Chapter: Qiesuo Wanbing Wan (Qiesuo's Pill for Ten Thousand Diseases)
Category: Formula
Treats seven types of *pi* masses (abdominal masses that are palpable and fixed), five types of *dian* disease (mental disorders characterized by silence, dementia, incoherent speech, and quietness with excessive joy). Ten types of *zhu-wu* diseases (infectious conditions with a prolonged course), seven types of *fei-shi* (acute infectious diseases with rapid onset, wandering nature, and high mortality), twelve types of *gu* poison (poisoning diseases caused by insect toxins or evil qi), five types of *huang* disease (diseases primarily manifested by yellowing of the face, eyes, and body), twelve-hour malaria (malaria occurring at different times of the day),
ten types of water diseases (edema-related diseases), eight types of severe wind diseases (severe wind-pathogen diseases such as leprosy), twelve types of *bi* syndrome (pain and numbness caused by blockage of meridians), as well as wind pathogen invading the head and eyes causing blurred and dim vision, along with upward rebellious Qi and cough, rattling phlegm sound in the throat like a water chicken, inability to sleep or lie down, reduced food intake leading to emaciated skin and muscles, stagnation of Qi in the five Zang organs, accumulation not resolving, obstruction and blockage, abdominal distension and fullness, and extending to the chest and back with鼓胀 (distension) and hard Qi knots flowing into the four limbs. Or again, there is Qi fullness in the diaphragm occurring regularly, lasting ten or twenty years without healing. Five types of dysentery accompanied by *gan* parasites, *cunbai* worms (tapeworms), and various other parasites; upper and lower cold-heat imbalance;
long-standing retention of phlegm-fluids causing excessive sleepiness, emaciation and weakness, pathogenic factors penetrating into the bone marrow forming stasis, suffering from Qi edema of the body, vomiting and rebellious food intake, soreness and pain in the waist and legs, heaviness in the four limbs, inability to stand or walk for long periods. For women, due to cold entering the uterus after childbirth, impurity in the uterus, or blockage and obstruction, blood stasis in the womb, cold-damp stagnation with incomplete discharge, frequent pain and suffering, or consequently leading to infertility, as well as infantile red-and-white dysentery, also fox odor, deafness, nasal congestion, and other diseases. This medicine takes three pills as one dose. Taking no more than three doses, all ten thousand diseases are eliminated. The explanations are endless, hence it is called Wanbing Wan (Pill for Ten Thousand Diseases).
Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Shexiang (Moschus), Xijiao (Rhino Horn), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori), Fuling (Poria), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Gansui (Radix Kansui), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Shujiao (Fructus Schisandrae), Xixin (Herba Asari), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Badou (Semen Crotonis), Qianhu (Radium Peucedani), Ziwan (Radix Asteris), Puhuang (Pollinis Typhae), Tingli (Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Xionghuang (Realgar), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Daji (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae), Yuyuliang (Lapis Haematitae).
The above thirty-one medicinal materials (Cui Shi's version lacks Huangqin, Sangbaipi, Jiegeng, and Fangfeng, totaling twenty-seven materials), all required to be finely ground. Niuhuang, Shexiang, Xijiao, Zhusha, Xionghuang, Yuyuliang, and Badou are separately ground fine. The remaining materials are combined and pounded. Sift through double-layer silk gauze. Mix with white honey, pound another three thousand strokes, seal tightly. On the day of opening, take three pills on an empty stomach in the morning with wine. Pills should be the size of Sophora seeds (*Wuzi*). It is ideal if three sheng (approx. 600ml) of foul water is discharged. If it is a sudden acute disease, administration is not restricted to morning or evening; however, it must reach the degree of vomiting and diarrhea. If there is no vomiting or diarrhea, add one pill, or increase to three or five pills, until vomiting and diarrhea occur. Do not limit the number of pills. If the disease is strong and the medication insufficient, there will be no vomiting or diarrhea; this is not due to other reasons. If the effect is slow, administer with hot drink juice. If vomiting and diarrhea do not stop, eat two or mouthfuls of vinegar rice to stop them. During medication, avoid old, smelly, raw, cold, sour, slippery, and sticky foods. Garlic, pork, chicken, fish, dog, horse, donkey meat, white wine, and sexual intercourse are prohibited for seven days before resuming.
On the first day of taking the medicine, supplement on the second day. Eat new rice, make soup/congee with chive juice. Three or four meals are very good, but do not eat until completely full. Contraindicated for postpartum women.
After vomiting and diarrhea, keep the mouth closed and speak little. Rest in a warm bed and room free of wind. Treats all *gu* poisons, demons, evil spirits, and *zhu* diseases. Conditions fluctuate. Hard accumulations, heart pain like biting, unable to sit or lie down. Seasonal evil Qi warm diseases. Wind-heat miasma spreading contagiously causing family extinction. Sometimes fever like malaria, swollen throat blocking food intake. Or irritability, fullness, shortness of breath. Face and eyes sometimes red. Eyes red and yellow. Dry retching. Vomiting. Red-and-white dysentery. Heat like clouds. Desire to run madly or commit suicide. Hallucinations of seeing ghosts. Cold hands and feet. Desire for cold drinks yet never satisfied. Reaching out into empty air. Swelling of face and eyes with sores. Deafness and dim vision. Stiffness of head, neck, back, and spine unable to bend or stretch. Sudden itching of hands and feet. Hundred ghosts, evil *zhu*, fox spirits entering the skin. Pain without fixed location. Prescription as follows:
Shexiang (Moschus), Dansha (Cinnabar), Teshengshi (Magnetite/Magnetic Stone), Mamudugong (Aristolochia debilis/Guijiao), Xionghuang (Realgar) (each 1 liang), Badou (Semen Crotonis) (90 grains), Qingyegen (Radix Puerariae Lobatae) (3 liang, some versions omit), Machixian (Herba Portulacae Oleraceae) (1 liang, choose those growing with ridges).
The above eight materials are powdered. Separately pound Badou into a paste. Combine and pound five thousand strokes. Add honey, pound another ten thousand strokes. Form pills the size of small beans. Strong individuals take two pills; weak individuals take one pill. Once ingested, it spreads like clouds and rain, penetrating interior and exterior. Descends from the head, circulating through the five Zang and six Fu organs. Soul and spirit become calm and stable, temperament becomes peaceful. Disease above the diaphragm causes vomiting; below the diaphragm causes diarrhea. Or discharges colored hot water containing snake/insect toxins. Or no vomiting/diarrhea occurs, but the condition gradually alleviates and heals. Ten thousand insects, spirits, foxes, ghosts, and long-standing masses all dissipate. In the exterior, sweat is produced; in the interior, direct purgation occurs. The name of this medicine is taboo/silenced, hence this formula has no name.
