The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) provides a formula for treating sudden cold-induced pain and distension in the lower part of the body.
Burn bricks until hot, pour abundant vinegar on them, cover with three layers of cloth, and sit on it until recovery.
Another formula:
Panicum miliaceum grain (2 sheng), rendered sheep fat from winter (latter month) (2 liang, prepared by roasting).
Combine the above four ingredients to cook into a porridge; consume it all in one meal for recovery. (Both extracted from Volume 15)
According to the *Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases): Cold-heat dysentery arises from weakness of the intestines and stomach, where pre-existing internal cold is injured by external heat. The interplay of cold and heat causes the dysenteric stool to alternate between yellow and white colors.
If heat aggregates in the blood level, causing blood to seep into the intestinal tract, it transforms into bloody dysentery. If cold lingers within the intestines, condensing body fluids, it coagulates into white matter, forming "white stagnation," which may also manifest as red-and-white dysentery. Regarding moxibustion, cupping, acupuncture, and stone therapy, there are separate specific formulas. For nourishing and guiding therapies, they are attached below. The *Yangsheng Fang Dao Yin Fa* (Health Preservation Guide and Exercises) states: For diarrhea accompanied by cold, gently guide the qi to calm the abdomen, exhale slowly, inhale through the nose; when qi is sufficient and returns to normal, recovery occurs. For cases with heat, gently exhale to dispel it. (Extracted from Volume 17)
The *Shanfan* text provides the Xiangchi Tang (Fermented Soybean Decoction) for treating disharmony of cold and heat in the lower jiao, presenting as sudden red-and-white dysentery.
Douchi (Fermented Soybean) (1 sheng), Atractylodis Rhizoma (6 liang), Scallion White (cut, 1 sheng), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (2 liang).
Cut the above four ingredients, boil in 7 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng, divide into three doses. (Extracted from Volume 4)
The *Gujin Luyan* records the Raw Spring Pomegranate formula for treating heat-induced disharmony, presenting as dysentery that is stagnant, watery, or red-white/yellow-green.
Sour Pomegranate (5 fruits).
Crush the pomegranates including the shell, extract 2 sheng of juice. Divide into doses of 0.5 sheng, gradually consuming the full 2 sheng to stop the dysentery. For children, administer 2-3 he according to discretion. (Same as Qianjin Fang, extracted from Volume 10)
Another formula from Shen Shi for dysentery regardless of cold/heat or new/old onset.
Coptidis Rhizoma, Phellodendri Cortex, Dried Ginger, Licorice Root (prepared by roasting), Mugwort Leaf, Seed of Prunus mume (roasted, each 8 fen), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (3 pieces), Winter-rendered fat (size of a chicken egg).
Grind the above eight ingredients into powder. Melt the wax/fat with honey in a pan; add honey only after the wax is fully melted. If too dry, add more honey. Form pills. Take 40 pills on an empty stomach with water, twice daily, gradually increasing to 50-60 pills.
The *Jin Xiao* text provides the Huanglian Wan (Coptis Pill) for dysentery regardless of cold/heat, claiming divine efficacy.
Coptidis Rhizoma (1 liang), Poria (2 liang), Donkey-hide Gelatin (1 liang, prepared by roasting).
First grind Coptidis Rhizoma and Poria into powder. Melt Donkey-hide Gelatin with a small amount of water. Mix to form pills. Roll into balls by hand, dry in the sun. Based on severity, take 30-40 pills on an empty stomach with water, gradually increasing to 60 pills. Recovery is certain within 5-6 doses; this commonly used formula is highly effective.
Another formula for painful dysentery, regardless of cold/heat, including pus-and-blood dysentery.
Raw Rhinoceros Horn (crushed/shredded), Phellodendri Cortex (each 2 liang), Coptidis Rhizoma, Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (each 3 liang).
Grind the above four ingredients into powder. Boil glutinous rice to make a drink (do not overcook). Take one fang cun bi (measure of volume) on an empty stomach daily, twice daily, for recovery. Do not underestimate this formula. This formula was obtained from Director Wang of the Board of Revenue and proved extremely effective. The *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* mentions Dang Gui, noting that the formula from Official Geng's family is particularly good for postpartum conditions.
Dr. Cui’s formula for dysentery regardless of cold/heat, red/white, chronic/new, including infantile malnutrition fever. (Official Liu Mi suffered from chronic dysentery for years; every time he took this formula, he recovered.)
Donkey-hide Gelatin (2 liang; 1 liang prepared by roasting for medicine, 1 liang melted into clear liquid), Coptidis Rhizoma (1 liang), Dried Ginger (2 liang), Terminalia Chebula Retz. Fruit (2 pieces; increase to 3-4 pieces if chronic dysentery with severe intestinal slippage).
Grind the above four ingredients into powder. Melt the gelatin clear with vinegar, mix thoroughly, and form pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take 25 pills with water, twice daily, gradually increasing to 30 pills. Adjust dosage for elderly and children according to discretion. Observe usual dietary restrictions. (Note: If using cold-natured agents, take with wine; for heat-dysentery, take with gruel broth. Extracted from Volume 3)
Wen Zhong’s formula for dysentery regardless of cold/heat and five-color dysentery, effective immediately upon ingestion.
Coptidis Rhizoma (4 fen), Phellodendri Cortex, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Scutellariae Radix (each 1 liang), Donkey-hide Gelatin (2 liang, prepared by roasting), Prepared Mugwort (1 liang).
Grind the above six ingredients into powder. Dissolve the gelatin in 2 sheng of vinegar, then add other herbs and boil until suitable for forming pills the size of soybeans. Take 70-80 pills with water, twice during the day and once at night. Particularly suitable for the elderly. For postpartum dysentery, add Polygonati Multiflori Rhizoma (Huangbo/Polygonatum? Note: Text says Pu Huang - Typhae Pollen) 1 liang, mix with honey to form pills for divine efficacy. (Extracted from Volume 3)
