Discourse states: Cholera with muscle cramps (Huoluan Zhuanjin) arises from wind-cold pathogens injuring the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), transmitting to the Spleen and Stomach. Upon receiving cold, Yang Qi fails to circulate freely, causing the meridians and collaterals of the limbs to fail in relaxing and extending. This is fundamentally due to deficiency in the Middle and Lower Jiao. The manifestations include dizziness, chest oppression, restlessness, spasms and knotting of the calf tendons, tightness and pain in the muscles, and upward retraction of the limbs. This is attributed to the deficiency of the Foot-Yangming Meridian and the coldness of the Foot-Taiyang Meridian. However, the branch of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian originates from the lower opening of the Stomach, runs along the interior of the abdomen to converge at the Qichong (ST30) point, then descends through the Bituan (ST31) point, reaches the Futu (ST32) point, and enters below the patella. It then descends along the lateral margin of the thigh. The Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian runs along the posterior lateral margin of the thigh, converges below in the popliteal fossa, and penetrates downwards into the medial aspect of the buttock. When these meridians are disturbed, pathology manifests as inability to rotate the thigh, a sensation in the popliteal fossa like being bound by a knot, or like being torn apart. Treatment should regulate the Stomach Fu organ and warm the Bladder Meridian. In this way, urine flow will be promoted, cold will descend and dissipate, the Stomach Fu will become warm, cholera can be cured, and the disease of muscle cramps will have no basis to arise.
