It is stated that blood and qi (vital energy) are the substances upon which the spirit (Shen) relies. The heart is the root of life and the hub of spiritual changes; its brilliance manifests in the face, and its nourishing function resides in the blood vessels. To maintain a youthful appearance through herbal medicine, one must prioritize tonifying blood and qi. If this principle is ignored and one merely resorts to superficial methods such as applying cosmetics or dyeing beard hair, one deviates far from the true path of health preservation.
