The above fifteen ingredients are chopped, soaked in fifteen dou and five sheng of flowing water from the east for half a day, then decocted using reed shoots stored for three years, obtaining four sheng of liquid. Add sugar and boil again for several boils. Take one sheng per dose. For those under twenty or over sixty years old, take seven or eight he. Even for those in their prime but chronically emaciated, take seven or eight he. Administer three times daily and once at night. Otherwise, the medicinal power will not be continuous, and the disease cannot be cured. It is essential to use labor water (water carried by human effort) and aged reed shoots; otherwise, the strong water and fierce fire will prevent the medicinal efficacy from being extracted. In the early Zhenguan era, a patient suffered from extreme emaciation nearing death. I prescribed this formula once, and he recovered immediately. The effect was like hot water pouring on snow, melting it instantly; therefore, I recorded it.
Treatment for men suffering from the five labors and six extremes. If the Heart is injured, it causes easy fright, irrational anger, and emotional instability. If the Spleen is injured, it causes abdominal fullness, frequent belching, desire to lie down after eating, and sallow complexion. If the Lungs are injured, it causes essence deficiency, backache, and cold extremities. If the Liver is injured, it causes blood deficiency and dark complexion. If the Kidneys are injured, it causes accumulations, fullness and bi-syndrome in the lower abdomen and back, coughing and spitting, and difficult urination. These diseases arising from the six extremes all originate from excessive labor leading to deficient pulses, external contraction of wind pathogens, and internal invasion of cold and heat. This causes pain in the hands and feet, coldness below the knees, borborygmus in the abdomen, frequent diarrhea and dysentery, or alternation between constipation and diarrhea, edema of the face and eyes, mental confusion and restlessness, reluctance to speak, and aversion to human voices.
