Discourse states: The disease of zhangyi (membranous opacity obstructing vision) originates from wind-heat toxic qi, which accumulates in the Zang-Fu organs and rushes upward to affect the eyes, condensing and binding to form the condition. Since the eyes are the manifestation of the essence of the five Zang organs and the external indicator of the Liver, when wind-pathogen and toxic heat reside within the Zang-Fu and cannot be vented, they rush upward into the eyes, thus causing zhangyi. Initially, there is a sensation of grittiness, redness, and pain; gradually, membranous opacity forms and obstructs vision. If it persists for a long time without receding, or even adheres to the eyeball, it is difficult to cure with treatment. This is referred to as chronic zhangyi (long-standing visual obstruction).
To treat internal and external zhangyi, regardless of duration, and all eye diseases, Cishi Wan (Magnetite Pill) formula:
Cishi (Magnetite, 3 liang, calcined red, quenched ten times in vinegar, ground fine, refined, and dried) Niuxi (Achyranthes Root, remove sprouts, soak overnight in bean dregs water, then decoct five boils in unadulterated wine, dry) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, remove rough bark) Baiziren (Biota Seed, grind separately, wrap in paper, press to remove oil) Bajitian (Morinda Root, remove heart, decoct five to seven boils in unadulterated wine, bake dry) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, remove forked ends) Fupenzi (Raspberry, remove stems and leaves) Yuanzhi (Polygala Root, remove heart) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, processed) Digupi (Lycium Bark) Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root, processed until cracked, remove skin and umbilical scar) Huangqi (Astragalus Root, sliced, each 1 liang) BaiFuling (Poria, remove black skin, 1.5 liang) Lurong (Deer Antler, select soft parts, decoct in wine for over ten boils, remove hair, bake dry, 2 liang) Roushoucong (Cistanche Stem, 3 liang, soak in unadulterated wine for two days, bake) Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root, fresh, baked dry, 2 liang)
The above sixteen ingredients are crushed and ground into powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, on an empty stomach with warm wine or salted water. Dosage may be increased to 30 pills.
To treat ganfeng (nutritional deficiency wind) suffered since childhood that attacks the eyes causing opacity, persisting despite long-term treatment, where any membranous opacity obstructs vision provided the eyeball itself is not damaged, Bijin San (Secret Gold Powder) formula:
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, remove roots) Shashen (Adenophora Root) Taiyin Xuanjingshi (Calcined Gypsum/Mineral Salt, ground) Juemingzi (Cassia Seed, each 1 liang)
The above four ingredients are crushed and ground into powder. Take half a qianbi (measure) per dose. Take one lamb liver, slit it with a bamboo knife, insert the powder inside, tie with thread, place in a jar, cook thoroughly in rice washing water. Divide into three doses, consume plain.
To treat long-standing wind-toxin where qi attacks the eyes causing dimness, redness, and grittiness, proliferating flesh forming sores, membranous opacity obscuring vision, long-standing unilateral or bilateral headache, eyes gradually appearing smaller, and brain-clamping wind pain with many black spots seen in vision, Qianghuo Wan (Notopterygium Pill) formula:
Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome, remove rhizome head) Tiannanxing (Arisaema Tuber, processed) Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome) Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root, processed until cracked, remove skin and umbilical scar) Xuanjinhua (Inula Flower) Xiong (Angelica Root) QingjuPi (Green Tangerine Peel, soak in hot water, remove white pith, bake dry) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, wash ten times in hot water) Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg Case, stir-fried, each 1 liang) Qianniuzi (Pharbitis Seed, 6 liang, lightly stir-fried, crush to take 2 liang of powder) Bencao/Ligusticum (Ligusticum Rhizome, remove sprouts and soil, 1 liang)
The above eleven ingredients are crushed and sifted into fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose after meals with warm water, gradually increasing to 30 pills.
For eye zhangyi persisting for years without cure, apply Shidan San (Chalcanthite Powder) for instillation:
Shidan (Chalcanthite, 0.5 fen) Hupo (Amber, 1 fen) Zhenzhumo (Pearl Powder, 1 fen) Shanhu (Coral, 1 fen) ZiBei (Purple Shell, 1 fen) MaKe (Mother-of-Pearl, 1 fen) Zhusha (Cinnabar, 0.5 liang) Ruiren (Buckthorn Seed, 0.5 liang, soak in hot water, remove red skin) Juemingzi (Cassia Seed, 1 fen)
The above nine ingredients are crushed and sifted into powder, then further ground in a mortar until uniform and fine. Apply a amount the size of a small bean to the eye, two to three times daily, which is excellent.
For eye redness, pain, and opacity causing distant blurriness, itching, and grittiness, apply Shanhu San (Coral Powder) for instillation:
Shanhu (Coral, 3 fen) Longnao (Borneol, 0.5 qian) Zhusha (Cinnabar, 2 fen)
First grind Shanhu and Zhusha into powder, then add Longnao and grind uniformly. Take a grain-sized amount with chopsticks, instill into the eye three to four times daily.
For mental fatigue and labor causing bilateral eye membranous opacity, long-term dimness, swelling, redness, pain, excessive tearing, and blurred vision, Mengling Wan (Dream Spirit Pill) formula:
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, remove roots) Taiyin Xuanjingshi (Calcined Gypsum/Mineral Salt, each 1 liang, ground) Yanggan (Lamb Liver, 7 pieces, remove membrane, slice thinly, dry) Shijueming (Abalone Shell, 1 liang, wash, crush separately into powder, grind) Ruiren (Buckthorn Seed, 4 liang, remove skin, take 1 liang, grind finely, use raw)
The above five ingredients are crushed and ground into powder, formed into pills the size of paulownia seeds using millet porridge paste. Take 20 pills before bed with tea water. For thick membranes, no more than one month is needed; for recent cases, no more than ten doses.
For adherent eye opacity, Qinpi Wan (Fraxinus Bark Pill) formula:
Qinpi (Fraxinus Bark, remove rough bark) Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, remove rough bark, roast) Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, remove black center) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, remove forked ends) Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, remove sprouts) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, remove roots, each 1 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Weirui (Polygonatum Rhizome) Mutong (Akebia Stem, sliced, each 1.5 liang)
The above nine ingredients are sliced, baked, crushed, and sifted into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose after meals and before bed with warm water.
For chronic wind-eye and congenital red-eye, where opacity invades the cornea causing blindness, apply Huanglian Jian (Coptis Decoction) for instillation:
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, remove roots) Zengqing (Azurite/Malachite, grind to powder) Digubai Pi (Lycium Root Bark, each 1 liang) Keyan (Rock Salt, 1 fen) Guqian (Ancient Coins, 10 coins) Mi (Honey, 1 sheng)
Crush the above six ingredients, soak in honey, place in a new porcelain jar, boil in a double boiler for one shichen (two hours). Remove, filter through cotton to remove dregs, put back in the jar, leave outdoors overnight exposed to rain and dew. Take a small amount with chopsticks, instill into the eye three to five times daily.
For eye zhangyi, take Ruiren San (Buckthorn Powder):
Ruiren (Buckthorn Seed, 3 fen) Juemingzi (Cassia Seed, 3 fen) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, 1 liang, remove roots) Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, 1 liang, remove sprouts) Weirui (Polygonatum Rhizome, 1 liang) Chuan Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, 3 fen, sliced, lightly stir-fried) Huangqi (Astragalus Root, 1 liang, sliced) Gancao (Licorice Root, 0.5 liang, roasted, slightly reddened, sliced)
Crush the above eight ingredients into coarse powder. Take 3 qianbi per dose with one cup of water, decoct to 0.6 cups, remove dregs, and take warm after meals.
For chronic eye opacity not healing, apply Beichi San (Conch Tooth Powder) for instillation:
Beichi (Conch Tooth, 1 fen) Hupo (Amber, 1 fen) Zhusha (Cinnabar, 0.5 liang) Longnao (Borneol, 0.5 fen) Mayaxiao (Mirabilite, 3 fen)
Grind the above five ingredients finely into powder. Apply a small amount to the eye.
For eye opacity causing dimness, affecting adults and children, with gritty, swollen, red eyes and hidden pain, apply Ruiren Jian (Buckthorn Decoction):
Ruiren (Buckthorn Seed, remove skin and tip, line bottom of silver bowl) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, remove roots, wash clean, line on top of Ruiren, each 2 liang)
Place 49 ancient copper coins on top of the Huanglian. Soak in two cups of well water, ensuring water level does not exceed the coins. Use 4 liang of aged mugwort (seven years old), tightly packed into one moxa cone. Burn the moxa on the coins, cover the bowl tightly to prevent smoke escape. After burning, remove ash, coins, Huanglian, and Ruiren. Collect the moxa smoke dissolved in water. Add 2 liang of white honey, decoct together to one cup, remove dregs. Then mix with:
Shexiang (Musk) Longnao (Borneol, each 2 fen) Pengsha (Borax, 1 zi)
Grind these three ingredients finely into a paste, reheat, seal tightly, and immerse in well water for seven days to remove fire toxicity. When treating opacity, first wash eyes with plain boiled water, then instill medicine using a rush light wick, three times daily. Avoid wind exposure.
For all chronic eye opacities, proliferating flesh (pterygium), redness, swelling, and pain, apply Jueming San (Cassia Powder):
Shijueming (Abalone Shell) Cao Jueming (Cassia Seed) Qingxiangzi (Celosia Seed) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted and sliced) Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, remove rough bark) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, remove roots) Gujingcao (Eriocaulon Flower) Longgu (Fossilized Bones) Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, bran-fried) Muli (Oyster Shell, calcined) Gouqizi (Goji Berry) Shetui (Snake Slough, each 1 liang) Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome, remove rhizome head) Jili (Tribulus Fruit, stir-fried, remove spines) Chantui (Cicada Slough) Baifuzi (Typhonium Rhizome, processed) Huangqi (Astragalus Root, sliced, each 0.5 liang) Yuzi (Fish Roe, from live water, 0.5 liang, washed gently in warm sulfur water) Hu Jing (Tiger Eye, one piece, sliced into seven, dried over gentle heat, one slice ground into powder per batch)
The above twenty ingredients are crushed and sifted into powder. Take 3 qianbi per dose at dawn mixed with aged tea liquor, and again at noon and before bed. For proliferating flesh with unbearable redness, swelling, and pain, improvement is seen in three to five days. For long-standing red-white opacity, reduction occurs in seven days, and the eye returns to normal peace in fourteen days. Cases with dead eye roots are untreatable; living eyes are universally treated. Eyes that hurt due to emotional distress, alcohol, sexual excess, or wind/rain exposure are "living eyes." Eyes with no tears and no pain are "dead eyes" and require no further treatment.
For eye dimness and internal/external opacity causing blindness, apply Huanjing Shenming Jiu (Eye-Rejuvenating Divine Wine):
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, remove roots, 5 liang) Shijueming (Abalone Shell) Cao Jueming (Cassia Seed) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) Shigao (Gypsum) Huang Xiaoshi (Yellow Niter) Ruiren (Buckthorn Seed) Qinpi (Fraxinus Bark) Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit) Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, remove black center) Shashen (Adenophora Root) Puxiao (Mirabilite) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Shaoyao (Peony Root) Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, remove rough bark) Qizi (Shepherd's Purse Seed) Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed) Dan Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf) Baiziren (Biota Seed) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, remove forked ends) Wutou (Aconite Root, remove skin and umbilical scar) Xinyi (Magnolia Bud) Renshen (Ginseng) Xiong (Angelica Root) Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) Qumai Sui (Persicaria Spike) Taoren (Peach Seed, remove skin and tip, stir-fry double-kernel ones) Xixin (Asarum Root, remove sprouts and leaves) Difuzi (Kochia Fruit, each 3 liang) Longnao (Borneol, 3 qian) Dingxiang (Clove, 2 qian) Zhenzhu (Pearl, 25 pieces, poreless)
Chop the above thirty-four ingredients, place in a silk bag, and soak in 5 dou of good wine in a jar. Soak for seven days in spring/summer, fourteen days in autumn/winter. Take 0.5 he after meals. Do not drink to intoxication/vomiting; increase dosage gradually. After one hundred days, vision will return to normal. Only cases with destroyed/cracked eyeballs are untreatable; if the sclera and cornea are intact, this medicine can regenerate vision and restore the pupil to its original state.
For eye membranous opacity persisting long-term, apply Tingli Shi San (Descurainia Seed Powder):
Tingli Shi (Descurainia Seed, shell removed by grinding with willow wood tool, yellow flesh sifted through horsehair sieve, burnt shells discarded. From 10 liang, 4 liang of pure flesh is obtained; willow wood is necessary for shell removal)
Grind the single ingredient into powder. Slice pig liver thinly, coat with powder, and roast slowly over low heat until cooked. Form into powder. Take 2 qianbi before bed mixed with aged rice water. Alternatively, make pills with strong vinegar, take 20 pills per dose. Or, take the inner sac of Tingli Shi, steam once, dry, and grind into powder. Use as powder or honey pills, taken with warm water.
