(Two treatises, twelve prescriptions, five moxibustion methods)
The treatise states: The disease of Chest Bi (Chest Obstruction Syndrome) causes a sensation of hardness, fullness, and stifling pain in the heart region. There is painful obstruction in the muscles, with a twisting, urgent, needle-like stabbing pain, making it impossible to bend forward or extend backward. The skin over the chest is entirely painful and cannot be touched by hand. There is rebellious Qi causing fullness in the chest, shortness of breath, coughing and expectoration that triggers pain, a feeling of blockage and difficulty in the throat, frequent sensations resembling itching, dryness in the throat, occasional desire to vomit, mental restlessness and oppression, spontaneous sweating, or pain radiating through to the back. If left untreated, it can be fatal within a few days.
Another treatise states: Pulse diagnosis should assess both excessive and deficient conditions. A superficial pulse that is faint (Yang Wei) combined with a deep, string-taut pulse (Yin Xian) indicates Chest Bi accompanied by pain. This occurs because of extreme deficiency. Since we know Yang Qi deficiency resides in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), the reason for Chest Bi and Heart Pain is precisely due to the patient's string-taut pulse.
In a healthy person without aversion to cold or fever, shortness of breath where respiration is insufficient constitutes an Excess syndrome.
