(One Treatise)
The treatise states: The pharyngeal gate is the pathway through which the divine Qi and Yin-Yang of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs circulate, determining their patency or obstruction. The throat envelops the tongue and is the root of fluids harmonizing the qi of the five flavors; this must be studied carefully. The pharyngeal gate is the external manifestation of the Liver and Gallbladder, governing the circulation of fluids and divine Qi of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, corresponding to the twelve double-hours. If the Zang organs are hot, the pharyngeal gate closes and Qi becomes obstructed; if the Fu organs are cold, the pharyngeal gate ruptures and the voice becomes hoarse. Mu Jiang Jiu [Mother Ginger Wine] is used to treat this. (See Formula in Volume 6, Throat Diseases Section.) Heat is treated by promoting flow; Cold is treated by tonification. If Cold and Heat are harmonized, disease will not arise.
(One Treatise, Two Formulas)
The treatise states: In Marrow Deficiency, there is headache and restlessness; in Marrow Excess, there is courage and ferocity. Generally, the deficiency or excess of Marrow is governed by the Liver and Gallbladder. If the Zang and Fu organs have disease, the disease arises from the Marrow; Heat corresponds to the Zang, and Cold corresponds to the Fu.
