Discourse states: Deficiency consumption with palpitations and fright is caused by insufficiency of Heart Qi and the retention of fluid-phlegm below the Heart. The Heart stores the Spirit (Shen) and governs the vessels. If damage to the blood vessels due to overexertion leads to insufficiency of Heart Qi, and this condition is then exploited by pathogenic factors, it causes the spirit to become frightened, startled, and restless. If fluid-retention occurs below the Heart, and the fluid-Qi assaults the Heart, it also leads to palpitations.
