Etiologically, the cause of hemiplegia (hemiplegia) induced by wind pathogen is as follows: The Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is weak, and Blood and Qi are deficient. Consequently, the body is invaded by Wind pathogen due to this deficiency. The Spleen and Stomach serve as the sea of water and grain; when the essence derived from water and grain is insufficient, the limbs lose nourishment, resulting in hemiplegia. Upon pulse diagnosis, if the Cun Kou (radial artery at the wrist) pulse is deep and fine, it is termed "Yin within Yang." The patient may suffer from sorrow and unhappiness, aversion to human voices, shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating, and inability to raise the affected arm. If the pulse is absent on one side only (unilateral absence), both hands will be non-functional; if the pulse is absent on both sides (bilateral absence), the condition is considered incurable. (From Volume I)
Shen Shi's formula for treating hemiplegia and aphasia caused by wind uses the Ten-Ingredient Du Huo Decoction.
Ingredients: Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Du Huo, 4 liang), Cortex Cinnamomi (Gui Xin, 5 liang), Radix Puerariae Lobatae Fresh (Sheng Ge Gen, 8 liang), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhi Gan Cao), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fang Feng), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui, each 2 liang), Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Sheng Jiang, 10 liang), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shao Yao), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Pao Fu Zi, 1 liang, processed), Rhizoma Pinelliae (Ban Xia, 1 sheng, washed).
Cut the above herbs. Boil with 1 dou of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses, taken three times a day. Highly effective. Avoid eating Algae (Hai Zao), Brassica vegetables (Song Cai), raw green onions, pork, mutton, and malt sugar. (From Volume IX)
Qian Jin Fang treats sudden onset of facial deviation and hemiplegia with limited movement using Bamboo Juice Decoction.
Ingredients: Bamboo Juice (Zhu Li, 3 sheng), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fang Feng), Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae (Fang Ji), Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Sheng Ma), Cortex Cinnamomi (Gui Xin), Radix Chuanxiong (Xiong), Cornu Saigae Tataricae (Ling Yang Jiao, powdered, each 2 liang), Herba Ephedrae (Ma Huang, 4 liang, nodes removed).
Cut the eight ingredients. Boil with 4 sheng of water combined with bamboo juice until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. Take one dose every three days. Can be used regularly. Avoid raw green onions. (Guang Ji Fang also collects this; Ji Yan Fang lacks Cornu Saigae Tataricae but is otherwise identical.)
Another formula treats hemiplegia, joint laxity, weakness and immobility of limbs, incontinence, and facial deviation caused by Heart deficiency and cold-wind, using Ginger and Aconite Decoction.
Ingredients: Rhizoma Zingiberis Siccatum (Gan Jiang), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Pao Fu Zi, each 8 liang), Herba Ephedrae (Ma Huang, nodes removed), Radix Chuanxiong (Xiong), Cortex Cinnamomi (Gui Xin, each 4 liang).
Cut the five ingredients. Boil with 9 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Take one dose every three days. Avoid pork, raw green onions, and cold water. (Cui Shi's formula is the same.)
Another formula for severe hemiplegia caused by wind.
Ingredients: Bombyx Batryticatus (Can Sha, 2 dan).
Steam the single ingredient thoroughly. Make three straight bags, each holding 7 dou. Apply one hot bag to the affected area. When it cools, remove it and replace with another bag. Follow this method repeatedly, changing frequently. (All from Volume VIII)
Gu Jin Lu Yan treats severe Bi syndrome (impediment syndrome) causing immobility of the whole body or half-body, one hand or arm, aphasia, numbness without sensation of pain or itch, using Xu Ming Decoction.
Ingredients: Herba Ephedrae (Ma Huang, 3 liang, nodes removed), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fang Feng, 2 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao, crushed, wrapped in cotton cloth), Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin), Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Gan Di Huang), Radix Chuanxiong (Xiong), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhi Gan Cao, each 1 liang), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xing Ren, 40 seeds, skin and tips removed, double-kernelled), Cortex Cinnamomi (Gui Xin, 2 liang).
Crush the ten ingredients. Boil with 1 dou of water until reduced to 4 sheng. Take 1 sheng per dose, twice daily. Sweating should occur, and Qi will descend and recover naturally. Carefully protect against wind and cold; avoid exposure to wind. This formula also treats rebellious Qi with cough and asthma, and severe swelling of the face and eyes. It is better if the patient can lie prone but not supine. Avoid Algae, Brassica vegetables, raw green onions, and Terminalia chebula (Wu Ti).
Another Du Huo Decoction treats hemiplegia and aphasia caused by wind.
Ingredients: Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Du Huo, 4 liang), Radix Puerariae Lobatae Fresh (Sheng Ge Gen, 0.5 jin), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shao Yao, 3 liang), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fang Feng, 2 liang), Rhizoma Pinelliae (Ban Xia, 1 jin, washed), Cortex Cinnamomi (Gui Xin, 5 liang), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Pao Fu Zi), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhi Gan Cao, each 2 liang), Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Sheng Jiang, 10 liang).
Cut the ten ingredients. Boil with 1.5 dou of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Take 1 sheng per dose, three times a day. Another version removes Ban Xia and uses Herba Ephedrae (Ma Huang, 3 liang, nodes removed). Avoid mutton, malt sugar, raw green onions, algae, Brassica vegetables, pork, and cold water.
Another Ba Feng Xu Ming Decoction treats hemiplegia, spasticity and stiffness of hands and feet preventing flexion and extension, cold body, dementia or intellectual impairment, rigidity with mutism, potential death or survival, incoherent speech, opisthotonos, desire or lack of desire for food, and difficulty in urination or defecation.
Ingredients: Herba Ephedrae (Ma Huang, 8 fen, nodes removed), Radix Ginseng (Ren Shen), Cortex Cinnamomi (Gui Xin), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui), Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Du Huo), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhi Gan Cao, each 3 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao, 6 fen, crushed, wrapped in cotton cloth), Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin), Rhizoma Zingiberis Siccatum (Gan Jiang, each 3 fen), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xing Ren, 40 seeds, skin and tips removed, double-kernelled).
Cut the ten ingredients. Boil with 9 sheng of well water (Jing Hua Shui) until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into two doses, taken twice a day. Cover to induce sweating. Once sweat appears, the disease resolves. Eat white millet porridge and avoid wind. If no sweat occurs, administer again. Recovery depends solely on sweating. Avoid raw green onions, algae, and Brassica vegetables.
Another Ba Feng Jiu Zhou Decoction treats men and women who neglect self-care in cold weather, undress in the wind, sweat, and sleep on cold damp ground, leading to hemiplegia, cold hands and feet, immobility, difficulty in bending and stretching, generalized numbness and Bi syndrome, flaccid limbs, manic-like state, and reduced appetite.
Ingredients: Herba Ephedrae (Ma Huang, 4 liang, nodes removed), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Zhi Gan Cao), Rhizoma Zingiberis Siccatum (Gan Jiang), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Pao Fu Zi), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fang Feng), Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Du Huo, each 3 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao, wrapped in cotton cloth), Poria (Fu Ling), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Bai Zhu), Radix Chuanxiong (Xiong), Radix Bupleuri (Chai Hu), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui), Radix Ginseng (Ren Shen, each 2 liang), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xing Ren, 40 seeds, skin and tips removed, double-kernelled), Radix Asari (Xi Xin, 2 liang).
Cut the fifteen ingredients. Soak in 1 dou of water and 5 sheng of clear wine for three nights. Boil until reduced to 4 sheng. Divide into three doses, consumed within one day. For emaciated patients... [Text fragment ends here]. (All from Volume IV)
