Formula for treating abdominal distension during pregnancy with fluid accumulation between the fetus.
Carp (one, two jin) [Cyprinus carpio], Baizhu (five liang) [Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma], Shengjiang (three liang) [Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma], Shaoyao [Paeoniae Radix], Danggui (each three liang) [Angelicae Sinensis Radix], Fuling (four liang) [Poria].
The above six herbs are cut into pieces. Boil the carp in one dou and two sheng of water first until cooked, clarify the liquid, take eight sheng, add the herbs, decoct to obtain three sheng, divide into five doses.
Formula for treating toxic swelling during pregnancy:
Wujinggen (芜菁根, Turnip Root), wash clean and peel, pound into a thin paste mixed with vinegar, ensure no juice remains. Boil vigorously for two or three boils, apply warm to the swollen area, wrap tightly with cloth, twice daily. Keep warm when cold. If not using the root, use the seed; if swelling is in the throat, take the juice and gargle/swallow.
Another formula: Burn cow dung, mix with vinegar, apply to the affected area, change when dry. Can also be taken as a "fangcunbi" dose, three times daily.
Formula for treating swelling and spasms in hands and feet during pregnancy:
Chixiaodou (five sheng) [Vigna angularis Seed], Shanglugen (one jin, sliced) [Phytolaccae Radix].
The above two herbs are boiled in three dou of water to obtain one dou of liquid. Drink slowly in small amounts. Finish and prepare again. Another method adds Zekel (one jin) [Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix].
(One treatise containing eight articles, twenty-one formulas, one acupuncture method)
Treatise states: Although the parturient woman is in a state of impurity, during the time of pain, and before and after delivery, one must not allow persons associated with death and mourning to enter the home. Their presence causes difficult labor; if delivery has occurred, it harms the infant.
Women delivering milk should avoid the "Fan Zhi Month" (a taboo month). If this month arrives, deliver on ox hide or ash, ensuring blood and foul matter do not touch the ground, as this can cause death. Water from washing clothes must be collected in vessels; this taboo ends after the specified month.
If childbirth does not follow the obstetric charts and taboos are violated, mother and child may die subsequently. If not fatal, both suffer illness, and all affairs go unsatisfactorily.
If one follows the charts and avoids violations, the mother remains healthy, and the child is easy to raise. Specifically, many people watching during labor is taboo; only two or three people should be present. Inform others only after delivery is complete. Crowds viewing lead to dystocia.
The parturient woman must not be hurried or fearful. Attendants must be steady and prudent, avoiding premature slowness, haste, or depression. Depression leads to difficult labor. If abdominal pain occurs with a sensation of fire in the eyes, the fetus is turning and will not be born immediately. After birth, everyone including the mother must avoid asking about the sex of the baby. Upon touching the ground, give the infant five mouthfuls of fresh well water. Avoid warm soups/foods. Do not let the mother view impure substances.
Parturient women should cautiously consume hot medicines and hot noodles. Dietary temperature should be lukewarm, similar to body temperature.
Upon approaching labor, remove ordinary clothing. Cover the stove head and opening tightly with a cage to facilitate delivery.
For dystocia, fetal death in utero, malpresentation, or retained placenta, consult various chapters for applicable formulas.
Formula for dystocia, partial delivery, retained placenta, fetal death in utero, fetal position against the spine, prolonged labor on the birthing mat, blood qi rushing to the heart, pale complexion, and impending exhaustion of vital energy:
Chunjie (two sheng) [Mature Wine], Baimi (white honey), Chengjian Zhigao (pig fat, each one sheng).
Decoct the three ingredients together to obtain two sheng. Divide into two doses. If unable to take more, take according to capacity. For postpartum retention of lochia with blood qi rushing to the heart causing painful irritability, replace Chunjie with Dihuangzhi (Rehmanniae Juice).
Formula for dystocia:
Huai Zhi (sliced, two sheng) [Sophorae Tomentosae Ramulus], Yu Bai Pi (sliced) [Ulmus Rubra Cortex], Dama Ren (each one sheng) [Cannabis Fructus], Qumai [Dianthi Herba], Tongcao (each five liang) [Tetrapanacis Medulla], Niuxi (four liang) [Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix].
Cut the six herbs. Decoct in one dou and two sheng of water to obtain three sheng and half. Divide into five doses.
Another formula: Swallow two seeds of Gaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fruit).
Another formula: Take fourteen pieces of used grass from the toilet, burn to ash, mix with water, and take orally.
Another formula: Have the husband spit into the wife's mouth fourteen times; delivery will occur immediately.
Another formula: Acupuncture at Liang Jianjing (Bilateral Jianjing, GB21), insert one cun, perform reducing method. Delivery occurs shortly thereafter.
Formula for dystocia lasting three days without delivery:
Burn rat head to powder. Take a "fangcunqi" dose with Jinghua water (well water drawn early in the morning), three times daily.
Another formula: Swallow two pills of Chezhou Zhi (axle grease) the size of soybeans.
Another formula: Burn the pestle until red-hot, put into wine, and drink.
Another formula: Burn the ring of a large knife, pour one cup of wine over it, drink in one gulp. This saves those dying from failure to deliver.
Formula for prolonged dystocia with exhaustion of strength and vitality, unable to deliver, indicating pre-existing chronic illness:
Ejiao (two liang) [Colla Corii Asini], Chixiaodou (two sheng) [Vigna angularis Seed].
Boil the beans in nine sheng of water until cooked. Remove dregs, add Ejiao until melted. Take five he per dose. If no improvement, take again. Not exceeding three doses ensures delivery.
Another formula: Huai Zi (fourteen seeds) [Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus], Puhuang (one he) [Typhae Pollen].
Mix into wine, take warm. If not delivered shortly, take again. Water administration is also acceptable.
Another formula: Shengjiangzhi (fresh ginger juice), Shengdihuangzhi (fresh Rehmannia juice, each half sheng).
Decoct together until cooked, take in one dose.
Formula for dystocia and premature labor desire before term:
Zhimu (one liang) [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma] powdered, made into pills with honey the size of rabbit feces. Take one pill per dose. If pain persists, take another pill.
