According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): When a disease has just healed, the *Qi* and Blood are still deficient, and body fluids have not yet recovered. If one engages in labor immediately, illness may recur. Excessive talking or thinking damages the Spirit (*Shen*); combing hair or bathing consumes physical strength. Forcing oneself to work when the body is unable to bear it generates internal heat. When this heat returns to enter the meridians and collaterals, causing the disease to recur, it is called "Lao Fu" (Relapse due to Labor). Furthermore, after a new recovery, the Spleen and Stomach remain weak, and the Qi of grain (nutritional essence) has not recovered. If one consumes fatty meat, raw fish, cakes, dates, chestnuts, etc., which cannot be digested, these foods stagnate and accumulate in the intestines and stomach, causing distension and firmness. This leads to recurrent fever and illness, known as "Shi Fu" (Relapse due to Diet). (All from Volume 9)
*Guangji Fang* (Prescriptions from Guangji Hospital) treats relapse due to labor after Tianxing Reqi (Acute Febrile Disease caused by epidemic pathogens), where headache recurs as in the initial illness. Shu Shi Tang (Mouse Dropping Decoction).
Xiong Shu Shi (Male Mouse Droppings, 30-7 pieces, fried and powdered; added when decoction is ready) Gan Ge Gen (Kudzu Root, 2 liang) Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit, 14 pieces, broken apart) Cong Bai (Scallion White, 1 sheng) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 8 he)
Cut the above five ingredients. Boil in 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1.7 sheng. Remove dregs, add mouse dropping powder. Divide into two warm doses. The interval between doses should be equivalent to walking for six or seven *li*. Aim for slight sweating. Adjust if defecation is difficult. Observe dietary restrictions as per general medication rules.
Also treats relapse due to labor occurring several days after illness. Zhi Shi Tang (Immature Bitter Orange Decoction).
Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange, 3 pieces, roasted) Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit, 14 pieces, broken apart) Cong Bai (Scallion White, chopped, 1 sheng) Xiang Chi (Fragrant Fermented Soybean, 0.5 sheng) Shu Shi (Mouse Droppings, 14 pieces)
Boil the above five ingredients in 1 dou of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Divide into three warm doses. Administer one dose every interval equivalent to walking six or seven *li*. Adjust if defecation is difficult. Observe dietary restrictions as per general medication rules. (All from Volume 1)
*Shenshi Fang* (Prescriptions from Master Shen) Zhu Ye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction) treats deficiency heat, Lao Fu (relapse due to labor), and Shi Fu (relapse due to diet) following Tianxing disease. Symptoms include heaviness in the four limbs, weakness upon rising from lying down, shortness of breath, emaciation, and weakness.
Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaves, 1 bundle) Xiao Mai (Wheat Grains, 1 sheng) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1 liang, roasted) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang, crushed) Fu Ling (Poria, 2 liang) Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 sheng, washed to remove slipperiness) Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, 2 liang) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 2 liang) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 liang) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 2 liang) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 4 liang) Da Zao (Jujube Fruit, 20 pieces, broken apart)
Cut the above twelve ingredients. Boil in 1.2 dou of water. First boil Zhu Ye and Xiao Mai until the water reduces by 4 sheng. Remove dregs, then add remaining herbs. Boil until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum), Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage), vinegar-preserved foods, Mutton, and Yi Tang (Maltose).
*Beiji Qianjin Yaofang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies) treats Lao Fu with a compound formula.
Use 3 sheng of rice flour. Mix with warm water and take. Cover thickly to induce sweating. Then, mix a small amount of Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate/White Lead) with water and take it; this is also effective. (From Volume 1)
*Yannian Milu* (Secret Records for Longevity) Ge Gen Yin (Kudzu Drink) primarily treats Lao Fu after febrile diseases, body pain, and severe fever with restlessness due to Tianxing. Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Decoction).
Ge Gen (Kudzu Root, 1 liang) Cong Bai (Scallion White, 1 handful) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 0.5 sheng) Mi (Rice, 1 he)
First cut Ge Gen. Boil in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 7 sheng. Add Cong Bai and boil until reduced to 4 sheng. Remove Ge Gen and Cong Bai dregs. Add Chi and a small amount of Mi. Boil for three boils. Filter out Mi and other dregs. Divide into four doses. Recovery occurs with sweating. Prepare and take again the next morning. Avoid Pork, Garlic, etc. (All from Volume 9)
*Bixiao Fang* (Prescriptions of Certain Efficacy) treats Lao Fu after Tianxing disease. Shu Shi Tang (Mouse Dropping Decoction).
Xiong Shu Shi (Male Mouse Droppings, 5 pieces, pointed at both ends) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 1 sheng) Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit, 20 pieces, broken apart) Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange, 3 pieces, split in middle, roasted until yellow)
Boil the above four ingredients in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 2.4 sheng. Divide into four doses. Interval between doses: time taken to walk ten *li*. If constipation/stiff stool is felt, add Da Huang (Rhubarb Root) 2 liang. (From Volume 1)
