Xie Daoren stated: According to the theory of Five Elements (Wu Xing, Five Phases), the Liver is the root of the eyes; this statement refers only to the similarity within the same system and lacks substantial empirical evidence. In reality, the Zang-Fu organs (Viscera and Bowels) are all interconnected. Those who consume various foods or undergo acupuncture and moxibustion therapies should not habitually use this prescription.
Xie Daoren's prescription for treating sudden onset of eye swelling, redness, and unbearable pain is as follows:
Cassiae Semen (Juemingzi, 决明子, 1 sheng), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏, 4 liang, crushed), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻, 4 liang, sliced), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi Ren, 栀子仁, 1 sheng), Kochiae Semen (Difuzi, 地肤子), Leonuri Fructus (Chongweizi, 茺蔚子, each 1 fen), Bitter Bamboo Leaves (Kuzhuye, 苦竹叶, 2 sheng, sliced), Dried Isatis Leaf (Ganlanye, 干蓝叶, 1 sheng, sliced), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 芒硝, 2 liang), Plantaginis Herba Juice (Cheqiancao Zhi, 车前草汁, 1 sheng 2 he), Benincasa Semen (Dongguazi, 冬瓜子, 3 sheng, powdered).
Take the above eleven ingredients, boil the bitter bamboo leaves in two dou of water until reduced to seven sheng two he, remove the dregs, add the remaining herbs, and decoct until four sheng remain. Divide into four doses. The interval between doses should be approximately equivalent to the time it takes to eat two meals. Two additional doses are recommended as a standard course. For children, reduce the dosage according to their condition.
Another prescription for sudden eye swelling and pain:
Bitter Bamboo Leaves (Kuzhuye, 苦竹叶, 1 sheng), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡, 2 liang), Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba (Shejie, 蛇衔, 2 liang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), White Natrii Sulfas (Baimangxiao, 白芒硝), Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛, each 1 liang).
Cut the above six ingredients, decoct in three sheng of water until one sheng remains, remove the dregs, and take warm. Avoid pork.
Another prescription:
Fraxini Cortex (Qinpi, 秦皮), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连, each 1 liang), Bitter Bamboo Leaves (Kuzhuye, 苦竹叶, 1 sheng).
Cut the above three ingredients, decoct in five sheng of water until eight he remain, and use the liquid to wash the eyes. This prescription is similar to the previous one. If the eyes suddenly swell, become painful, or lose vision, decocting Qinpi for washing is the primary treatment. Avoid pork.
Another prescription:
Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛), Prunus mume Kernel (Ruiheren, 蕤核仁), Lu Salt (Luyan, 卢盐, each 1 liang), Cassiae Semen (Juemingzi, 决明子, 2 liang).
Cut the above four ingredients, decoct with juice from Lycii Cortex (Diguzhi, 地骨汁) until one and a half sheng remain, remove the dregs, then add one and a half sheng of honey and simmer until one and a half sheng remain. Use as in the previous prescription.
Another prescription for epidemic sudden eye swelling, itching, and pain caused by pathogenic factors:
Lycii Cortex (Digupi, 地骨皮, 3 jin, cut).
Decoct the single ingredient in three dou of water until three sheng remain, strain to remove dregs, add two liang of salt, simmer until one sheng remains, and apply to the eyes. One may also add one liang of dried ginger.
Another prescription:
Peucedani Radix (Qianhu, 前胡, 3 liang), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, 芍药), Celosiae Semen (Qingxiangzi, 青葙子), Cassiae Semen (Juemingzi, 决明子), Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛, each 2 liang), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi, 车前子, 5 he), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子), Light Bamboo Leaves (Danzhuye, 淡竹叶, 1 sheng, cut).
Cut the above nine ingredients, decoct in nine sheng of water until three sheng remain, divide into three warm doses. Avoid raw vegetables.
Another prescription:
Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏, 1 sheng, washed), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Shengjiang, 生姜, 8 liang), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu, 前胡, 4 liang), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi, 枳实, 2 liang, roasted), Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛, 1 liang), Prunus mume (Wumei, 乌梅, 12 pieces, split).
Cut the above six ingredients, decoct in seven sheng of water until two and a half sheng remain, divide into three warm doses. Avoid mutton, maltose, and raw vegetables.
Another prescription:
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草, 1 liang, roasted), Panicum miliaceum (Sumi, 粟米, 3 he), Bamboo Shavings (Ganzhuru, 甘竹茹, size of a chicken egg), Phragmitis Rhizoma (Lugen, 芦根, 5 liang).
Cut the above four ingredients, decoct in eight sheng of water until two sheng seven he remain, divide into three doses. Avoid seaweed and Chinese cabbage.
Da Huang Decoction for treating bilateral eye pain:
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄, 4 liang), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, 5 liang), Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草, roasted, each 4 liang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩, 2 liang).
Cut the above five ingredients, decoct in seven sheng of water until two and a half sheng remain, divide into three warm doses. This is highly effective.
Another prescription:
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄, 8 liang, cut).
Soak the single ingredient in five sheng of water overnight. Strain the juice the next morning and divide into three doses. Severe cases are often due to excess heat in the Spleen. Avoid greasy, cold, raw foods, sexual activity, garlic, vegetables, wine, and wheat products.
