Place plenty of cool water in the room to absorb heat, so that the heart naturally feels cool and clear.
Place plenty of charcoal fire in the room to dispel cold, which is ideal for ensuring smooth and harmonious flow of Qi and Blood (气血).
Use an unspecified amount of *Hongzhi* (Vermilion Powder/Red Ochre), chew it in the mouth to extract juice, and frequently wipe the eye sockets; this prevents variola virus (smallpox) from entering the eyes. If spots have already appeared, take an unspecified amount of *Niubangzi* (Arctii Fructus, 牛蒡子), chew it thoroughly in the mother's mouth, and apply it to the infant's fontanelle (anterior fontanel); this is very effective. Additionally, mix *Baijiezi* (Sinapis Semen, 白芥子) powder with water and apply it to the soles of the feet to guide toxicity downward, preventing the rash from spreading upward.
Have the infant's biological mother prick a drop of blood from her middle finger and drip it into the infant's eyes; the smallpox toxin will be expelled. Alternatively, applying pig blood to the eyes prevents the formation of corneal opacity (nebula). Also, apply one drop of blood from a black dog's ear into the eyes to eliminate the smallpox. Apply blood from an eel's tail to the eyes to shift the toxin away. Grind ivory into water and drip it into the eyes to reduce the eruption. Place a dragonfly larva on the eyelid; as it moves around and secretes saliva, the smallpox will disperse spontaneously, with frequent efficacy. Wash the mouth and eyes externally with fine tea leaves. Apply gallbladder bile from a crucian carp (*Carassius auratus*) to the eyes, which is beneficial (gallbladder bile from silver carp is also acceptable). Drip water infused with *Yimucao* (Leonuri Herba, 益母草) into the eyes. Take a small amount of *Qingfen* (Calomel/Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite, 轻粉), grind it into powder, roll it into a paper strip, cut it open to expose the medicine, or inject it into a scallion tube and insert it into the ear: for left eye afflictions, place in the right ear; for right eye afflictions, place in the left ear. This treats corneal opacity following smallpox.
Steam human breast milk until warm and apply it to the eyes. Alternatively, use *Jinyinhua* (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 金银花), *Hongzhi*, and human breast milk; dip a rush pith (lighter's rush) into the mixture and apply to the eyes.
Mix rabbit feces with sesame oil and apply topically.
Pulverize *Yizicao* (Agrimoniae Herba or similar herb for eye nebula), and if the left eye hurts, stuff it into the right nostril; if the right eye hurts, stuff it into the left nostril.
Grind *Huandan* (Minii Oxidum, 黄丹) and old brick earth into fine powder and insufflate it. Alternatively, burn green cotton cloth to ash and insufflate it. Burn *Pengsha* (Borax, 硼砂) and *Tanxiang* (Santalum Album Lignum, 檀香) until charred. First, insufflate *Zaojiao* (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, 皂角) powder, then plug the nose with yellow beeswax.
Combine *Renzhongbai* (Urinae Hominis Depuratum, 人中白, calcined), *Pengsha* (Borax), and *Ercha* (Myrrhae Resina, 儿茶) into a powder and sprinkle it on the tongue. First, rinse with tea water, then grind *Jingmo* (China Ink, 京墨) in water, mix with powder, and apply. Rinse with salted tea water, then combine *Huangbai* (Phellodendri Cortex, 黄柏), *Huanglian* (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连), *Yuanshen* (Scrophulariae Radix, 元参), and *Kushen* (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, 苦参) into a powder, mix with honey, and apply. Alternatively, burn duck feces to ash, grind into powder, and apply using duck feathers.
Apply oily *Hongzhi* (Vermilion Powder) topically; this is most excellent. Alternatively, apply water-purified *Pengsha* (Borax) and *Bingpian* (Borneolum Syntheticum, 冰片) to the eyes.
