The etiology stems from wind-dampness toxic qi invading the Kidney Meridian. The Kidney governs water metabolism; now obstructed by pathogenic factors, the Kidney Qi fails to circulate and unblock water fluids, preventing them from descending to the Small Intestine. This causes water qi to stagnate and overflow into the Zang-Fu organs, infiltrating the skin, resulting in swelling and distension. (From Volume 13)
Wen Shen Tang (Warm the Kidney Decoction) from *Qian Jin Yi Fang* treats edema of the lower back, spine, knees, and feet accompanied by immobility.
Poria (Fu Ling), Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang), Alisma (Ze Xie) (each 2 liang); Cinnamon Twig (Gui Xin) (3 liang).
Cut the above four herbs. Boil in 6 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng. Divide into three doses. Avoid vinegar products and raw green onions. This formula also treats early-stage Hong Jiao Jiao (Podagra/Gouty Arthritis) starting from the foot and extending to the knee and shin, with bone pain.
One sheng of urine from a black ox per dose, taken twice daily. Discontinue when swelling subsides. For emaciated patients, mix two parts urine with one part cow's milk, boil until the milk coagulates, then consume.
Another prescription:
One fresh pig liver, finely chopped. Consume completely mixed with mild minced garlic. If not finished, divide into two meals. (Both from Volume 16)
