The etiology of this condition stems from constitutional deficiency and open interstices (pores), allowing wind pathogens to invade the sinews. In spring, contracting Bi syndrome results in Sinew Bi (Jin Bi), causing sinew flexion; when pathogens lodge in the joints, they cause sinew contraction; when pathogens lodge in the collaterals of the Foot-Taiyang meridian, it causes stiffness and tightness in the shoulder and back; the Foot-Jueyin meridian is the Liver meridian, which governs all sinews throughout the body and corresponds to Spring; if the meridians are deficient, it leads to inability to extend and flex smoothly.
It is also said: Hold the left knee with both hands close to the chest to alleviate heaviness and difficulty in flexion and extension.
It is also said: Sit in a squatting position with the right leg extended, hold the head of the left knee with both hands, straighten the waist, inhale through the nose, exerting effort to the limit for seven breath cycles, extend the right foot outward to eliminate difficulty in flexion and extension, pain upon bowing and rising, and numbness/pain in the shins.
It is also said: Stand upright with the body aligned vertically, push one hand upward as if pushing an object, press the other hand downward as if pressing on something, exert maximum force up and down, switching sides for twenty-eight repetitions (four sets of seven) to expel wind from both arms, relieve cold blood in both arms and internally, and resolve spasms in the sinews of both axillae.
It is also said: Sit in a squatting position with the left leg extended, hold the right knee with both hands, straighten the waist, inhale through the nose, exerting effort to the limit for seven breath cycles, extend the left foot outward to eliminate difficulty in flexion and extension, pain upon bowing and rising, and numbness/pain in the shins. (From Volume I)
*Qianjin Fang* treats Mouth Wind (Kou Feng) characterized by spasticity of hands and feet, pain in all joints, vexation, fever, mental confusion, aversion to cold lasting for days, and loss of appetite. Use Zhang Zhongjing's Sanhuang Tang (Three Yellows Decoction).
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (5 fen, remove nodes)
Angelicicae Dahuricae Radix (Duqiang, 独活) (4 fen)
Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛) (2 fen)
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (2 fen)
Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) (3 fen)
Cut the above five herbs. Boil in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng. Divide into two doses. The first dose induces slight sweating; the second dose induces profuse sweating. If there is heat in the heart, add Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 大黄) 2 fen; if there is abdominal fullness, add Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, 附子).
Also use Mazitang (Hemp Seed Decoction) to treat severe wind affecting the whole body, with spasticity and urgency in the four limbs, wind pathogenic factors moving in the skin, and bodily stiffness. This formula does not damage healthy qi even in those who are physically exhausted, and it also treats mental dullness.
Cannabis Fructus (Huomaren, 火麻仁) (3 sheng, cleaned and soaked in water overnight)
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) (2 liang)
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (2 liang, remove nodes)
Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) (2 liang)
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮) (2 liang)
Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心) (2 liang)
Bambusae Folium (Zhuye, 竹叶) (1 handful, washed)
Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (2 liang, crushed)
Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛) (2 liang)
Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白) (1 handful)
Sojae Semen Preparatum (Xiangchi, 香豉) (1 he)
Cut the above eleven herbs. First, boil 2.5 dou of water, cook the hemp seeds until extremely soft, strain out the dregs, and retain 9 sheng of liquid. Separately boil Ephedrae Herba for several boils, skim off the foam, add the remaining herbs, and boil to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses.
Also use Bailian Yiyi Tang (Ampelopsis Root and Coix Decoction) to treat wind-induced spasticity where flexion and extension are impossible.
Ampelopsis Radix (Bailian, 白蔹) (1 sheng)
Coicis Semen (Yiyiren, 薏苡仁) (1 sheng)
Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药) (1 sheng)
Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren, 酸枣仁) (1 sheng)
Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜) (1 sheng)
Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, 附子) (3 pieces, processed and broken)
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 sheng, honey-fried)
Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心) (1 sheng)
Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 牛膝) (1 sheng)
Take the above nine herbs. Soak in 2 dou of pure wine overnight, simmer over low heat for three boils. Take 1 sheng per dose, three times daily. One may walk while holding a cane after taking the medicine. If unable to tolerate alcohol, take 5 he. Avoid raw green onions, pork, and Sargassum. (*Gujin Luyan* is identical; *Yifang* includes Plantaginis Semen, all from Volume VIII).
Cui Shi treats sudden onset of wind where the four limbs are contracted, shriveled, and thin, making movement impossible. Use steamed soybeans. For poor people who cannot afford medicines, follow this prescription.
Take 3 sheng of soybeans, clean and wash them, drain and steam. When steam rises from the steamer, pour 2 large sheng of vinegar into the steamer, mix thoroughly. Place the steamer on the ground in a sealed room. Consume gradually as it cools, twice daily.
*Gujin Luyan* Xizhou Xuming Tang (West Capital Continuation Life Decoction) treats stroke entering the zang organs, as well as spasticity and paralysis of the four limbs, and fluctuating wind syndromes.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (3 liang, remove nodes)
Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (2 liang)
Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎) (1 liang)
Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) (3 liang)
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (1 liang)
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 liang, honey-fried)
Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药) (1 liang)

Cut the above twelve herbs. Boil in 9 sheng of water, first boil Ephedrae Herba and skim off the foam, then add the other herbs and boil to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into four doses. The initial dose induces sweating; sprinkle rice flour inside clothing. Avoid Sargassum, Chinese cabbage, and raw green onions. (From Volume IV)
