It is stated that blood belongs to Ying (Nutritive Qi), and Qi belongs to Wei (Defensive Qi). They circulate through the Yin and Yang aspects, completing fifty cycles each day and night. The internal Zang-Fu organs and the external hundred bones and nine orifices all rely on this for nourishment. Moreover, women are of pure Yin constitution, taking blood as their root and Qi as their function. Above, it manifests as milk; below, as menstruation. If nurtured properly, Ying and Wei will flow smoothly without disorder; if regulated improperly, Qi and Blood will be out of phase and menstruation will not occur on time. The principles of health preservation must be carefully examined.

It is stated that any irregularity in menstruation may arise from wind-cold injuring the meridians, causing Qi and Blood to become stagnant due to cold and thus obstructed; or from the stagnation of Heart Qi, leading to the郁结 (depression and accumulation) of Qi and Blood, preventing their free circulation. These two conditions should be carefully diagnosed and treated.
