*Short Treatise* states: Whenever one takes Wushi San (Five Minerals Powder) or mineral drugs such as Zhongru Shi (Gossan), after the condition has subsided, the triggers for recurrence are numerous. Although the symptoms of onset vary, the nursing principles are similar. In recent times, those encountering these syndromes have exclusively adhered to specific treatments. If one rigidly follows ancient methods, it may contradict the patient's constitution; if one relies on mediocre physicians, one may miss the appropriate timing. Both approaches lead to self-harm and unjustly blame the minerals. Upon deep reflection, this is not suitable. Consulting ancient medical texts reveals conflicting views. Merely stating "bathing" fails to explore the subtle mechanisms. The appropriateness of cold and warmth must be judged by oneself according to changing circumstances. Therefore, Tao Hongjing said: "In the past, someone took Hanshi San (Cold Food Powder). Following ancient methods, they poured cold water over their body two hundred times, resulting in immediate rigidity and death. Another person sought to induce sweating by placing fires in the four corners of a narrow room, dying shortly after." Based on this, how could regulation not be determined by human action? Clinging to past events and old methods is excessive. Now, I list these chapters, hoping you will select the beneficial ones for use.
Those who take Hanshi medicine with proper regulation will resolve the drug effects within a month, or twenty days. They can tolerate warmth but not cold; this indicates the drug effects have resolved. Those who lose regulation may experience splitting headaches due to consuming warm foods after taking the drug, leading to accumulation (Pi). Immediate purgation is required. If hands and feet suddenly develop stubborn accumulations due to prolonged heat exposure, immediately wash with cold water, drink hot clear wine, and consume cold food to stop it. Alternatively, drinking cold clear wine also stops it.
If sores appear on the body with Qi stagnation, swelling, pain, and immobility, it is due to excessive labor. One should take Xiangchi Yin (Fermented Soybean Drink).
Xiangchi (3 Sheng) Congbai (Green Onion White, one handful)
Boil the above two ingredients in 3 Sheng of water for three boils. Take orally. If symptoms persist, up to three or four doses will naturally stop them. If lower back pain feels like breaking and eyes feel like protruding, it is due to heat rushing to the Liver and Diaphragm while the waist and Kidneys are extremely cold. One should take Huanglian Yin (Coptis Decoction).
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 1 Liang each) Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 2 Liang)
Chop the above three ingredients, boil in 3 Sheng of water until 1 Sheng remains. Remove dregs, add Puxiao (Mirabilite, 1 Liang), and take in one dose. Stop when mild diarrhea occurs.
If dizzy and about to faint, it is due to thick clothing causing heat exposure. Wash and pour cold water over the head; recovery is swift. (*Qianjin Yifang* suggests washing the head).
If foot pain feels like breaking, it is due to sitting in warm places for long periods. Sleep on a single bed, engage in light labor, and wash with cold water to stop it.
If abdominal distension feels like bursting, it is due to long-term sitting in damp-heat, wearing warm clothes, and improper diet. Eat cold food frequently, wash with cold water, expose to wind to cool down, and recover quickly.
If heart pain feels like stabbing, it is due to skipping meals and bathing, causing cold and heat to clash, Qi stagnation, and blockage in the heart. Drink hot wine frequently in any amount until the Qi moves and meridians unblock. Then shower with cold water and apply cold compresses to the painful area, replacing with warm ones as needed. Recovery is swift. After resolution, quickly consume cold food; more is better. Among all pains, heart pain is the most urgent and requires immediate rescue. See the Heart Pain section in the lower volume.
If acute onset with whole-body heat like boiling water, Qi stagnation, unconsciousness, occasional collapse, locked jaw, and lack of awareness, the key to rescue is hot drinks to guide Qi downward.
If dysentery resembles cold invasion, it is caused by walking, eating, or drinking while exposed to heat. Quickly remove clothes, eat cold food, drink chilled beverages, and wash with cold water to recover.
If joints ache throughout the body, it is due to sleeping in warm conditions and covering with heavy blankets without removing them. Use a single bed, thin blanket, and single-layer clothing, or wash with cold water. Treat urgently.
If trembling and aversion to cold, or fever resembling Warm Malaria, occur due to irregular eating, enduring hunger, lack of bathing, and consumption of spoiled food, urgently eat full portions of cold food, wash with cold water, and walk several times to recover.
If there is an aversion to food smells resembling dead matter, it is due to warm foods causing accumulation. Urgently purge with Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction). If not purged, recovery is impossible. See the Pressure Release section in the lower volume.
If throat pain, nasal congestion, and clear runny nose occur, it is due to warm clothing near fire sources. Quickly remove clothes, seek coolness in the wind, and press cold stones against the throat and nose. Recovery will be spontaneous; washing is unnecessary.
If chest and hypochondriac fullness with upward Qi reversal and vomiting occur, it is due to hunger without eating, causing drug Qi to rush upward. Quickly wash with cold water and eat cold rice to stop it.
If food is vomited immediately upon ingestion with no peace, it is due to accumulation. Urgently purge with Gancao Yin (Licorice Decoction). Failure to purge may endanger life. Gancao Yin Method:
Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 2 Liang) Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, soaked separately, 3 Liang) Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 2 Liang)
Chop the above three ingredients, boil in 3 Sheng of water for two or three boils. Remove dregs and divide into doses. Stop when bowel movement becomes loose.
If difficult defecation and abdomen hard like a coiled snake occur, it is due to prolonged exposure to warmth causing dry feces retention. Consume Su Mi Gao (Butter and Honey Paste) 1-2 Sheng to moisten the intestines and promote evacuation. If ineffective, purge with Dahuang and Puxiao.
If strangury (Lin syndrome) occurs, it is due to long sitting in warm places, riding horses, or excessive heat entering the Bladder. Eat cold food, wash with cold water, and press cold stones on the abdomen. Recovery within one day. (*Qianjin Yifang*: If unresolved, purge; failure to purge may be fatal).
If chills and head tremors with loss of support occur, it is due to insufficient food, drug Qi overflowing into skin/muscles, Five Zang organs losing control, and Hundred Vessels shaking, clashing with Healthy Qi. Forcefully drink hot wine to harmonize vessels, force cold food to settle organs, force walking to regulate joints, and force bathing to unblock stagnation. Recovery ensues.
If urine is thick and frequent, it is due to eating hot foods and meats/biscuits. Wash abdomen with cold water and take Zhizi Tang (Gardenia Decoction).
Zhizi Ren (Gardenia Seed, 2 Liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Mangxiao (Mirabilite, added when decoction is ready) Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 2 Liang each)
Chop the above four ingredients, boil in 5 Sheng of water until 2 Sheng remain. Divide into two warm doses. Stop when purged.
If involuntary flatulence occurs, it is due to heat exposure without timely washing. Cold water washing resolves it.
If involuntary defecation with unawareness occurs, it is due to heat entering the Stomach and Large Intestine failing to retain. Cold washing resolves it.
If eye pain feels like stabbing, it is due to heat rushing to the Liver and eyes. Eat cold food frequently and wash with warm morning urine. Recovery within three days.
If tinnitus sounds like wind and discharge occurs, it is due to excessive labor and unregulated sexual activity, causing Qi to rush to the ears. Nourish with frequent meals and regulate sexual activity to recover.
If mouth ulcers, stiff dry tongue, and inability to taste occur, it is due to insufficient food, Grain Qi deficiency, and drug Qi accumulation in the Stomach tube. Urgently make Chi Tang (Bean Decoction).
Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean, 2 Sheng) Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 2 Liang each) Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, de-core) Xiao [Mai/Bean] (Wheat/Bean, 3 Liang each)
Chop the above five ingredients, boil in 6 Sheng of water until 2 Sheng remain. Divide into three warm doses. Single large dose is better. Repeat preparation as needed.
If joint stiffness preventing flexion/extension occurs, it is due to prolonged rest, lack of labor/excretion, stagnant drug Qi gradually invading sinews and blood. Engage in exertion to warm up, then wash with cold water to recover.
If Wind-Cold or Warm Malaria occurs due to heat exposure, treat with standard remedies without fault. Do not use hot medicines. These formulas clear heat and break accumulations, compatible with Hanshi San. For those taking Hanshi San who suffer relapse after heat resolution, first rescue with Hanshi methods.
If alcohol intoxication is unresolved, food cannot go down, alternating chills and fever, heating causes fever while washing causes chill, lasting days to months, insomnia, sorrow, anger, palpitations, confusion, and forgetfulness occur, it is due to prolonged heat exposure, irregular living, warm food accumulation, internal heat clashing with drug Qi. Rescue methods fail. Historically, Lu from Huanfu family suffered suicide attempts during attacks despite restraint. Forced feeding helped reduce heat. Even with home remedies, patients forgot them during attacks, becoming dull and unresponsive. Many died. Thus, I selected my brother Shi Yuan's emergency method: combine Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction) and purge. Recovery follows. Record the method... [Text fragment].
If removing clothes causes chill and wearing clothes causes heat, it is due to discomfort in dressing/undressing. Wear lightly if slightly cold, remove if slightly warm. Washing brings refreshing recovery. Do not endure; endurance leads to disease formation. *Short Treatise* says: Washing brings clear recovery; do not endure washing, or disease forms.
If gum swelling, lip ulceration, loose painful teeth, and trismus occur, it is due to sitting in heat. Rescue promptly: open mouth facing wind to let cold air enter throat, rinse with cold water to recover.
If pulse is surging and solid, or absent/weak resembling death pulse, or fine, rapid, and wiry, the causes vary. Physicians recognize these pulses: Heat excess causes wiry pulse; Accumulation causes surging/solid pulse; Acute pain causes absent pulse. Generally, Hanshi drug heat presents thus. Without suffering, it is not fatal. Diligent regulation is key. If stool is thick/frequent due to prolonged sitting and loss of regulation, it is a sign of impending death. Difficult to treat. Purge with previous Dahuang, Huangqin, Zhizi, Mangxiao decoction. Only 1 in 10 might survive. This is a desperate measure; failure to purge leads to death, causing regret.
If the patient is exhausted but pulse persists, it is because drug Qi dominates the vessels while True Qi is exhausted. Drug Qi still circulates, so pulse continues. This is not vital energy. After death, body remains warm like living muscle, borborygmus occurs, complexion unchanged, turning corpse-like after 1-2 nights.
If whole-body edema prevents turning, it is due to prolonged sitting, lack of alcohol/drug metabolism, drug Qi stagnating in skin, blocking blood vessels. Drink alcohol, wash with cold water, and labor to recover. If unable to walk, assist forced movement until joints relax. Avoid overexertion causing rebound heat; if heat returns, wash again.
If cold food cannot be digested due to prolonged cold intake and loss of taste, make Baijiu Mi (White Wine Porridge) with lots of butter, eat hot in 1-2 meals. If slightly stuffy, consume chilled beverages/food to recover.
If lower body odor and rotting occur due to hot bedding, sit in cold water to recover. If insomnia at night due to insufficient food and internal heat, take Zhizi Tang formula.
Zhizi Ren (Gardenia Seed, 14 pieces) Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, 3 Liang) Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 2 Liang)
Chop, boil in 5 Sheng water until 3 Sheng remain. Remove dregs, divide into 3 doses. Mild diarrhea followed by frequent meals ensures sleep.
If vomiting/regurgitation with bloody injury in throat occurs due to warm sleeping and hot food, drink cold water and press cold stones on throat to recover.
If drug effect causes lying quiet and refusing speech, it is due to excess heat and insufficient food, losing nature. Give hot wine, cold wash, cold food, and self-labor to recover. (*Qianjin Yifang*: Drug effect causes corpse-like lying/unconsciousness due to heat excess, insufficient food, evil clashing with healthy nature).
If limbs and face swell due to prolonged warm diet/lack of labor, separating drug Qi from Healthy Qi, give hot wine, cold food, self-labor, and bathing to recover. (*Qianjin Yifang*: Drug Qi merges with Healthy Qi).
If breath smells like hatching eggs due to warm clothing, or scrotal rot due to sitting in heat, enter cold water or undress/wash to recover spontaneously.
If sudden blindness occurs due to warm diet/living, undress, cold wash, and eat cold food for quick recovery.
If wandering muscle pain occurs due to heat exposure (not wind-cold), cold wash and cold stone pressing bring recovery.
If medication causes mental confusion due to warm drugs clashing with disease, induce vomiting. If vomiting fails, death ensues. If vomiting continues, eat cold food/drink to recover. If unconscious with locked jaw, cut teeth and灌 hot wine. Swallow and vomit repeatedly. Once wine Qi descends, recovery within half a day.
If lethargy/unawareness occurs due to prolonged sitting in heat/stuffiness, cold wash and cold food bring recovery.
If skin hard as stone, immobile, due to warm food/sleep accumulation, Five Zang blockage, and vessel obstruction, urgently purge with previous Sanhuang Tang. Eat cold food, drink hot wine, and labor to recover.
If arm/leg spasm/pain occurs due to prolonged warm sitting/sleeping, Qi entering Lung/Spleen/Stomach, frequently apply cloth towels soaked in cold water. Replace when warm. Recovery within three days. (*Qianjin Yifang*: Heat enters abdomen attaching to bone).
If abdominal/back heat lumps (size of nut/cup/dish) occur, press with cold stones locally.
If toe webbing sores occur due to warm shoes/socks, walk on cold ground and wash feet with cold water to recover.
Formula for oral heat/pain/restlessness:
Sheng Jizi (Raw Chicken Egg, 5 pieces)
Take all at once. Immediate cure.
