(One Treatise, Ten Formulas)
Treatise says: Malady of Great Wind (Leprosy/Hansen's disease) presents in various different manifestations. In the early stage, although the whole body appears normal, the eyebrows and hair have already fallen out. Some patients have severely damaged skin and flesh all over the body, yet their eyebrows and beard remain intact. Some appear identical to healthy people everywhere, but have insensate patches on the limbs, abdomen, and back; in severe cases, the ten fingers of the hands and feet have already fallen off. Some patients feel extreme cold and do not feel warm even when wearing heavy clothes; others frequently feel heat and cannot find temporary relief. Some bodies are withered and emaciated, some have constant unceasing discharge of fluids or sweat, some experience dryness and itching penetrating to the bone, where scratching causes white scales like bran to fall off, followed immediately by ulceration under the hand. (The *Waitai Miyao* reads "suddenly no ulceration forms"). Some have toxic ulcers overlapping and growing, suffering ceaseless pain day and night; others present directly with insensate limbs, devoid of sensation or itch. The complexion also varies, including blue, yellow, red, white, black, lustrous, and dull. Although these symptoms manifest differently, whether the disease is difficult or easy to treat depends entirely on the patient's compliance with the physician. Why? Once contracted, regardless of wisdom or folly, communication is difficult because the patient verbally agrees but internally disobeys, refusing medical advice, relying solely on the power of medicine without seeking self-cultivation. Thus, difficulty or ease of treatment lies with the patient, not with medicine. I have personally treated over six hundred patients, only one-tenth recovered. None were treated without my personal, meticulous care, which is why I understand this disease thoroughly. If a patient is difficult to communicate with and rejects advice, there is no need to continue treatment, as it will ultimately cause harm; the disease will not heal, resulting in futile effort. Furthermore, according to the *Biographies of Immortals*, dozens of individuals achieved immortality due to contracting this malady. Why? Because they severed worldly attachments and harbored the spirit of Yingyang (referring to Xu You, a symbol of reclusive purity). Thus, they not only cured the disease but turned misfortune into fortune. Among the patients I have observed, many were scholars and officials, even famous persons. Upon encountering this affliction, they clung to their wives and children, unable to sever emotional ties, relying solely on medicinal power and unwilling to reflect upon themselves. If they could cut off desires and abandon preferences, not only would the illness heal, but they could potentially attain immortality through this process. I once asked the patients, and they all claimed they had engaged in unrighteous acts, gradually becoming involved in base occupations, yet still wished to continue. They had words of repentance but no sincere heart. If they could renew themselves, accept the teacher's instructions, consume food and medicine, how could they fail to recover? During the Zhenguan era, I took a patient into the mountains and instructed him to take *Pini Resina* (Pine Resin). After taking it for one hundred days, his beard and eyebrows grew back. From this, we see that one must seek healing within oneself and cannot rely entirely on medicine. However, some suffer from limb numbness and paralysis for years, ashamed to show their faces to wives and children, hiding the truth. Later, when the disease manifests clearly, they claim it was caused suddenly by medication. This is self-deception. Although this disease is severe, if treated at its subtle/early stage, it can be healed immediately. Once contracted, death occurs within ten years at the earliest, or five to six years at the shortest. Yet patients believe they will live to a hundred years old, which is deeply pitiable. Upon contracting this disease, one must abstain from salt, regularly consume Pine Resin, and abandon all public and private affairs as easily as removing shoes. All dietary flavors must be eliminated, gradually leading to grain-abstinence (*Bigu*), avoiding secular matters, cutting off social celebrations and condolences, dwelling in secluded valleys, and healing after one year. After recovery, one must strictly avoid sexual activity for life; violation leads to relapse. This disease has two aspects: auspicious and inauspicious. Practicing virtue after contraction brings good fortune; behaving like ordinary indulgent people brings disaster. Now, I briefly describe the causes to instruct future learners, who may read and reflect.
Formula for Treating Malady of Great Wind with Beans:
Use fine-grained black soybeans (*Glycine max*). Select those whose skins do not rub off. Take the seedlings and roots of *Tianxiong Wutou* (Aconitum carmichaelii deoxyaconitine root tuber variety) harvested in the third and fourth lunar months. Cleanse thoroughly to remove soil but do not wash. Crush and press to extract juice. Soak the beans overnight, drain, and sun-dry. Repeat this process seven times before consumption. Initially take three beans, gradually increasing to six or seven beans, taken once daily. Abstain from sexual intercourse and pork...
