(Methods for Jiajian [Tortoise Shell Lip Balm] include two types, twenty prescriptions, and two moxibustion methods.)
Prescription for treating dry, scorched, and unmoistened lips due to Spleen Heat.
Sheng Dihuang Zhi (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix Juice, 1 sheng) Sheng Maidong (Fresh Ophiopogonis Radix, 4 liang) Sheng Tianmendong (Fresh Asparagi Radix, cut, 1 sheng) Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 4 liang) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 2 liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (each 3 liang) Zhugao (Pork Fat, 3 sheng)
The above eleven ingredients are chopped. The medicinal herbs are soaked in Kujiu (sour wine/vinegar) overnight. Wrap the herbs in cotton gauze. When ready to decoct, add the fresh Rehmanniae Radix juice. Decoct together with the pork fat until the balm sizzles and all moisture has evaporated. Remove the dregs. Take a small amount and hold it gently in the mouth.
Prescription for treating cracked lips and halitosis.
First, grind Sesame seeds into a paste. Use this paste to seal the mouths of two fine porcelain bottles, each with a capacity of over one dou. Apply the paste half an cun thick and sun-dry until hard.
Gansongxiang (Nardostachyos Radix et Rhizoma, 5 liang) Ainaxiang (Agarwood oil/essential oil variant, 1 liang) Muxuxiang (Medicago sativa seed/flower, 1 liang) Maoxiang (Andropogonis Gerardii Rhizoma, 1 liang) Huoxiang (Pogostemonis Herba, 3 liang) Linglingxiang (Lingzhi's fragrant root, 4 liang)
The above six aromatic herbs are first washed clean by making a decoction with one sheng of wine and five sheng of water. After washing, chop them. Then soak them overnight in one sheng of wine and one sheng of water. On the next morning, place them into one dou and five sheng of Wuma You (Black Sesame Oil). Simmer over low heat, performing "three ups and three downs" (heating and cooling cycles). Strain out the dregs. Pour the infused oil into one of the prepared porcelain bottles, leaving some space at the top. Then take:
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 1 liang) Shexiang (Moschus, 1 liang) Jiaxiang (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum processed for fragrance, 1 liang)
The above eight ingredients (including the previous six plus these three) are first washed clean using a mixture of water and wine. Each is crushed separately, not necessarily into a fine powder. Mix with two sheng of honey and one sheng of wine. Place this mixture into the prepared porcelain bottle until full. Cover the bottle mouth with cotton gauze and secure it with crossed bamboo strips to prevent aroma leakage. Dig a pit in the ground and bury the oil bottle so that its mouth is level with the ground. Invert the aromatic bottle onto the oil bottle so their mouths align. Seal the junction between the two bottle mouths tightly with the sesame paste, about half an cun thick. Pile chaff (rice husks) around the bottles to a height of five cun. Ignite the chaff and burn for three days and nights without letting the fire go out. Add more chaff as needed. Once twelve shi of chaff have been consumed, stop burning. Let it cool for three days before retrieving.
Separately, refine eight jin of beeswax. Boil it several times, then add twelve liang of Zicao (Gardeniae Radix processed for color, or Lithospermi Radix - note: context suggests dye herb, likely Lithospermi Radix/Zicao). Boil for dozens of boils. Test by rubbing a stem on a fingernail; when the core turns white, remove it. Filter through cotton gauze and mix with the previously prepared infusion. Stir well. Then add six liang of Zhusha Fen (Cinnabar Powder) and stir until uniform. While still slightly warm but not yet solidified, pour into a bamboo tube wrapped in paper and bound with hemp. Wait for it to solidify and cool, then unwrap. Use as desired. This yields fifty sticks.
Jiajian Kouzhi (Tortoise Shell Lip Balm), for treating pale, bloodless lips and halitosis.
Method for Burning Incense (for lip balm base)
Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) Jiaxiang (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) Shexiang (Moschus) Tanxiang (Santalum Album Lignum) Suhexiang (Styrax) Xunluxiang (Boswelliae Resina) Linglingxiang (Lingzhi's fragrant root) Baijiaoxiang (Liquidambaris Resina) Huoxiang (Pogostemonis Herba) Gansongxiang (Nardostachyos Radix et Rhizoma) Zelan (Agastaches Herba)
Twelve ingredients, each six liang. Five sheng of Huma You (Sesame Oil). First, heat the oil until hot. Add Baijiaoxiang, Huoxiang, Gansongxiang, and Zelan. Remove from heat shortly after. Filter through cotton gauze into a porcelain bottle. The remaining eight aromatic herbs are pounded into powder, mixed with honey (not too wet), and placed in a small porcelain bottle until full. Cover the mouth with cotton gauze and bind with a cross-pattern of bamboo strips. Place the small bottle upside down inside the large bottle containing the oil. Seal the junction tightly with mud. Bury the oil bottle in the ground with the mouth level with the earth. Burn dried cow dung underneath. Seven days and nights are sufficient; twelve days are better. Retrieve after cooling. The bottles must be coated uniformly with mature mud, one cun thick, and sun-dried before use. (Another method uses chaff for burning.)
Method for Refining Beeswax and Combining Jiajian
La (Beeswax, 2 liang) Zicao (Lithospermi Radix, 2 liang)
First, melt the beeswax. Add Zicao and boil. Check periodically by rubbing Zicao on a fingernail; when the center turns white, remove it. Add the melted wax to the Zicao extract. Do not let it solidify. Pour the prepared Jiajian into the wax, stir evenly, and pour into tubes. Do not disturb. Once cooled and solidified, retrieve. This makes good lip balm. Apply to lips and face three times daily.
