[Discussion] Wind-dampness and toxic factors invading the human body mostly start from the lower part, with the feet being affected first; hence it is named Hong Kong Foot (Hongxiangjiao, a term for beriberi or gout-like swelling of the feet). The toxic factors follow the meridians upward into the Lung, causing the airway to be rushed and forced, with ascending and descending functions failing to proceed smoothly, thus leading to upper asthma (Shangchuan) and chest fullness.
Banxia Decoction (Pinellia Decoction) for treating Hong Kong Foot where Qi rushes into the abdomen, causing abdominal urgency, Qi rebelling to the chest and diaphragm, and true Qi about to perish:
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 2 liang, washed in hot water to remove slipperiness, stir-fried until yellow) Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 liang, removed coarse bark) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum, 1 liang, processed) Shuqi (Polygalae Radix, 1.5 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and crushed) Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed, 0.5 liang each)
The above seven herbs are crushed like hemp seeds. Each dose is 3 qian bi, boiled with 1 zhan of water until reduced to 6 fen. Strain the dregs and take warm on an empty stomach, once at noon and once in the evening. If the initial dose feels too strong, fearing Qi may rise instead of descending, reduce the dosage.
