Jinxing Shi (Venus Stone): Cold in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats toxicity and stagnation in the Spleen and Lungs, as well as lung damage causing hemoptysis (coughing up blood) and hematemesis (vomiting blood). It guides out hot blood and hot phlegm, and resolves various toxins. Produced in Bingzhou and other regions.
Yinxing Shi (Silver Star Stone): Its therapeutic effects are generally similar to those of Jinxing Shi. Harvested at any time.
[Unnamed Mineral]: Astringent in taste, neutral in nature. Primarily treats metal wounds (metal injuries), stops bleeding, and also treats postpartum blood syncope and evil blood (stagnant blood) in women. Produced in Shanzhou, Huazhou, and other commanderies; it is bright yellow in color and has a fixed square shape of varying sizes. To prepare for use, it should be heated red-hot in a strong fire. For metal wounds, it stops bleeding effectively; scraping off the powder and applying it externally promotes healing without suppuration or ulceration. Ancient formulas did not use this herb; recently, it is often ground together with Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) into a powder and applied to metal wounds with miraculous effect. In cases of sudden knife or blade injuries where mixing other substances is impossible, simply scraping fine powder from the stone and applying it directly is also effective. Harvested at any time.
Qingmeng Shi (Blue Meng Stone): Treats food stagnation that fails to digest and remains stagnant in the Zang-Fu organs, chronic food masses that do not heal for a long time, as well as emaciation in children due to food stagnation, and years-long food masses in women. It works well when combined with Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit), Croton Seed (Badou, 巴豆), Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄), and Curcuma Longa Root (Jingsanleng, 京三棱). It can be made into pills for oral administration; when used, it must be finely ground into powder. Also known as Qingmeng Shi.
[Unnamed Mineral]: Neutral in nature. Treats visual obstructions (cataracts/opacities), improves vision, and treats wind-heat red eyes; it should be soaked in saline solution before use. It also treats difficult labor (transverse presentation), heart and abdominal pain, and five types of strangury (Wulin, 五淋). When used, it should be quenched in vinegar.
[Unnamed Mineral]: Primarily treats heart pain, zhu-wu (infectious disease or spirit-induced ailments), lithiasis strangury (stone strangury), difficult labor, and infantile convulsions. Boil in water, grind, and take the juice. Produced in Lingnan region; it is said to be found inside snakes, round like a tin pellet, with mixed colors of yellow, black, and green. Ri Hua Zi states: Cold in nature, non-toxic. If used in medicine, heat it red-hot three or four times, quench in vinegar, fly-grind, and use. The "Bencao Tujing" states: What physicians currently use is large as a bullet, hard as stone, yellow on the outside and black on the inside, harvested in February. It is said to be the earth contained by snakes during winter hibernation, which they vomit out in spring when emerging from hibernation.
Peng Sha (Borax): Bitter and acrid in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Eliminates phlegm, stops coughing, breaks up mass formations, treats throat obstruction (bi-syndrome), and is also used for soldering gold and silver. Sometimes called Peng Sha. The "Bencao Tujing" states: Produced by the sea. Warm and neutral in nature. Currently, physicians consider it most essential for treating throat diseases. Its form consists of blocks that are very smooth and lustrous.
Huang Jing (Polygonatum Rhizome): Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Primarily tonifies the Middle Jiao, boosts Qi, dispels wind-dampness, calms the Five Zang organs, and with long-term use, lightens the body. The "Yaoxing Lun" states: It serves as the Sovereign (Jun, 君) herb. Ri Hua Zi states: Tonifies the five labors and seven injuries, assists the sinews and bones, relieves hunger, withstands cold and heat, benefits the Spleen and Stomach, and moistens the Heart. The "Shenxian Zhicao Jing" states: Enriches the Middle Jiao and boosts Qi, harmonizes the Five Zang organs, makes muscles full and robust, strengthens bones and body, and doubles its efficacy. Harvested in February, dried in the shade. Found everywhere, but those produced in Maoshan are the best.
