The *Qianjin Fang* states that according to old theories, when conception occurs for three months, the fetus changes with external objects, and its constitution is not yet fixed. Therefore, during the first three months of pregnancy, it is desired that the pregnant woman observes rhinoceroses, elephants, and fierce beasts; pearls, jade, and treasures; sages, gentlemen, and great masters of virtue; rituals, music, bells, and drums; sacrificial vessels (*zu* and *dou*) and military formations; burns fragrant incense; recites the *Book of Poetry* and *Book of Documents*, as well as ancient and modern admonitions; resides in a simple and quiet place; does not eat food cut improperly; does not sit on mats arranged improperly; plays the qin and se; harmonizes the mind and spirit; moderates desires and passions; and keeps all affairs tranquil. The child born will be excellent, long-lived, loyal, filial, benevolent, righteous, intelligent, and free from disease. This is said to be the prenatal education of King Wen.
It further states that while in the womb, before the days and months are complete and Yin and Yang are fully prepared, the viscera, bones, and joints are not yet fully formed. Therefore, from conception until delivery, there are taboos regarding diet and living habits.
It also states that eating chicken eggs and dried carp during pregnancy causes the child to have many sores.
Eating chicken meat and glutinous rice during pregnancy causes the child to have many tapeworms (*Cestoda*).
Eating sparrow meat and bean paste during pregnancy causes the child to have dark spots all over the face.
Eating goat meat during pregnancy causes the child to be prone to illness.
Eating rabbit and dog meat during pregnancy causes the child to be mute and cleft-lipped.
Eating donkey and horse meat during pregnancy leads to post-term pregnancy (delayed delivery).
Eating mulberries and duck meat during pregnancy causes breech presentation or footling presentation ("turning out") and coldness of the heart.
Eating mule meat during pregnancy causes difficult labor.
Eating sparrow meat and drinking alcohol during pregnancy causes internal licentiousness, emotional disorder, and a lack of shame.
Pregnant women should not urinate or defecate in inappropriate places, as this will certainly lead to miscarriage and even death.
Pregnant women should not eat sheep liver, as it causes the child to suffer many misfortunes.
Pregnant women should not eat soft-shelled turtle, as it causes the child to have a short neck.
Eating ice slush during pregnancy leads to sterility. (All above from Volume 2)
Regarding the first month of pregnancy, named "Initial Embryo" (*Shi Pei*), diet should be well-cooked, flavors sour and sweet, suitable for eating barley, and avoiding fishy, pungent, and spicy foods. This is called "Establishing Correctness" (*Cai Zheng*).
It also states that in the first month, the Foot Jueyin Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture/moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Foot Jueyin internally connects to the Liver, which governs sinews and blood. At one month, blood flow is sluggish, and physical labor should be avoided. Sleep must be quiet, and fear should be prevented.
In the first month, Yin and Yang newly combine to form the embryo. If Cold predominates, pain occurs; if Heat predominates, sudden fright occurs. Lifting heavy objects causes lower back pain, abdominal fullness, and uterine urgency. If sudden bleeding occurs, preventive treatment is needed. The Wuci Ji Tang (Black Hen Decoction) is appropriate.
*Wuci Ji Tang:* One Black Hen (prepared for cooking), Poria (1 liang), Evodia (1 sheng), Peony, Atractylodes Macrocephala (each 3 liang), Ophiopogon (5 he, hearts removed), Ginseng (3 liang), Donkey-hide Gelatin (2 liang), Licorice (1 liang, roasted), Ginger (1 liang, sliced).
Ten ingredients are chopped. Boil the hen in 12 sheng of water to obtain 6 sheng of broth. Remove the hen and boil the remaining herbs in the broth to obtain 3 sheng. Add 3 sheng of wine and melt the gelatin. Obtain 3 sheng total. Strain. Warm and take 1 sheng, three times daily.
If the first month's fetus was previously damaged, Bupai Tang (Fetus-Nourishing Decoction) should be taken preventively.
*Bupai Tang:* Asarum (1 liang), Saposhnikovia (2 liang), Smoked Plum (1 sheng), Evodia (5 he), Rehmannia Root (dried), Atractylodes Macrocephala (each 1 liang), Barley (5 he), Ginger (4 liang).
Eight ingredients are chopped. Boil in 7 sheng of water to obtain 2.5 sheng. Strain. Divide into three warm doses. If Cold predominates, double the Asarum and Evodia. If Heat predominates with thirst, remove Asarum and Evodia, add Trichosanthes Root (2 liang). If there is excessive thinking, remove Barley, add Biota Seed (3 he). Avoid raw vegetables, Xanthium, peaches, plums, and sparrow meat. Another version uses Ginseng (1 liang).
Regarding the second month of pregnancy, named "Initial Paste" (*Shi Gao*), avoid pungent and fishy odors, reside in quiet places, and men should avoid exertion (sexual intercourse). All joints ache. This is called "Fetal Knotting."
In the second month, the Foot Shaoyang Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture/moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Foot Shaoyang internally connects to the Gallbladder, which governs essence. At two months, the fetal essence forms in the uterus; care must be taken to prevent shock and disturbance.
At two months, Yin and Yang begin to occupy the meridians. If Cold predominates, the fetus may fail to develop; if Heat predominates, the fetus may wither. Sudden exposure to Wind-Cold causes movement, chest fullness, umbilical tension, stiff back, sudden bleeding, and alternating chills and fever. Mugwort Decoction is indicated.
*Mugwort Decoction:* Salvia (3 liang), Angelica Sinensis, Ginseng, Ephedra (nodes removed), Artemisia Folium, Donkey-hide Gelatin (roasted, each 2 liang), Licorice (1 liang, roasted), Jujube (12 pieces, broken), Ginger (1 liang).
Nine ingredients are chopped. Boil in 3 sheng of wine and 10 sheng of water until reduced by half. Strain, add gelatin, and simmer to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three warm doses. Avoid Seaweed and Chinese Cabbage.
If the second month's fetus was previously damaged, Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction) should be taken preventively.
*Huanglian Tang:* Coptis, Ginseng (each 1 liang), Evodia (5 he), Fresh Rehmannia Root (5 liang), Ginger (3 liang).
Five ingredients are chopped. Boil in 7 sheng of vinegar-water mixture to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into four doses: three times daily and once at night. Prepare every ten days. If discomfort is felt, add Smoked Plum (1 sheng). If adding plum, use plain water instead of vinegar-water. Avoid pork, cold water, and Xanthium. Another version adds Angelica Sinensis (0.5 liang).
Regarding the third month of pregnancy, named "Initial Fetus" (*Shi Tai*). At this time, the form is not fixed, and it transforms upon seeing things. To conceive a boy, handle bows and arrows; to conceive a girl, play with beads/jewels. For beauty, gaze frequently at jade; for virtue, sit upright in purity. This is "external image affecting internal sensation."
In the third month, the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture/moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Hand Jueyin internally connects to the Heart. Avoid sorrow, excessive thought, and shock.
At three months, the form is determined. If Cold predominates, stool is green; if Heat predominates, urination is difficult (yellow or red). Sudden fright, worry, anger, or joy causing falls disturbs the meridians, leading to abdominal fullness, periumbilical pain, back pain, and sudden bleeding. Rooster Meat Decoction is indicated.
*Rooster Meat Decoction:* One Rooster (prepared for cooking), Licorice (roasted), Ginseng, Poria, Donkey-hide Gelatin (each 2 liang), Scutellaria, Atractylodes Macrocephala (each 1 liang), Ophiopogon (hearts removed, 5 he), Peony (4 liang), Jujube (12 pieces, broken), Ginger (1 liang, sliced).
Eleven ingredients are chopped. Boil the rooster in 15 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add herbs, boil until half remains. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and gelatin, simmer again to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses, finish within one day. Rest warmly. Avoid Seaweed, Chinese Cabbage, vinegar, peaches, plums, and sparrow meat. Another version adds Angelica Sinensis and Ligusticum Chuanxiong (each 2 liang), omitting Scutellaria and Ginger.
If the third month's fetus was previously damaged, Fushen Tang (Poria Spirit Decoction) should be taken preventively.
*Fushen Tang:* Poria with Hostwood, Salvia, Dragon Bone (each 1 liang), Donkey-hide Gelatin, Angelica Sinensis, Licorice (roasted), Ginseng (each 2 liang), Adzuki Bean (21 grains), Jujube (13 pieces, broken).
Nine ingredients are chopped. Boil in 10 sheng of vinegar-water to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into four doses. Take one dose after seven days. For lower back pain, add Taxus Chinensis Stem and Leaf (2 liang). Avoid Seaweed and Chinese Cabbage. (*Shenshi Fang* includes Scallion White (2 liang) and Hemp Seed (1 sheng)).
Regarding the fourth month of pregnancy, water essence is received to form blood vessels. Diet should include rice, porridge, fish, and wild goose. This forms blood and Qi, opening the ears and eyes and circulating through the meridians.
In the fourth month, the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture/moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Hand Shaoyang internally connects to the Sanjiao. At four months, the six Fu organs are smoothly formed. Keep the body still, harmonize the mind, and regulate diet.
At four months, known as "Departing the Meridian," if Cold predominates, the epigastrium feels warm, nausea occurs, chest/diaphragm fullness arises, and appetite is lost. If Heat predominates, urination is difficult and frequent (like strangury), umbilical urgency occurs. Sudden Wind-Cold causes stiff neck, alternating chills/fever, body shock, back/abdominal pain, periodic episodes, fetal pressure on the chest, restlessness, and sudden bleeding. Chrysanthemum Decoction is indicated.
*Chrysanthemum Decoction:* Chrysanthemum (size of an egg, 1 piece), Ophiopogon (hearts removed, 1 sheng), Ephedra (3 liang, nodes removed), Donkey-hide Gelatin (3 liang, roasted), Licorice (2 liang, roasted), Angelica Sinensis (2 liang), Ginseng (1.5 liang), Ginger (5 liang), Pinellia (2 liang, washed), Jujube (12 pieces, broken).
Ten ingredients. Boil in 8 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and gelatin, simmer to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Rest warmly. Induce sweating and apply powder. Protect against Wind-Cold for 4-5 days. Avoid mutton, Seaweed, Chinese Cabbage, and maltose.
If the fourth month's fetus was previously damaged, Tiaozhong Tang (Middle-Harmonizing Decoction) should be taken preventively.
*Tiaozhong Tang:* Peony (4 liang), Licorice (roasted), Ligusticum Chuanxiong, Dipsacus (each 1 liang), Li Root Bark (fresh), Bupleurum, Atractylodes Macrocephala (each 3 liang), Smoked Plum (1 sheng), Angelica Sinensis (1.5 liang), Ginger (4 liang), Magnolia Bark (roasted), Immature Bitter Orange (roasted, each 2 liang).
Twelve ingredients are chopped. Boil in 10 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into four doses: three times daily and once at night. Take another dose after eight days. Another version includes Pinellia (2 liang). Avoid Seaweed, Chinese Cabbage, peaches, plums, and sparrow meat.
Regarding the fifth month of pregnancy, fire essence is received to form Qi. Wake up late, bathe, wash clothes, live in deep quarters, wear thick clothes, absorb morning sunlight to avoid Cold. Eat rice and wheat, beef and mutton soup, flavored with Evodia and five flavors. This nourishes Qi and stabilizes the Zang organs.
In the fifth month, the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture/moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Foot Taiyin internally connects to the Spleen. At five months, fetal limbs form. Avoid extreme hunger or fullness, dry foods, self-heating, and excessive fatigue.
At five months, hair begins to grow. If Heat predominates, dizziness, mental confusion, and vomiting occur. If Cold predominates, abdominal fullness/pain and frequent urination occur. Sudden terror, limb pain, alternating chills/fever, irregular fetal movement, abdominal pain/fainting, sudden collapse, and sudden bleeding indicate Ejiao Tang. (Alternative: Inula Flower Decoction).
*Ejiao Tang:* Donkey-hide Gelatin (4 liang, roasted), Ginseng (1 liang), Ophiopogon (1 sheng, hearts removed), Ginger (6 liang), Evodia, Inula Flower, Angelica Sinensis, Peony, Licorice (roasted), Scutellaria (each 1 liang).
Ten ingredients are chopped. Boil in 3 sheng of clear wine and 9 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and gelatin, simmer on low heat to obtain 3.5 sheng. Divide into four doses: three times daily and once at night, before meals. Repeat if necessary. Avoid Seaweed and Chinese Cabbage.
If the fifth month's fetus was previously damaged, Anzhong Tang (Middle-Anchoring Decoction) should be taken preventively.
*Anzhong Tang:* Licorice (roasted), Peony (each 3 liang), Angelica Sinensis, Ginseng, Dried Rehmannia, Ligusticum Chuanxiong (each 2 liang), Schisandra (5 he), Ophiopogon (hearts removed, 1 sheng), Hemp Seed (5 he), Ginger (6 liang), Jujube (35 pieces, broken), Scutellaria (1 liang).
Twelve ingredients are chopped. Boil in 7 sheng of water and 5 sheng of clear wine to obtain 3.5 sheng. Divide into four doses: three times daily and once at night. Take another dose after seven days. Avoid Chinese Cabbage, Seaweed, and Xanthium.
Regarding the sixth month of pregnancy, metal essence is received to form sinews. The body should engage in slight labor, not remain static. Go outdoors, watch running dogs and horses. Eat meat of birds of prey and fierce beasts. This alters the pores, toughens sinews, builds strength, and strengthens the back.
In the sixth month, the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture/moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Foot Yangming internally connects to the Stomach, governing the mouth and eyes. At six months, fetal mouth and eyes form. Harmonize the five flavors, eat sweet/delicious food, avoid overeating.
If the fetus moves suddenly and uncomfortably, with alternating chills/fever, abdominal distension, edema, fear, sudden bleeding, labor-like abdominal pain, and painful limbs, Maidong Tang is indicated.
