Pianfeng (Hemiplegia due to Wind) refers to a condition where wind pathogenic factors invade only one side of the body. If a person has localized deficiency in their constitution, wind pathogens will take advantage of this deficiency to cause injury, resulting in Pianfeng. The symptoms may include loss of sensation to pain or itching in certain areas, flaccidity and weakness of limbs, or numbness and pain. Regarding treatments such as hot compresses, acupuncture, and stone therapy, there are separate specific prescriptions; these are not detailed here. Methods for nourishment, supplementation, and therapeutic exercises (Daoyin) are attached below.
**Therapeutic Exercises (Daoyin):**
Assume a lateral recumbent position and vigorously stretch/pull both sides of the body fourteen times (two sets of seven). This can alleviate stiffness and rigidity of the skull, headache with vertigo (Toufeng), dizziness (Naoxuan), throat obstruction (Houbi), and Pianfeng caused by cold qi pouring into the inner arms. Another method states: Stand on one foot, extend one arm backward fully and tense it; grasp the Yongquan (KI-1) acupoint with the other hand, pull the foot urgently, and simultaneously tense the pulling hand. Hold the extreme posture and switch left and right fourteen times. This eliminates Pianfeng in the upper and lower limbs and harmonizes Yin Qi.
**Guangji Fang (Prescriptions from Guangji) for Pianfeng - Hemp Seed Decoction (Mazi Tang):**
* Cannabis Fructus (Damaizi): 1 sheng, cleaned and selected, soaked in water overnight.
* Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang): De-stemmed.
* Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng).
* Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang).
* Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi).
* Schizonepetae Herba (Jingjie).
* Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong): Each 3 liang.
* Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin): 2 liang.
* Jujubae Fructus (Zao): 30 pieces, pits removed.
* Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong): [Dosage implied missing in text, listed among fifteen ingredients].
Cut the above fifteen ingredients. Boil in 2 dou of water until the hemp seeds sprout/crack. Strain and retain 1 dou of liquid. First, boil Mahuang three times, skimming off the foam. Add all other herbs and simmer. This formula also promotes bowel movement. For patients suffering from wind disorders or severe wind, three to four doses are sufficient. Dietary restrictions: Avoid raw green onions, raw vegetables, hot noodles, buckwheat, pork, fish, bamboo shoots, and any stale or foul-smelling foods.
**For Pianfeng with paralysis:** After taking the Hemp Seed Decoction, follow with Zhishi Wan (Immature Bitter Orange Pill):
* Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi): Roasted.
* Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng).
* Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo).
* Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen).
* Antelopis Cornu (Lingyangjiao): Powdered. (Each 6 fen).
* Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganjuhua).
* Puerariae Radix (Gange).
* Coicis Semen (Yiyiren).
* Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin): Each 4 fen.
* Poria (Fuling).
* Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma).
* Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian).
* Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdihuang): Each 8 fen.
Grind the thirteen ingredients and sieve. Mix with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 20 pills with wine on an empty stomach, increasing gradually to 30 pills. Take twice daily. Dietary restrictions: Avoid raw green onions, vinegar products, pork, cold water, Pyrethri Flos (Wuyao), raw vegetables, hot noodles, buckwheat, chicken, fish, garlic, bamboo shoots, and stale/foul foods. (From Volume 1)
**Qianjin Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction from Qianjin Fang):** Treats chronic Pianfeng that does not heal over years, with withered and thin hands and feet, facial deviation (Koumian pianpi), insufficient spirit, and disordered speech.
* Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao): Roasted.
* Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin).
* Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong).
* Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang): De-stemmed.
* Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen).
* Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui).
* Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao): Each 1 liang.
* Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duohuo): 3 liang.
* Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qinjiao): 1.5 liang.
* Poria cum Radix (Fushen).
* Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu).
* Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin).
* Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin): Each 1 liang.

**Beiji Xu Yu Formula:** Treats Pianfeng with hemiplegia and aphasia.
Swallow raw Apricot Kernels (Xingren) whole, including skin and tips. Start with 7 kernels daily, gradually increasing to 49 (seven sevens), cycling continuously. After meals, swallow with Bamboo Sap (Zhuli), amount arbitrary. Total daily intake should be 1 sheng. (Same as Wen Zhong's prescription in Volume 2)
**Yannian Formula:** Treats Pianfeng, hemiplegia, cold bi, and wandering pathogens.
Peach Kernels (Taoren): 1,700 pieces. Remove tips and skins. Soak in 1 dou 3 sheng of good wine (using large measure) for 21 days. Remove peaches, dry them, and grind into fine powder suitable for making pills. Take twice daily, 30 pills each time, washed down with the wine used for soaking.
