[Pathogenesis] The collateral vessels of the Spleen connect with the Stomach, run alongside the pharynx, attach to the root of the tongue, and spread under the tongue. The divergent vessel of the Heart attaches to the root of the tongue. Now that both the Heart and Spleen viscera are invaded by Wind pathogen, stiffness of the tongue and inability to speak occur. (From Volume 1)
Jiufang Formula: Treats Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke) causing body stiffness or flaccidity, deviation of the mouth and eyes, tongue stiffness with inability to speak, faintness and confusion, and mental restlessness. It is effective for various Wind diseases without causing deficiency. Decoction Recipe:
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (devoid of nodes), Podocarpi Radix (Fangji, 防己), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhi Gancao, 甘草) (roasted, each 1 liang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参) (each 6 fen), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Pao Fuzi, 附子) (one piece, prepared), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) (2 liang).
The above ten herbs are cut. Boil in 9 sheng of water. First boil Mahuang for three boils, skim off the foam, then add the remaining herbs and decoct. Obtain 2.5 sheng of liquid, filter dregs. Take on an empty stomach, divided into three doses. Space the doses by the distance one can travel in a short time (approx. "ten li"). If speech returns, take ten more courses; all Wind diseases will be cured. Avoid raw/cold foods, wind-induced fatigue, alcohol. (From Volume 6; Qianjin Fang includes Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎) and Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁), totaling twelve herbs.)
Gujin Luyan Formula: Treats sudden aphasia.
Take half he of human breast milk, mix with half sheng of fine wine, stir well, and divide into two doses. (Same as Zhouhou Fang and Fan Wang's Formula, from Volume 10)
[Pathogenesis] Inability to move the body and limbs due to Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke) results from constitutional deficiency, open cou-li (pores/skin texture), and invasion of Wind pathogen into the meridians of the Spleen and Stomach. The Foot-Taiyin Meridian is the meridian of the Spleen; the Spleen and Stomach are interior-exteriorly related. The Foot-Yangming Meridian is the meridian of the Stomach, known as the Sea of Water and Grain. The Spleen governs the muscles of the body and assists the Stomach in digesting and transporting the essence of Water and Grain to nourish the body and four limbs. When Spleen Qi is weak, muscles become deficient and vulnerable to Wind pathogen invasion. Consequently, it cannot transport Water and Grain essence for the Stomach, leading to lack of nourishment for the limbs and muscles. With Wind pathogen in the meridians, clashing with Yang meridians, Qi flow becomes sluggish, joints become lax, resulting in inability to control body and limbs. Pulse diagnosis: A slow Spleen pulse indicates Fengwei (Wind Atrophy) with limb paralysis. If Heart and Kidney pulses are simultaneously abnormal, speech difficulty, obstruction of the nine orifices, and limb immobility occur. An excessive Kidney pulse suggests death. For treatments involving decoctions, moxibustion/ironing therapy, acupuncture, and stone needles, refer to specific formulas. Nourishing and Daoyin (guiding and pulling) methods are attached below. Shengyang Fang Daoyin method states: Vigorously shake buttocks left and right, hold breath nine times. If buttock Qi does not circulate, continue until pain/fatigue/Wind-induced paralysis improves. Chronic cases may present with insensitivity to pain/itch while walking and strange postures. Another method: Lie supine, knees together, feet apart, generating heat in the waist. The bed must be flat and stable. Lie straight, loosen belts, use a pillow three cun high, perform Wo Gu (firm grip). Wo Gu means holding the thumb with the other four fingers of each hand, extending arms five cun away from the body, standing toes up, feet five cun apart. Calm the mind, regulate breath, do not think of other matters, focus intent on Qi. Slowly rinse the mouth (Shu Li Quan). Shu Li Quan means licking lips and teeth with the tongue, then swallowing saliva. Exhale slowly through the mouth, inhale through the nose into the throat. Perform gently and slowly, not abruptly. Wait for breath regulation. Guide and exhale Qi without audible sound. With each inhalation, mentally guide Qi from the toe tips. Maintain inhalation for five or six breaths; one exhalation counts as one Xi (breath cycle). Count to ten Xi, gradually increasing to one hundred or two hundred Xi to cure the disease. Avoid raw vegetables, fish, and fatty meat. Do not practice Qi regulation after full meals or during emotional extremes (anger, joy, worry, resentment). Best practiced in the quiet morning hours; can cure myriad diseases. (From Volume 1)
Qianjin Formula: Treats Heart Deficiency Cold, abnormal temperament, limb incoordination, and muffled voice. Etiology: Li Feng (Severe Wind) damaging the Heart. Baizhu Jiu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Radix Wine): Tonifies Heart Spirit and stabilizes Qi.
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) (sliced), Lycii Cortex (Digupi, 地骨根皮), Elaeagnus Fructus (Jingshi, 荆实) (each 3 sheng), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, 菊花).
Cut the above four herbs. Boil in 3 shi of water to obtain 1.5 shi. Filter dregs, clarify juice. Use this juice to ferment 2 shi of rice using standard yeast methods. Drink according to capacity, aiming for slight intoxication. Avoid peaches and plums. (From Volume 8)
Gujin Luyan Xiao Xuming Tang: Treats Zhongfeng entering the Zang organs, causing body stiffness/flaccidity, limb incoordination, and aphasia.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (devoid of nodes), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心) (each 3 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhi Gancao, 甘草) (roasted), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (each 2 liang, crushed, wrapped in cotton), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) (1 liang), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) (5 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Pao Fuzi, 附子) (2 pieces, prepared), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (30 pieces, peeled, pointed ends removed, double-kernelled).
Cut the above fourteen herbs. Boil in 1 dou of water to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. If no improvement, take 3-4 more courses. Alternative version uses 3 liang of Shigao. Avoid seaweed, Brassica chinensis (Songcai, 菘菜), raw green onions, peaches, plums, pork. (From Volume 4)
