallowing food; emaciation and weakness.
The symptoms of Hui Ge include: a bitter sensation of fullness and solidity in the epigastrium; frequent dysphagia and acid regurgitation; indigestion; a stifling and rough sensation in the epigastrium; accumulation and knotting in the stomach; and difficulty in urination and defecation.
The symptoms of Qi Ge include: rebellious Qi causing fullness in the chest and hypochondrium; blockage in the throat; belching with a smell of food.
The symptoms of Han Ge include: abdominal distension and fullness; coughing and rebellious Qi; a bitter cold sensation above the diaphragm; borborygmus around the umbilicus and abdomen; and lack of hunger after eating.
The symptoms of Re Ge include: Heat Qi in the viscera; heat in the five centers (both palms, both soles, and the chest); oral ulcers; bone烦 (bone distress); heaviness in the four limbs; dry lips and mouth; occasional heat in the body, head, face, hands, and feet; pain in the lower back and back; Xiong Bi (chest bi) radiating to the back; inability to digest water and grain; inability to eat much; emaciation and shortness of breath. These are the manifestations of the five types of Ge Qi. Generally, the harmonious Qi of the human body can be damaged by worry, thought, resentment, anger, cold, heat, and improper diet, leading to disharmony of Yin and Yang and disease in the Zang-Fu organs. Qi becomes stagnant between the chest mansion, hence it is called Ge Qi. Various medical texts offer different discussions, and there is also the concept of Ten Ges with distinct symptoms. However, broadly speaking, their origins do not exceed the scope described above.
Discourse states: When the ascending, descending, exiting, and entering of Qi in the human chest and diaphragm encounter no obstruction, the person is called a "Ping Ren" (healthy person). If temperature regulation is inappropriate, resentment and anger occur irregularly, diet is unsuitable, or thoughts are endless, Yin and Yang will reject and isolate each other, causing stagnation and blockage in the chest and epigastrium. This is named Ge Qi. Although Worry, Resentment, Qi, Cold, and Heat are five different conditions, they are essentially the same type of Ge disease.
