The etiology of deficiency consumption (Xu Lao) lies in the insufficiency of Zang-Fu Qi, compounded by invasion from Wind pathogenic factors. When pathogens and righteous Qi interfere with each other, and Cold and Heat strike and contend, it results in pain in both the heart and abdomen. (From Volume III)
"Gujin Luyan" prescribes Shaoyao Decoction for treating deficiency consumption manifesting as abdominal pain, nocturnal emission, soreness and pain in the four limbs, vexatious heat in the hands and feet, dry throat, and dry mouth, as well as lower abdominal pain in women.
Shaoyao (Caulis Paeoniae Alba) (6 liang), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) (3 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (3 liang, honey-fried), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (4 liang), Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) (12 pieces, split), Yitang (Malt Sugar) (1 jin).
Cut the above six ingredients. Boil in 9 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng of decoction. Remove the dregs. Add the sugar. Divide into doses of 7 ge. Take three times daily and once at night. Avoid eating Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis), and raw Cong (Allium fistulosum). (This is originally Zhang Zhongjing's Xiaojianzhong Tang formula; the original text states Gancao 2 liang and Shengjiang 3 liang).
There is also Jianzhong Huang Decoction, a formula for treating deficiency consumption characterized by shortness of breath, urgency and pain in the lower abdomen, and insufficiency of the Five Zang organs.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali) (3 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (3 liang, honey-fried), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) (3 liang), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (1 jin, thinly sliced), Yitang (Malt Sugar) (0.5 jin), Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) (12 pieces, split).
Cut the above six ingredients. Boil in 1 dou of water to obtain 3 sheng of decoction. Remove the dregs. Add the sugar. Take 1 sheng warm. Three times daily. Avoid eating Haizao, Songcai, and raw Cong. (Both formulas are from Volume III).
The etiology involves individuals suffering from劳损 (labor damage/chronic fatigue); their bodies are weak and susceptible to Wind pathogens. The Wind pathogen takes advantage of the deficiency to lodge in half of the body, remaining in the skin and muscles without immediate manifestation. If one drinks water while this condition persists, the water has not yet dispersed...
"Gujin Luyan" prescribes Ganshengdi Wan (Rehmannia Pill) for cases where sexual intercourse occurs immediately after drinking water before the fluid has dispersed, leading to Pianku (hemiplegia/one-sided paralysis), insufficiency of one side of the body.
Ganshengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (5 fen), Ganqi (Resina Taxodi) (4 fen, processed), Bibo (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae) (3 fen), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) (2 fen), Jiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli) (1 fen, sweat-treated), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (2 fen, processed), Wutou (Radix Aconiti) (1 fen, processed).
Pound and sieve the above seven ingredients. Mix with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 3 pills per dose, gradually increasing to 5 pills. Swallow with wine. Three times daily. Stop when efficacy is achieved. Avoid eating Wuyi (Chloranthus spicatus), pork, and cold water. (From Volume XXIV).
