Xu Renze's Formulas for Treating Various Wind Diseases. This disease presents in various ways: some patients lose their voice and cannot speak, their spirit is恍惚 (confused/dazed) as if drunk, and both hands and feet are immobile; some can speak, their spirit is no different from usual, but the episodes occur at fixed times, during which they babble and shout loudly, remaining unaware of themselves after waking; some behave normally except that episodes occur at fixed times, during which they run wildly and scream; sometimes during each episode they make sounds like cattle, sheep, birds, or beasts, remaining unaware after waking; some behave normally except that episodes occur at fixed times, during which they experience dizziness, blurred vision, headache, and sudden vomiting due to chest oppression, calming down only after a long time; some behave normally except that episodes occur at fixed times, during which they develop fever, headache, and sweating, with physical weakness preventing self-support. Although these various wind diseases present with different symptoms, tracing their source reveals that all stem from neglecting health preservation, leading to a depletion of original Qi (vital energy) and specific damage. This may be caused by sexual activity, improper diet, excessive mental worry, or overexertion. If one pushes oneself to the extreme, how can one avoid decline? One should assess one's own condition and abandon excess desires, contemplate quietly, cease trivial matters, and simultaneously assist with medicinal herbs; there is a principle by which recovery is possible.
For wind disease caused by excessive alcohol consumption, resulting in inability to speak, immobility of limbs, and dullness/confusion of spirit, occurring one or two days after onset, it is appropriate to use Sheng Gegen Sanwei Tang (Raw Kudzu Root Three-Ingredient Decoction).
Sheng Gegen (Kudzu Radix, Puerariae Lobatae Radix): one piece, one chi long, three cun diameter.
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma): one he of juice.
Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, Bambusae Succus): two large sheng. If unavailable, use Zhu Gen (Bamboo Rhizome, Phyllostachys Viridis Rhizoma), one large sheng, chopped, boiled in one large dou of water according to the above method.
First, take fresh Sheng Gegen, wash and scrub it clean, pound it until extremely fine and loose, and squeeze out the juice completely. Pound again, then sprinkle Zhu Li upon it and squeeze vigorously to extract the juice. Take this juice before or after meals. If one feels rumbling noises and pain in the abdomen, take it warm after meals. After seven days of this regimen, take Fuzi Shiwei Tang (Aconite Ten-Ingredient Decoction).
Another formula for Fuzi Tang:
Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateralis Radix, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata): two pieces, weighing together one liang half qian, processed (Pao).
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma).
Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, Zingiberis Officinalis Rhizoma): each three liang.
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, Cinnamomi Ramulus Cortex): one liang.
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, Gypsum): six liang, crushed and wrapped in cotton.
Sheng Xijiao (Fresh Water Buffalo Horn, Bubali Cornu): shaved into flakes.
Digubai Pi (Phellodendri Cortex, Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex).
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma).
Duhuo (Angelica Pubescentis Radix, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix).
Xiongqiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma): each two liang.
Chop the above herbs, boil in eight sheng of water until reduced to two and a half sheng, remove the dregs, and divide into three warm doses. The interval between doses should be equivalent to the time it takes a person to walk ten li. After taking the decoction, if one feels the urge to sweat, cover slightly to induce sweating. After the sweating subsides, apply the herbal powder to the body. This decoction should be taken for five to six doses, with one dose taken every three to four days. After one dose, adjust the medication based on the progression or regression of the illness. Add one liang of Sheng Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, Ophiopogonis Japonici Radix), heart removed, if heat is excessive; add one liang of Guixin if cold is excessive; add two liang of Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix, Angelicae Sinensis Radix) if there is pain; add two liang of Renshen (Ginseng Radix, Ginseng Radix) if unable to eat; add seven Binglang (Areca Seed, Arecae Semen) with peel if stool is constipated. Avoid pork, raw scallions, peaches, plums, and sparrow meat.
Another formula for treating residual wind-heat when the number of days for taking decoctions is not yet complete, and pills are not suitable post-illness: Yiyiren Shi'erwei Yin (Coix Seed Twelve-Ingredient Drink).
Yiyiren (Coix Seed, Coicis Semen): one sheng.
Weirui (Polygonatum Odorati Rhizoma, Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma): five liang.
Sheng Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, Ophiopogonis Japonici Radix): two liang, heart removed.
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, Gypsum): eight liang, crushed and wrapped in cotton.
Xingren (Apricot Seed, Armeniacae Semen Amarum): six liang, tips and skins removed, double kernels removed, crushed.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix, Ginseng Radix): two liang.
Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, Bambusae Succus): one sheng.
Chop the above herbs, boil the first ten ingredients in one dou of water until reduced to three sheng, remove dregs, add Zhu Li and white honey, stir well, and drink slowly. Temperature does not matter. Take before or after meals. If heat is predominant, take cold before meals; if cold is predominant, take warm after meals. If taking pills, this drink is best for washing them down.
Another formula for residual wind-heat where frequent decoction intake has depleted strength and cannot attack the pathogen: Kushen Shi'erwei Wan (Sophora Flavescens Twelve-Ingredient Pill).
Kushen (Sophora Root, Sophorae Flavescentis Radix).
Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, Zingiberis Officinalis Rhizoma).
Xiongqiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma): each six liang.
Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, Scrophulariae Radix).
Danshen (Salvia Root, Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix).
Renshen (Ginseng Radix, Ginseng Radix).
Shashen (Glehniae Radix, Glehniae Radix).
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma): each five liang.
Digubai Pi (Phellodendri Cortex, Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex).
Duhuo (Angelica Pubescentis Radix, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix): each four liang.
Yiyiren (Coix Seed, Coicis Semen): two sheng.
Shushengma (Bupleuri Radix, Bupleuri Radix): two sheng.
Pound and sieve the above herbs, mix with honey to form pills. Wash down with Yiyiren Yin. Start with fifteen pills, twice daily, gradually increasing to thirty pills, size of wutong seeds. If stagnation occurs, remove Shashen and add Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix, Angelicae Sinensis Radix) six liang. If qi stagnation is felt, remove Xuanshen and add Ju pi (Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) four liang. If stool is constipated, add twenty Dabinglang (Large Areca Seeds, Arecae Semen). Avoid peaches, plums, raw scallions, raw vegetables, and Elaeagnus fruit (Wuyi).
From September onwards until before February, it is appropriate to use Wujia Pi Jiu (Eleutherococcus Bark Wine) infused with the following ingredients to take with the previous pills or drinks:
Wujia Pi (Eleutherococcus Bark, Eleutherococci Cortex).
Yiyiren (Coix Seed, Coicis Semen).
Dama Ren (Hemp Seed, Cannabis Fructus): fried, each five sheng.
Danshen (Salvia Root, Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix): five liang.
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma).
Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia Root, Rehmanniae Radix): each four jin.
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, Cinnamomi Ramulus Cortex): five liang.
Da Dou (Soybean, Glycines Soja): one dou, fried.
Chop the above herbs, place in a silk bag, soak in six dou of clear wine without ash residue for six to seven days. Take the previous pills slowly. Start with one or two he, gradually increasing to five or six he with subsequent doses; reaching one sheng is also good. Avoid raw scallions and Wuyi.
Another formula for preventing acute jaundice and thief-wind from heat diseases: Gan Ge San (Kudzu Powder).
Gan Ge (Dried Kudzu Root, Puerariae Lobatae Radix).
Gan Dihuang (Dried Rehmannia Root, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata): each three jin.
Xin Xiangchi Xin (Heart of Fresh Fermented Soybean, Fabae Fermentatum Black): one sheng.
Dry the above three ingredients in the sun, pound and sieve into powder. Take one fang cun bi (square-inch scoop) after each meal, twice daily, gradually increasing to three scoops. Wash down with cow milk, honey water, bamboo sap porridge, or plum juice as desired.
Following the administration of the previous Gan Ge San, although heat sensation recedes slightly, heat is not immediately eliminated. It is appropriate to use Huanglian Bazheng San (Coptis Eight-Ingredient Powder):
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, Coptidis Rhizoma).
Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, Scutellariae Radix).
Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, Zingiberis Officinalis Rhizoma).
Shushengma (Bupleuri Radix, Bupleuri Radix).
Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Anemarrhenae Asphodeloidis Rhizoma).
Gan Dihuang (Dried Rehmannia Root, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata): each one jin.
Zhizi Ren (Gardenia Seed, Gardeniae Fructus).
Daqing (Isatis Leaf, Isatidis Folium): each half jin.
Pound and sieve the above herbs into powder. Take one fang cun bi after meals, washed down with water, twice daily, gradually increasing to two scoops. If one can eat and drink appropriately regarding temperature, and men and women regulate labor and rest... (Volume Middle)
