Zhang Zhongjing said: The four limbs are the branches of the body; their Qi is connected to the Zang and Fu organs. Since they are superficial, moxibustion should not be excessive but must follow the prescribed number of moxa cones according to the meridians. For other diseases, one should follow standard practices. However, for Hongjiao (a disease characterized by swelling, numbness, or atrophy of the feet), this rule does not apply. To treat wind-toxin-induced Hongjiao, moxibustion should be abundant; adhering to the meridian cone count will make it difficult to cure the disease quickly.
Pine wood can attract fire.
Injury to tendons.
Place pine wood underneath to catch the fire. KT stone, hard like jade, can strike sparks from solid iron when struck with a hammer; place rotten elm wood underneath to ignite it. Mugwort (Ai Ye) can also be used to generate fire. This refers to the self-extinguishing of moxa fire; do not blow on the moxa during moxibustion, allowing it to extinguish naturally.
The lower end is three fen wide.
Taking two fen as the standard.
The disease will not be eliminated.
This disease is famous.
Qi exits like a thief leaving home.
Especially suitable when a thief leaves the door.
Qianjin Fangfeng Tang treats limb deficiency with wind invasion, slight internal heat, immobility of joints, mental confusion with incoherent speech, unpredictable episodes, and lack of self-awareness.
Zhi Facun in the South found this prescription very effective; it is mild and non-damaging, superior to Xuming Tang, Yuebi Tang, and Fengyin Tang. It is commonly used by people in Luozhou and Guangzhou. Also
Fangfeng (3 liang) Mahuang (3 liang, nodes removed) Qin Jiao (3 liang) Duhuo (3 liang) Danggui (3 liang) Yuanzhi (2 liang, heart removed) Mu Fangji (2 liang) Gancao (2 liang, honey-fried) Renshen (2 liang) Huangqin (2 liang) Shengma (2 liang) Shaoyao (2 liang) Shigao (1 liang, crushed) Shexiang (2 fen) Shengjiang (2 liang) Banxia (2 liang, washed)
Cut the above sixteen ingredients. Boil in 13 sheng of water until 4 sheng remain. Take 1 sheng per dose. After the first dose, cover tightly to induce slight sweating. Bowel movements may occur two to three times. Wait the time it takes to walk ten li before taking the next dose. If there is heat, add Dahuang (2 liang). For those with pre-existing cold pain in the heart, double Danggui, add Guixin (3 liang), and remove Dahuang. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, Yangrou, and Xingtang. (Another formula includes Baizhu, from Volume 7.)
Qianjin Yi Qing Wan treats various wind pathogens affecting the skin, flesh, and body in Hongjiao.
Wutou (1 liang) Fuzi (3 liang, processed) Mahuang (4 liang, nodes removed) Add Zhishi (4 liang, honey-fried)
Grind the above four ingredients into powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take five pills with wine, three times daily. Avoid pork and cold water. If raw Wutou and Fuzi are used, take five pills the size of sesame seeds. (From Volume 16.)
Bixiao Fang's Yangpi Jiu treats hemiplegia due to Hongjiao and all types of wind, effectively relieving wind-induced spasticity of the hands and feet.
Take the bark of the white poplar tree from the southeast side, more than three chi above ground. Remove the rough outer bark without exposing it to wind. Cut finely. Fry until yellow-red, then stop. Place in a non-porous vessel and soak in wine according to the amount of bark. Ensure the wine covers the bark by two to three cun. Seal with mud. In winter, open after twenty-seven days; in spring and summer, after seven days. Drink twice during the day and once at night, according to tolerance, stopping when alcoholic sensation is felt. Ideally, drink up to one dan. For severe cases, up to two dan, until cured. The wine must not be ash-infused. Do not use bark from gravesides. Expect loose stools resembling duck droppings one to two times daily after consumption. (Su Gong and Wen Zhong's Beiji Fang, from Volume 3.)
Su Gong's prescription for various Qi stagnation.
Xingren (120 pieces) Dazao (60 pieces, peeled and pitted) Xiangchi (300 grains, fried dry)
Crush Xiangchi first, then Xingren, then Dazao, until very fine. Form into pills the size of bullet shots. Hold in the mouth and swallow slowly. Follow general dietary restrictions. Though few in ingredients, this prescription is highly effective.
Furthermore, treating Hongjiao requires internal medication to attack the pathogen and external applications such as massage with ointments, fire moxibustion, etc., which are essential. For spasms and areas of anesthesia:
Yege (2 liang) She Xian (2 liang) Xijiao (2 liang, shaved) Wutou (2 liang) Jiegeng (2 liang) Yinyu (2 liang) Fangfeng (3 liang) Shujiao (2 liang) Ganjiang (2 liang) Badou (30 kernels, or another method says 2 liang, husked) Shengma (2 liang) Xixin (2 liang) Xionghuang (0.5 liang) Biejia (1 liang, honey-fried)

Another prescription for wind-bi, painful weakness of hands and feet, scrofula, malignant sores, and abdominal colic, curing hundred diseases via massage.
Mangcao (3 fen) Mudanpi (2 liang) Shujiao (4 fen) Lilu (3 fen) Yuanhua (2 liang) Dahuang (4 fen) Zaojia (2 fen) Fuzi (3 liang)
Grind the above eight ingredients into powder. Soak in 3 sheng of vinegar overnight. Boil in 3 jin of clean lard over low heat, lifting and lowering three times, until the color turns yellow. Strain the residue. Apply to swellings and sores. Toxic; do not ingest. Avoid contact with orifices and vital areas. During preparation, ensure women, mourners, chickens, and dogs do not see it. The second ointment therapy...
Is better.
Another Yege Ointment contains Badou; excessive massage damages skin and flesh. Use Mangcao Ointment instead.
Mangcao (5 liang) Fuzi (8 liang, raw, peeled) Danshen (4 liang) Han Fangji (3 liang) Xiong (4 liang) Jiao (3 liang) Wuzhuyu (4 liang)
Jiao (2 liang, shaved) Danggui (3 liang) Shanglu (not fully visible)
Cut the above fifteen ingredients. Soak in vinegar overnight. Boil in 3 jin of good butter, lifting and lowering nine times. Strain through cloth. Excellent for stubborn bi and swelling. Does not damage skin even if absorbed. Compatible with other medications. Highly effective. Avoid pork and cold water.
Another Yege Ointment Formula.
Yege (2 liang) Xijiao (2 liang, shaved) Han Fangji (2 liang) Mangcao (2 liang) Wutou (5 liang, raw) Wuzhuyu (5 liang) Jiao (3 liang, raw) Danshen (3 liang) Zhi Zhu Hua (1 sheng) Shengma (3 liang) Ganjiang (2 liang) Fuzi (5 liang) Baizhi (1 sheng) Danggui (3 liang) Jiegeng (3 liang)
Cut the above fifteen ingredients. Soak in vinegar. Boil in 7 sheng of lard, lifting and lowering five times. Strain. Using butter instead of lard is better. Avoid pork and cold water. Old formulas lacked Baizhi, Fangji, Zhuyu, Fuzi, Danggui, but included Badou, Xionghuang, She Xian, Fangfeng, Biejia.
Another Shenming Gao Formula.
Fuzi (14 large or 30 small, processed) Wuzhuyu (1 sheng, raw) Shujiao (1.5 sheng) Baizhi (1 sheng) Qianhu (cut 1 sheng) Xiong (cut 1 sheng) Baizhu (cut 1 sheng) Guixin (3 liang) Danggui (3 liang) Han Fangji (cut 1 sheng) Wind excess remove...
Cut the above eleven ingredients. Soak in vinegar overnight. Boil in 5 sheng of lard, lifting and lowering five times. Strain. Massage swellings and anesthetic areas. Highly effective. Beef butter is superior to lard. Avoid pork, cold water, raw green onions, raw vegetables, peaches, plums, etc.
Additionally, Hongjiao wind-toxin attacks suddenly without warning; attacking the heart leads to death. If living in remote areas without medicine, sudden death may occur. Essential medicines should always be carried.
Banxia (washed) Qingmuxiang Wuzhuyu Mugua Xijiao (shaved) Dahuang Shengjiang Jupi (must keep ready) Binglang Fuling Kunbu Bibai Zisu Xingren Qianhu Xixin Guixin Xuanjinhua (also secondary)
Must prepare for emergency life-saving. If suddenly ill without medicine, boil three to five ingredients strongly based on symptoms, then follow the prescription.
Furthermore, entering August, Qi stabilizes. For those not experiencing strong emotional fluctuations, prepare Banxia Duhuo Tang. Excessive salivation or palpitations/胸闷 upon waking are due to wind-heat. Zhu Ye Tang taken after meals is best. If ineffective, take the following decoction.
Maimendong (3 liang, heart removed) Fuling (2 liang) Shigao (4 liang, crushed) Xiaomai (5 he) Zhu Ye (cut 1 sheng) Shengjiang (2 liang)
Cut the above six ingredients. Boil in 5 sheng of water until 1.2 sheng remain. Divide into two doses after meals, spaced seven to eight li apart. Avoid vinegar products.
Another formula for common Qi fullness, taken every two to three days.
Binglang (7 pieces, crushed) Jupi (1 liang) Houpo (2 liang, honey-fried) Shengjiang (4 liang) Wuzhuyu (2 liang)
Cut the above five ingredients. Boil in 2 sheng of water until 1.2 sheng remain. Divide into three doses, spaced five to six li apart. Re-administer. This medicine is warm and dispels cold Qi.
Another Cang'er Jiu treats heat in skin, joints, head, and feet. Wind medicines are cold and inconvenient for heat conditions.
Harvest after June, sun-dry. By September, chop into a large hu. Add 3 hu of water, boil down to 4 dou. Soak 2 dou of qu three times. Total with 1 hu of rice.
After recovery

Almond powder added to the first rice meal. Raw Shengdi mashed into paste, added to the second rice meal. Tianmendong steamed, peeled, mashed into paste, added to the third rice meal. Large Damazi (1 dou) crushed, added to the fourth. Greatly removes skin wind, strongly tonifies deficiency. For headache, add Ganjuhua (1 sheng) soaked in the fifth lees. Stir well until wine is ripe. Suitable for all ages. No other taboos. Avoid toxic fish and meat. Identify medicinal places; if none, use Cang'er as base. Missing three or two ingredients is acceptable. Brew annually and consume in March. Effectively repels many diseases, extends life, lightens the body. Adding Shibei etc. drugs during soaking is excellent. Avoid carp and Wuyi.
Another single brew of Niubanggen Jiu, combined with Cang'er single wine method, greatly removes wind pain and itching, stops cough, eliminates damp accumulation, heals ulcers. It is also a good medicine.
