Treatment for swelling caused by malignant wind-toxin, pain and numbness (bi-syndrome with loss of sensation), scrofula (lymph node tuberculosis) and malignant sores, carbuncles and furuncles causing calf swelling, weakness in the legs, hemiplegia, and various other diseases.
Yege (Gelsemium elegans), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), Sheyan (Herb with detoxifying properties, possibly Ophiopogon japonicus or similar), Mangcao (Illicium lanceolatum, noted as Yinyu in Wai Tai Mi Yao), Wutou (Aconitum carmichaelii), Jiegeng (Platycodon grandiflorus), Shengma (Cimicifuga foetida), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia divaricata), Chuanjiao (Zanthoxylum bungeanum), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Biejia (Turtle Shell), Xionghuang (Realgar), Badou (Croton Seed) each 1 liang; Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza root) 3 liang; Zhizhuhua (Rhododendron molle flower) 1 sheng.
The above fifteen ingredients are coarsely crushed, soaked in four sheng of Kujiu (vinegar) overnight to allow absorption, then added to five jin of Zhu Gao (lard). Simmer over low heat, lifting the herbs up and down three times (San Shang San Xia). When the oil turns pale yellow, strain out the dregs. Apply the ointment to the affected area. This formula must not be administered indiscriminately to ordinary people; exercise caution. (Hu Qia's formula lacks Danshen and Zhizhuhua but includes Xixin; additionally, Su Gong suggests replacing Badou, Xionghuang, Sheyan, Fangfeng, and Biejia with Baizhi, Fangji, Wuzhuyu, Fuzi, and Danggui.)
Formula for treating all types of wind-dampness causing pain in bones, muscles, and joints, and bi-syndrome.
Danggui (Angelica sinensis root), Xixin (Asarum root and rhizome), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome) each 1 liang; Guixin (Cinnamon twig bark) 5 cun; Tianxiong (Prepared lateral root of Aconitum) 30 pieces; Shengdi (Rehmannia glutinosa root) 3 jin; Baizhi (Angelica dahurica root) 1.5 liang.
The above twelve ingredients are coarsely crushed, soaked overnight in Shengdi juice. Boil Zhu Fang (pig fat), strain out the dregs, add the herbs, and boil for fifteen boils. Strain out the dregs again, add powder of Dansha (Cinnabar), stir while hot, and massage the affected area with hands warmed by fire. Perform this massage one thousand times daily until recovery. (Hu Qia's formula adds Renshen and Fangfeng each 3 liang, Fuzi 30 pieces, Xionghuang 2 liang, totaling fifteen ingredients. Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang and Qian Jin Yi Fang contain Fuzi 22 zhu, Xionghuang 2.5 liang, and Da Cu 3 sheng, totaling fifteen ingredients. Cui Shi's formula is identical to Qian Jin Yi Fang.)
Treatment for sudden onset of wind-toxin, severe cramping pain in the abdomen, Feishi (flying corpse pathogen) invading the zang-organs, nightmare sleep without waking, Shijue (corpse-like coma) with sudden unconsciousness, and indigestion of retained food. Take orally with warm wine, dosage size of a jujube pit. Stop when bowel movement occurs. If the toxin is severe and the throat is blocked preventing swallowing, break the teeth, insert a green onion leaf into the mouth, and pour the ointment through the leaf to let it slide down. For patients with swelling, face the fire and massage the swollen area. In years with warmer climates, to prevent illness or when walking in fog and dew, take with wine, or insufflate into the nose.
Chuanjiao (Zanthoxylum bungeanum), Danggui (Angelica sinensis root), Xionghuang (Realgar), Dansha (Cinnabar) each 2 liang; Wutou (Aconitum carmichaelii), Badou (Croton Seed) each 1 sheng; Xiebai (Allium macrostemon bulb) 1 jin; Mangcao (Illicium lanceolatum) 4 liang.
The above eight ingredients are coarsely crushed, soaked overnight in three sheng of Kujiu (vinegar). Use five jin of pig lard, simmer over fire from an east-facing stove using reed kindling. Lift the herbs up and down five times (Wu Shang Wu Xia). When the Xiebai turns yellow, squeeze out and strain the dregs. Grind Xionghuang and Dansha into powder, add them, and stir until the mixture solidifies. Store the finished ointment in a non-porous vessel. For poison from centipedes, snakes, bees, etc., apply the ointment to the wound. For external ailments, apply and massage thoroughly. (Another version uses Shijueming 1 liang and Wugong 2 pieces, named Badu Gao. Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang does not use Badou or Mangcao, naming it Wudu Gao.)
