Commentary states: Wind pathogen invades the human body due to deficiency in the fu and zang organs and insufficiency of Heart Qi. The human body relies on Qi and Blood, Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) as righteous energy (Zheng Qi), while external wind qi acts as pathogenic factor (Xie Qi). When the fu and zang organs are deficient and Heart Qi is insufficient, wind pathogen takes advantage of the deficiency to interfere with the organism. The classics state that there are five types of pathogenic factors causing disease, among which Zhong Feng (Wind Stroke/Attack by Wind) is one; this refers to such a situation. It is also said: Wind pathogen moves swiftly and changes frequently, so its onset is often unnoticed. Its manifestations include mania, confusion, delirious speech, and excessive sadness or joy without restraint.
